The Great School Holiday Debate!

I’m going totally off piste this week. The great school holiday debate is something that always raises its head at this time of year both here and in the UK. Most schools in the UK are now back in school with the majority taking six weeks holiday. Here in Mallorca the private schools have gone back this week and the Spanish schools go back next week. Most of the schools here have been off since the end of the third week of June which by the time they go back means some children of which my two are included have been off for just over 11 weeks!

So who is right and who is wrong here?

There have been reports in the UK that some people think in the UK the summer holidays are in fact too long. In a Sky News Data poll, when asked about the duration of the annual break, which goes on for about six weeks from July to September, 43% of people said it was time to reduce it. Just 11% thought it should be made even longer, while 39% said no change was necessary. In fact some areas are already trialling spreading school holidays more evenly throughout the year. Those in favour of change argue that such a “long time” off school sets pupils back but others argue that the six-week holiday remains “very beneficial” as a way for children to “reset” after the busy academic year.

If six weeks is now being perceived as too long in the UK then surely now the 11 weeks over here is ridiculous. Most schools would have you believe that it’s too hot for the kids to be in class as late as July. So why do they open their doors as summer schools? Well the answer lies in the fact that for most parents me included who work in tourism, June to September is one of the busiest times and therefore summer school is a must but must also be paid for. There is no doubt that most parents are at their wits end come the end of the holidays. It is a relief to both the parents and in most cases to the kids when they do go back to school.

Another crazy situation from the UK’s point of view is the crazy law of not being able to take your kids out of school in term time. Brought in by Michael Gove(remember him) the man that keeps backing the wrong horses. You end up with many children who will not have travelled abroad at all this summer because of the surge in flight prices that occur during peak holiday times. As a result many parents are now choosing to take their children out of school during term-time despite facing average fines of £60 per child per absence. This fine rises to £120 if not paid within 21 days.  However, in some cases families can be slapped with charges of up to £1,000 if they can’t give a reasonable excuse for their child missing school and can even be sentenced to prison time. Surely a parent can make up their mind whether it’s right to take their child out of a school on holiday? Yes on the advice of the teacher but if the child has a good attendance record and won’t fall behind then where is the harm? Visiting different countries, learning different cultures, trying different cuisines and learning different languages. The amount of people from the UK that tell me how lucky my kids are learning a different language and eating a Mediterranean diet then these kids are missing out.

Holidays in August can cost up to £1,310 more than the same trip in June, with some trips being up to 126% more expensive during the school holidays. With prices sky-rocketing during July and August, families from are tempted to move their holiday plans to during term-time, contributing to up to 10 days of unauthorised, missed school per year.

An average flight to Spain can cost £100 in the early summer months, however prices can jump to double this during August. This means for a family of four they can save around £400 by travelling outside of the peak times. With a fine being £60, this can often mean the flight saving outweighs the cost of the fine.  2013’s regulations put an end to parents being able to take children out of school without facing consequences, as fines were put in place to limit this from happening further. With the day after schools break up for summer holidays being the busiest day to fly of the whole year, the demand for flights pushes flight prices to heights that some families simply cannot afford.

Airlines are taking advantage of the seasonal constraints that families have in line with the school terms by marking certain popular holiday routes with a leisure profile resulting in higher fares and fluctuating prices for the times when families tend to book their holiday. With flights being prices according to who they think will be flying on each route, whether its families and leisure passengers or those flying for business. Airlines can use the monopoly that they have over families, to charge the highest possible price, leading to many families being priced out of travelling abroad in certain seasons.

Mind you this doesn’t just happen for those wanting to travel abroad though as those choosing a staycation will also suffer from increased prices. You try finding a cheap stay at say a Centre Parcs or Butlins during July and August.

Living here in Mallorca some might say why am I worrying about the UK? But I have my hat in both rings to be honest. Firstly my kids definitely benefit from time off school but 11 weeks, for me no. Far better for that to be spread evenly throughout the year. Putting my work hat on in Pirates and I imagine for a lot of businesses here it’s now become feast or famine. Since the new law come in we can be doing 10 shows in 6 days in August but only 5 in May. Before that yes you would still be very busy at the height of the summer but in the low season you could still be doing 7 or 8 shows as there would still be a lot of families that could come over the course of the summer. That just doesn’t happen any more. A change would benefit everyone, families would be able to choose when they travel, airlines and tour operators could price accordingly and islands such as ours could see a more sustainable tourist season.

Summing up I would scrap the 11 week holiday here and spread the weeks evenly throughout the year by including half term holidays. In the UK I would scrap the not being able to take children out of school term time and let the parents decide when its best to go away. And so ends my school rant, sorry to be serious this week. I’ll finish on an Irish butcher who is now a Guinness World Record holder after making the most sausages in a minute.

Dad-of-three Barry Crowe, from Cavan, smashed the previous record of 60 by putting together 78 sausages in just 60 seconds. There you go back to reality.

Real Mallorca were in action last night against Cadiz and after last weeks disappointing  1-0 defeat to Alcorcon they got back to winning ways. A last minute goal from Alex López gave them a much deserved 1-0 win. They also have a Copa Del Rey home game this coming Tuesday at 18.45 against Real Oviedo.

England play Spain this evening in the new Nations League and both my Sons have games too so it’s a busy one.

Whacky World Championships….

And breathe…September is here. I pointed out last week that this is my favourite month and after the madness of July and August it’s good to get a little bit of me time.

I’ve gone World Championship nuts this week and managed to find some of weird and wacky things that people compete in.

The World Air Guitar Championships took place last week in Finland. The winner was a lady called Nanami Nagura from Japan. Let’s just think about this these are people stood on a stage basically miming playing a guitar to a piece of music. If you had to choose an air guitar song what would it be? Mine would have to be Guns N’ Roses “Sweet Child of Mine.” Not that you’d see me air guitaring anywhere soon. Although come to think of it I’ve done air drumming which I’m sure I’m not alone in especially to “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins.

Wales’ smallest town, Llanwrtyd Wells, hosted the World Bog Snorkelling Championships at Waen Rhydd peat. 125 people braved the bog waters and tackled the two lengths of the 180ft peat bog in fancy dress last Sunday. Despite the heavy rain for most of the day, there were smiles all round as a new bog snorkelling world record was set.

Neil Rutter, 34, from Swindon, broke the previous record, set in 2014, by only four seconds in a time of 1 minute and 18.82 seconds.

Top spot in the ladies category went to Elinor MacCormac with a time of 1 minute and 48.46 seconds. They had entries from as far as the USA, Canada, Australia, Korea, Iran, Ireland, Belgium, Italy and the Czech Republic.

THE 11th annual World Gravy Wrestling Championships were held at the Rose ‘n Bowl pub in Stacksteads, Lancashire on last weeks Bank Holiday Monday.

All wrestlers are sponsored to take part in an effort to raise money for good causes. Dozens of contestants wrestled in gallons of gravy, raising much-needed funds for the East Lancashire Hospice and other nominated charities.

To win the contest, contestants must wrestle in 1,800 litres of gravy for two minutes, with points scored for fancy dress, comedy effect, entertainment and wrestling ability. The winners were Joel Hicks, a model and actor from Leicester wrestling as Mudman, and Roxy Afzal, a neonatal nurse from Manchester, who won the women’s event for the second year in a row. Not sure I would order the pub roast after that!

Upcoming World Championships include the World Porridge Making Championships which have taken place each year in the Scottish Highlands village of Carrbridge since 1996. The oaty cook-off draws competitors from across the globe to compete for the coveted Golden Spurtle trophy and title of “World Porridge Making Champion.” What is a spurtle I hear you ask, well to be honest I had to look it up too. The spurtle is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool, dating from the fifteenth century, that is used to stir porridge, soups, stews and broths and the winner gets a golden one! Not satisfied with just oats, water and salt? Don’t worry, competitors also battle it out for the speciality trophy in a section that celebrates the versatility of porridge with past winners including Sticky Toffee Porridge and Fruity Date Porridge. This years competition will take place on Saturday October 6th.

Also in October is the world conker championships who could be forced to import horse chestnuts from Germany because the heatwave has shrivelled the UK crop. Unusually hot and dry weather conditions threaten to throw this year’s competition into crisis, as conkers have grown too quickly and are smaller than usual. The annual event’s organizers held an emergency meeting last week to discuss the possibility of importing horse chestnuts from Germany if British ones are too small and shriveled to play with.

Around 5000 people usually attend the event every October, where over 300 people compete in the competition. Contestants are provided with conkers and are not allowed to bring their own or reuse them. This year’s event will be held at the Shuckburgh Arms in Southwick on Sunday, October 8.

Some fans of George Ezra’s “Shotgun” have just noticed something a bit odd in the background and now they’re saying it’s all they hear every time they listen to it. At 59 seconds, just as he’s about to start singing, there’s a very unusual noise in the song and many people believe it’s a burp. Now coming from a boy born in Hertford, Hertfordshire I had my doubts. Remember also he was the guy that was urging people to download the song “Three Lions” to knock him off of the number 1 spot. Which dually happened so I was delighted to see his song “Shotgun” go back and replace Drake at Number 1. So does this all round good egg actually burp on the song? Well I urge you to have a listen as when I played it to my Wife and two Sons they became burp converts too!

A good away win for Real Mallorca in Madrid last Monday against Rayo Majadahonda. That’s two wins from two and no goals conceded so far meaning they lie second behind Malaga in La Liga 123. However a disappointing 1-0 defeat last night away against Alcorcon mean they remain in second place before the other games over the weekend. They play at home next Friday against Cadiz and kick-off at the Son Moix is 21.00.

The Return of Space Ibiza?

This time next week it will be September. For those of us working through the summer we’re nearly over August and into what is my favourite month of the year. Less heat, slightly less work, less busy on the roads, easier to get a table at a restaurant and not long before the kids go back to school!

If you remember a few weeks ago I was talking about marketing and promotion and that Jet2 were getting flack from passengers for the amount of times they play the Jess Glynne song on their flights. It has really done its job to be honest as the first thing you think of when you hear the tune, whether you like it or not is Jet2.

Well Jess Glynne herself has come out and said “I’m gonna just say to Jet2 and to everybody out there, look. I didn’t make them do it like that, I agreed to, you know, let them have my song and, you know, I apologise if it annoys you,” she chuckled. Jess revealed she hadn’t actually flown with the company before but joked that she might surprise passengers soon.

“I haven’t been on a Jet2 flight you know. Why haven’t they invited me? Maybe I’ll just book a flight soon on Jet2… get the little mic thing and be like ‘right guys, I got a little treat for ya,'” the star joked.

She added: “Next time someone’s flying to Majorca, it’ll be me on the mic.”

I’m sure the marketing people at Jet2 will be working on that one!

Carl Cox did a sellout show in Son Fusteret in Palma last Sunday. One of the biggest attendances for a gig on the island this summer I hear. He’s also made the headlines this week after saying that he’d like to rebuild the nightclub Space in Ibiza. The club opened in 1989 and was known for its legendary terrace, Cox’s mind-blowing sets and 22 hour dance marathons on a Sunday. I remember the Kiddie Reps from one Tour operator who shall remain nameless who used to drop their guests at the Waterpark and then change in the toilets and spend the day in there! It sadly closed its doors for the final time in October 2016. He said “We have the idea of bringing Space back next year for maybe an opening and closing, but apart from that we are actually looking for a new area to build a new Space somewhere on the island.

“Yes, it’s going to happen – there’s no doubt about that! I’m going to bring it back in the near or the distant future. I mean, I’ve lost my home and I need to build a new one.

“Space was built as an independent club in Playa d’en Bossa. Playa d’en Bossa only became Playa d’en Bossa because of Space. The new Space doesn’t actually have to be on Playa d’en Bossa. Obviously we need some place where it’s a little bit quiet. There is no way I’m going to build a Space nightclub next to Ushuaia or anything.” It’s been met with a mixed reaction in Ibiza. I interview “Our Man in San An” Martin Makepeace every Tuesday on the radio and he says in the current political climate it’s unlikely to happen. The option of a new build is apparently a definite no-no so that leaves an existing building. So what are the options?

Privilege Ibiza originally known as Ku Club (1979–95) is the “world’s largest nightclub” according to the Guinness Book of Records, also defined as a Superclub with a capacity of 10,000 people. It is located in close proximity to the village of San Rafael, Ibiza, Spain less than one kilometre from the nightclub Amnesia.

Es Paradis in San Antonio first opened in August 1975 by Pepe Aguirre and artist Lluis Guell, who also created Café Del Mar. Like many of the top venues in Ibiza, Es Paradis was famous for its outdoor facilities. The island regulations of 1990 saw the club enclosed and the iconic pyramid roof was born. Its famous for its water parties where they actually flood the dance floor but would the San Antonio council who are well known for their stance against night time activities be happy with it on their manor?

Cox himself has ruled out using an existing venue as “putting Space in any of the other clubs wouldn’t feel right.” So if there’s no new build and no using an existing venue then maybe his quote of it being in “the distant future” be a lot more likely.

But as Martin said in our interview “stranger things have happened, there is no rule book in Ibiza!” And don’t forget there’s the small matter of elections next May which could change the current political stance.

Watch this Space! (I’ll get my coat)

On August 22nd 565 AD – The first ever sighting of the Loch Ness monster was recorded. Last Friday August 17th a photo taken by a 12-year-old girl on holiday with her parents has been branded the “best picture of the Loch Ness Monster for years”.

Charlotte Robinson was staying at Loch Ness Highland Lodges at Invermoriston when Nessie supposedly popped up about 50 feet away – on the first day of her trip.

The legendary creature is said to have surfaced for about a minute before reappearing about ten feet further away some seven minutes later – but for less than 60 seconds. Now am I missing something here as from 565 AD to the present day is a pretty long time. So are we to believe it’s the same one? And if it’s not how did another one appear? Answers on a postcard please to confused in Santa Ponsa.

I was very impressed with Real Mallorca last weekend after they beat Osasuna in their return to La Liga 123. The atmosphere was great with just under 10,000 in attendance and Mallorca battling their way to a 1-0 win. Hopefully a sign of things to come. They’re away at Rayo Majadahonda on Monday night who like Mallorca got promoted last year. They are also playing their home games at Atlético Madrid’s very impressive new Wanda Metropolitan Stadium. I visited the stadium earlier in the year to watch Arsenal play in the Europa League semi final and it was probably the best stadium atmospheres I’ve ever visited. It holds 67,703 which is quite a difference from their own Estadio Cerro del Espino, with a capacity of 3,376 seats. Not quite sure how many will be there but a great experience for the players.

My eldest Jacob started his pre-season football training this week. He’s kept himself pretty active since the end of the last season in June playing tennis, swimming and more recently boxing. He plays at San Francisco in Palma who are a feeder club for Real Mallorca. They’ll be playing matches all over the Island and it gives us a good opportunity to get out and about. Mind you his first friendly is in Manacor tomorrow morning and we need to be there at 9am. So much for a relaxing weekend off!

My youngest Jude will start his training the week after next and he has joined San Francisco this year. So my weeks from the beginning of September will be Monday Jake training, Tuesday Jude training, Weds Jake training, Thursday Jude training, Friday Jake training, Saturday Jude’s match and Sunday Jakes match. So Dads taxi will be open for business and to be honest I wouldn’t have it any other way!

What’s The Story Morning Glory…..

We visited friends on the East coast of the island last weekend. Both Sa Coma and Porto Cristo looked busy and it made a nice change to get away from the South of the island. I said I’d give a plug to Kenna’s Irish Bar in Sa Coma who looked after our breakfast needs whilst watching the other team from North London play. Ben from behind the bar said what are you doing here supporting them, you’re Arsenal! I forget sometimes the power of Radio as he listens to the Breakfast show and i think most people know I’m the red side of North London. We also visited a lovely restaurant called Quince in Porto Cristo which was regularly frequented by Caroline Flack during the filming of Love Island. It’s right on the marina which houses Rafa Nadal’s very impressive boat called Beethoven.

“Comedy” duo The Krankies have slammed the Government for “not letting them” take their pension. Currently appearing on BBC One’s Real Marigold Hotel, the pair had hoped to take one while still earning.

Wee Jimmy Krankie said: “What bothers me most is we have a good pension fund and we can’t take it because we are still always working!” This is a complete shock to me as I thought he was only 15!

They are so annoyed about the issue they are now considering retiring for good. Well there’s only one thing to say “Fan dabby dozy!”

Always a pleasure to chat with a music legend. Last Sunday at Pirates I met and chatted to Alan White who was the drummer with Oasis from 1995-2004. I’ve met him a few times before as he has a home here on the island. He was part of arguably their best album “What’s the Story Morning Glory” including “Wonderwall” “Roll With it” and he’s the drummer in the pool on the “Don’t look back in anger” video. Alan’s brother Steve is also a drummer who played with Paul Weller and the Style Council. In fact Steve was the youngest musician to play at Live Aid in 1985 when he was just 20. Back to Alan, in Oasis he was known by the phrase “Alan White – He’s alright”. White was also entrusted with the job of being Liam Gallagher’s ‘official’ drinking partner and was also said to be his best friend in the band. Together the pair were known as ‘Bert and Ernie’, named after the Sesame Street-characters. We had a good catch up and I had to ask whether they would ever get back together. He said he doubted it as while Liam wanted to, Noel just isn’t interested. He did say though that if it did ever happen the brothers individually have said that Alan would be on drums, Paul “Bonehead” Arthur’s on keyboards and guitar and Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan on bass. I for one would buy a ticket.

I have to say the UB40 concert in Port Adriano has to be one of the best concerts I’ve been to. Sometimes you forget how many hits a band like them has had. From “Food for Thought” to “Kingston Town” to “Cherry Oh Baby” and the iconic “Red Red Wine” they didn’t disappoint. It was good to bump into so many familiar faces that you don’t see in the summer as we’re all too busy. I’m lucky that I can walk down to the Port although the walk back up the hill is pretty tough. Personally I now prefer it to Puerto Portals and great to see it going from strength to strength.

Unfortunately the Retro Rewind concert featuring Tony Hadley planned for next Friday has had to be rescheduled into next year but it’s another one to look forward to.

Big day on Sunday if your fans of superstar DJ’s. British born Carl Cox is playing at Son Fusteret in Palma with a massive crowd expected. Likewise Frenchman David Guetta will be playing at BH Mallorca.

Real Mallorca play their first game back in the Spanish second division on Sunday kick-off at 19.00 against Osasuna. Nearly 10,000 season tickets have been sold so well done to the club for getting to that total let’s hope the team get off to a good start too!

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival and this year runs from August 3rd to August 27th. Every year thousands of performers take to hundreds of stages all over The City to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children’s shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.

August!

After commenting last week about the island being a littler quieter than usual in August. I ventured out on Saturday, firstly in the daytime to illetas beach which was not only packed but the parking was horrendous. Then in the evening I went to Magalluf where all the cafes and bars along the seafront were rammed along with the bars, shops and restaurants in the new Melia Hotel. Magaluf certainly looks a lot different now than it did a few years ago and hopefully the changes continue.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the heat, so I was interested to read this report. Having a hot meal in the evening can actually help you stay cool by the sweat you perspire evaporating into the air and cooling the body.

A chilli can also be helpful, with the capsaicin found in the food sending a signal to your brain that your body is overheated – so you will sweat more to cool down. The powerful anti-inflammatory effects of turmeric make a tikka masala curry a good option.

Watermelon, turmeric and reducing the carbohydrates and protein in your diet are also good ways to beat the heat.

Top 10 tips to help cool you down.

1. Eat spinach

2. Have a bowl of soup

3. Opt for dishes with chilli

4. Eat watermelon

5. Up your turmeric intake

6. Reduce your carbohydrates

7. Cut down on meat

8. Eat onions

9. Consume dishes and drinks which contain mint

10. Look out for dishes made with coconut milk

If you like me don’t have a clue about how internet broadband speeds work then this might pass you by but the Worldwide broadband speed League has been released.

Spain surprisingly ranked at number 16, 5 places up from last year. The UK is ranked a lowly 35th down 4 places from last year, putting it in the bottom third of EU countries and below the likes of Madagascar and Bulgaria.

Top 10 global broadband speeds in the World

  1. Singapore
  2. Sweden
  3. Denmark
  4. Norway
  5. Romania
  6. Belgium
  7. Netherlands
  8. Luxembourg

We talked last week about brands sticking in your memory because of a certain  track or piece of music that goes with the advert. What about brands that have made it into our everyday language and conversations? Things like “When was the last time you hoovered here?”, which is really when was the last time you vacuumed? “Why don’t you Google it?” There are other search engines too!

“Can I have a Bacardi & Coke please?” Why don’t we ask for a white rum and Pepsi? We asked for some others from our listeners who came up with, Kleenex, Marmite, Britvic Orange, Sellotape and Biro.

The other part of a good brand is its logo and Britain’s favourite logo is Coca-Cola’s, according to a poll. The iconic red and white symbol was first revealed in the late 1800s and has remained largely unchanged ever since.

It’s so popular the logo can commonly found on fashionable clothing items, homeware and other desirables – while vintage items featuring the logo can sell for thousands.

The top 10 logos were;

1. Coca-Cola

2. McDonald’s

3. Mickey Mouse (Disney)

4. Cadbury

5. Apple

6. Nike

7. Guinness

8. LEGO

9. Michelin

10. PG Tips

A great evening at Port Adriano on Thursday watching The Jackson’s. They’ve not lost their moves or stage presence and the video they did on the big screen showing how they became a Worldwide phenomenon was a great watch. Good to see the port and concert packed and I thought it was a bit cheeky of the people standing on the outside looking in, slow hand clapping as they started a little late!

Looking forward to UB40 on Tuesday night.

Love Island still continues to make the headlines. ITV 2’s best ever programme is going Stateside, as CBS have announced they’ve taken the format. Love Island Australia and Germany have been filmed here in Mallorca so will the Americans do the same? It certainly is great publicity for the island.

The league for Real Mallorca starts next Sunday with a home game against Osasuna, kick-off is at 19.00. Returning to Mallorca in an Osasuna shirt is former crowd favourite Brandon. Born in Santanyi to an English Father and Spanish Mother he is a product of the Mallorca youth system. It will be interesting to see the reception he gets.

Tourist Saturation?

Blimey it’s hot! Great news if you’re on holiday but if you’re working not so great. Its head down and get through August and look forward to the best month of the season, September.

Not quite sure about the “Tourist go home”, “Tourism is killing Mallorca” and “tourist saturation” campaigns. Whilst the protests aren’t really welcome I’m not quite sure they are actually a problem at the moment. Everybody I talk to tells me it’s one of the worst seasons for a long time. There’s lots of factors of course affecting this;

The hoteliers overpricing their beds.

The re-emergence of Turkey, Tunisia and Greece.

The World Cup.

The weather in the UK.

The Tourist Tax.

All things which have definitely affected the season.

The taxi strike on Tuesday probably didn’t help either as everybody arriving at the airport couldn’t get a cab. Not a great advert as you land and can’t get to your resort!

Just a thought why isn’t the Government promoting what they are spending the Tourist Tax money on? A video on that massive screen as you come through arrivals or pictures on the walls saying last year we raised….and this is what we have spent the money on. Keeping Mallorca the way we all love it for now and for future generations. Get Rafa Nadal to narrate the video as he’s a Worldwide name that everybody knows and loves. Shall I copyright that?

The best advertising campaigns are the ones that stick in your head and you associate a brand or a company with a particular song or piece of music but they are usually the ones that can become annoying too.

Airline Jet2 have responded after an increased number of complaints from passengers with regards to the repeated plays of ‘Hold My Hand’ by Jess Glynne on their flights.

The company have been using the hit single from her massive-selling 2015 album ‘I Cry When I Laugh’ extensively during recent advertising campaigns, and on their flights too.

A Jet2 spokesperson told NME: “Our ‘Hold My Hand’ concept is very popular with customers, and we receive a huge amount of positive feedback about both the advert and the song.”

You can see Jess Glynne on tour in the UK at the following venues;

Saturday August 4 – BEDFORD Bedford Park

Thursday November 15 – GLASGOW SSE Hydro

Saturday November 17 – MANCHESTER Arena

Sunday November 18 – BIRMINGHAM Genting Arena

Tuesday November 20 – LONDON O2

Wednesday November 21 – BRIGHTON Centre

Saturday November 24 – NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE Metro Radio Arena

Sunday November 25 – LEEDS first direct Arena

Tuesday November 27 – DUBLIN 3Arena

Thursday November 29 – CARDIFF Motorpoint Arena

Friday November 30 – NOTTINGHAM Motorpoint Arena

I interviewed Tony Hadley last week and it was a pleasure to speak to him. We talked about the Spandau days, the Jungle and his upcoming gig at Son Amar on Friday 24th. I know the guys here at the Bulletin will have a full interview for you next week.

There are lots of celebrities here on holiday and this past week at Pirates we’ve had from Loose Women, Coleen Nolan and from Saturday Night Takeaway and the 2016 Celebrity Jungle winner Scarlett Moffatt. Both lovely people who were happy to pose for photographs and chat backstage.

A couple of weeks ago we had the 2016 Love Island winners Cara and Nathan who announced last week in OK Magazine that they’re engaged to be married. A fitting time to do it seeing it was the final last Monday. Without doubt it’s ITV2’s most successful TV programme to date and as I’ve said before a great advert for the island. Let’s see if they return next year.

I mentioned last week the cost of the Real Mallorca season tickets and compared them to the Premier League. I’ve managed to find out that Mallorca have the 3rd cheapest price in the most expensive tickets at 255€. The most expensive is Malaga’s at 750€ and the least expensive is Albacete’s at 150€. Also in the cheapest tickets Mallorca rank 9th at 85€ with Rayo Majadahonda the cheapest at just 50€ and Numancia the most expensive at 285€.

The Football League starts this weekend, the Premier League next weekend and La Liga and La Liga 2 the weekend after.

My Wife is over the moon as you can imagine!

It’s Getting Hot in Here!

Another busy week with loads going on but it does worry me that my place of birth is struggling a little at the moment. They can apparently neither cope with the cold or the heat so what hope have they got with Brexit? Couldn’t organise a jolly up in a brewery, get my drift?

After a successful World Cup Vladimir Putin must be feeling pretty good right now. Did you notice how long it took though to do the trophy presentation? Putin does the have a reputation of keeping people waiting for a meeting or an event and I’ve compiled a list of who and how long he’s kept them below.

Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany: 4hrs 15mins

Viktor Tanukovych, President of Ukraine: 4hrs

Alyaksandr Lukashenka, President of Belarus: 3hrs

Tsakhia Elbegdorj, President of Mongolia: 2hrs

Shimon Peres, President of Israel: 1hr 30mins

Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India: 1hr

Pope Francis: 50mins

The Queen: 14mins

Apparently when he met up with Donald Trump the other week they were playing cat and mouse as to who could arrive last. Putin still managed to outdo him by 30 minutes!

I’m still trying to get over my World Cup Withdrawal Symptoms, so If you thought I was scraping the barrel last week with the Hot Dog eating World Championships, I think I’ve surpassed myself. The Bottle Inn in Dorset hosts the annual World Nettle Eating Championships. Competitors are served 2-foot long stalks of stinging nettles from which they pluck and eat the leaves. After an hour the bare stalks are measured and the winner is the competitor with the greatest accumulated length of nettles. The contest began in the late 1980s when two farmers argued over who had the longest stinging nettles in their field and evolved into the World Nettle Eating Championships when one of the farmers promised to eat any nettle which was longer than his. The championship has separate men’s and women’s sections and attracts competitors from as far afield as Canada and Australia. This years winner was Phil Thorne who chomped his way through 104ft of stinging nettes, to beat his personal best of 96ft. The women’s competition ended in a dead heat with both Mel Long and Rachel Woods managing to eat 62ft. Apparently there were lot dock leaves on hand for emergencies! I’ll look out for some more weird and wacky World Championships, just 13 sleeps to go to the start of the Premier League!

‘Now That’s What I Call Music 100’ is on course to become 2018’s biggest-selling album yet, with 105,000 copies sold in its first three days on sale.

The title is currently held by its predecessor, ‘Now 99’, which sold 115,000 in its opening week back in March, according to the Official Charts Company.

‘Now 100’ features the latest hits of the moment plus a selection of popular tracks from the last 35 years, since the first NOW was released in 1983 including Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa‘s ‘One Kiss’ and Post Malone‘s ‘Better Now’ along with UB40’s ‘Red Red Wine’, The Spice Girls’ breakthrough hit ‘Wannabe’, Cher’s ‘Believe’ and Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’.

Robbie Williams is the most featured artist on the popular ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ compilations.

The 100th edition of the series was released last Friday and features Williams’ massive hit ‘Angels’. He’s had a total of 30 tracks featured across the series – the first was ‘Old Before I Die’ from the LP ‘Life thru a Lens’ on 1997’s ‘NOW 37’.

Now unfortunately I’m old enough to remember the first one, which I think I bought as a double cassette(one for the teenagers).

The artists featured the most times are;

Robbie Williams 30 times

Rihanna 27 times

Calvin Harris 27 times

David Guetta 25 times

Kylie Minogue 24 times

Girls Aloud 21 times

Brazil is a country whose football players names roll off your tongue Pele, Jarzinho, Zico, Socrates and Ronaldinho to name but a few. However every now and then they come up with some very strange old school names such as Fred, Malcolm and now Liverpool’s World record new goalkeeper Alisson. The back page headline writers had a good day this week such as “Alisson Wonderland” You can be sure the Kop will come up with a great chant of his name.

I went to renew our season tickets this week for Real Mallorca. Now back in the La Liga 2 they’ll be some tasty games at the Son Moix this season, including Deportivo La Coruña, Malaga and Las Palmas. The fixtures for the new season were launched this week with Mallorca at home to Osasuna the weekend of the 18th and 19th of August.

If you’re renewing your tickets then the prices are;

Grada Sol Baja (uncovered stand) Adults: 125€ Children under 14 & OAP’s 75€

The ticket office opens from 09.30-14.00 and 16.00-19.30; Monday to Friday.

These are the cheapest Season Tickets you can buy for each of the Premier League teams this season.

5.      Newcastle £571.00

6.     Crystal Palace £570.00

7.      Southampton £570.00

8.     Watford £551.00

9.     Bournemouth £550.00

10.   Man Utd £532.00

11.   Brighton £515.00

12.   Wolves £509.00

13.   Everton £485.00

14.   Leicester £395.00

15.   Burnley £390.00

World Cup Withdrawal Syndrome….

So I am suffering from what is commonly known as World Cup withdrawal syndrome. I know there are many more of you out there like me who just don’t know what to do with ourselves! I asked the listeners on the radio this week if they had any cures and here’s what they offered.

“Go to the cinema and watch Mama Mia 2”

“Watch all the games on catch up”

“Walsall v Aston Villa friendly match”

“Get another hobby”

Not sure if they’re very helpful to be honest so I’m counting down to the start of the the Premier League, 20 sleeps to go!

Keeping on the football theme and as the Father of two football mad Sons I was alerted to price of Man Utd’s new soccer kit. If you want to buy the whole kit it will set you back a cool £182.85! That’s without having the name of your favourite player on the back. Now I know my boys aren’t Man Utd fans but you can be sure Arsenals won’t be cheaper. My youngest asked me if he could have an Arsenal shirt with either Aubameyang the striker or Leno the goalkeeper and as they charge by letter I’m going for the keeper!                                                                                                           This all might have something to do with the fact that Manchester United have climbed up to second in the rankings of most valuable sports franchises, according to Forbes. The Premier League giants are worth a staggering £3.16billion after recording a 12% growth from last year. Only American football’s Dallas Cowboys are worth more than the Old Trafford club at £3.67bn.                                                         Here is the top ten;

1. Dallas Cowboys, $4.8 billion (NFL)

2. Manchester United, $4.123 billion (football)

3. Real Madrid, $4.09 billion (football)

4. Barcelona, $4.064 billion (football)

5. New York Yankees, $4 billion (baseball)

6. New England Patriots, $3.7 billion (NFL)

7. New York Knicks, $3.6 billion (basketball)

8. Los Angeles Lakers, $3.3 billion (basketball)

8. New York Giants, $3.3 billion (NFL)

10. Golden State Warriors, $3.1 billion (basketball)

10. Washington Redskins, $3.1 billion (NFL)

Desperate to find some sport to watch I found the World Hot Dog eating Championships. Defending champion Joey “Jaws” Chestnut chomped down a record 74 franks and buns in 10 minutes to take home his 11th title at the annual Nathan’s Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest. The renowned competitive eater from San Jose, California, took home the coveted Mustard Belt and surpassed the previous mark of 72 dogs and buns, which he downed last year at the same contest. In the Ladies Championships, Miki Sudo downed 37 franks to win her fifth straight title in the women’s competition. I’m really scraping the barrel I know.                                        I loved reading this story this week. A New York-Presbyterian Hospital has released a CPR playlist on their website to help people maintain rhythm while performing CPR. In an effort to help train first responders in hands-only CPR, they released a 40-song playlist whose beats per minute match the number of chest compressions. Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees, the disco hit made popular by the movie Saturday Night Fever, has a rhythm of 103 beats per minute. This is close to the recommended rate of at least 100 chest compressions per 60 seconds that should be delivered during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Additionally, doctors say, the song is well known enough to be useful in teaching the general public to effectively perform the lifesaving technique.                                                                                                                The Top 5 were as follows;

1. Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees

2. Cecilia – Simon & Garfunkel

3. Hard To Handle – Black Crows

4. Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd

5. Rock Your Body – Justin Timberlake

Obviously there is a serious side to this and if it helps save lives then it’s worth it. Don’t forget it’s not too long to some of the best concerts to come to Mallorca. Down in Port Adriano on Thursday August 9th is The Jacksons. Formed by the original members, Jermaine Jackson, Tito Jackson, Jackie Jackson and Marlon Jackson, The Jacksons will present an amazing show that includes all their greatest hits produced with their brother, Michael Jackson. This concert is a unique opportunity to witness the remaking of one of the best pop and Motown super bands in the history of music.

The Jacksons are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and their singles and albums have been hits all over the World. Including ” ABC “, ” I Want You Back “,” I’ll Be There “,” Rockin ‘Robin “, ” Can You Feel it”, Blame it on the Boogie” and many more!

Tuesday August 14th in Port Adriano are UB40 featuring Ali, Astro & Mickey an iconic band from the 80’s with memorable songs such as “Red, Red Wine”, “Kingston Town”,  “Cherry Oh Baby” and “Food For Thought”. Not to be missed!

And finally as if that wasn’t enough on Friday 24th August there’s Retro Rewind, in the beautiful setting of Son Amar from 7pm, performing on the main terrace outside, will be Radio One Mallorca DJ ‘ s Des Mitchell & Rad Damon followed by former Capital FM DJ and star of ITV’s Fun House Pat Sharp!

Treat yourself at the food court and bars before the main event inside the theatre where Tony Hadley, former lead singer of Spandau Ballet, will be performing from 10pm. He will be singing some of the classic songs from Spandau Including “Gold”, “True”, “Through the Barricades”, “Communication” and some of his own tracks.

Tickets for all these concerts can be bought at http://www.radioonemallorca.com and don’t leave it to the last minute as there won’t be much left I’m sure.

With 156 sleeps to Christmas John Lewis have teamed up with Quality Street for an ingenious idea. You know when buy a tin like this there’s always some that you don’t like so they are doing a pick and mix of your own tin. You have to choose an minimum of 4 flavours from Fudge, Toffee Penny, Orange Creme, Coconut Eclair, Strawberry Delight, Toffee Finger, The Purple One, Toffee Deluxe, Green Triangle, Honeycomb Crunch, Caramel Swirl, Milk Choc Block. Not quite sure how they’re going to check that you’ve got at least 4 but it’s still a great idea. The tins will cost you £12.00 where a normal mixed tin will only cost £7.50 so it’s a clever marketing ploy. They’ll be available in selected UK stores from late September until December 23rd.

Personally I’m a Heroes Man myself but I may be tempted.

We’re going home!

It’s been a funny week, from the euphoria of beating Sweden last Saturday afternoon and believing it’s definitely coming home to our loss against Croatia on Wednesday evening and to the realisation that we’re actually going home. I’ve nothing but pride for our team as I pretty much wrote off our chances before the tournament but as every game went by my attitude began to change to a situation that I couldn’t see us losing. Coming into the game I thought we’d win but if we got to the final France would maybe have been a step too far. Unfortunately we didn’t get that far as Croatia proved stronger than us. It was thought that they may tire as they’d had 2 consecutive games of extra time and penalties but it was us who looked dead on our feet. Luka Modric said after the game that the British media had underestimated them but I loved the tweet from Gary Neville who said “Heard this over the years time and time again. My opinion is, A journalist, Pundit or Broadcaster never won or lost a football game in history! Modric is a great player . I’m not having he was thinking of the Daily Star front page at 1-0 down.”
I loved the idea of waistcoat Wednesday supporting Gareth and the boys. He has single-handedly helped revive Marks & Spencer as sales of waistcoats have increased by 35%. M&S who have been the official suit supplier to the England national team since 2007, have made replica versions of the suit available to fans at the price of £265, while Southgate’s popular waistcoat costs an additional £65.
I managed to dig out my 13 year old wedding waistcoat which did fit by the way, well unbuttoned but I still got it on! I didn’t watch the 3rd/4th place play-off match yesterday as I didn’t really see the point. Why don’t they just give both teams a bronze medal like they do the boxers at the Olympics. I’m sure all the players would prefer to be at home with their families, going on holiday and getting themselves ready as the Premier League starts in four weeks. Looking forward to the final though and at least we can have a relaxing Sunday watching what will hopefully be a great game of football. France the winners for me 3-1.
Now will Wimbledon clash with the World Cup Final? Well the answer is Yes, the men’s singles final is likely to overlap with the start of the World Cup final on Sunday. The BBC has confirmed that it will begin showing Wimbledon coverage on BBC1 from 1pm(UK time) However, at around 2.55pm(UK time) coverage will switch over to BBC2 for the remainder of the match while BBC1 screens the football showdown between France and Croatia. The World Cup final meanwhile will be live on ITV from 2.55pm(UK time)
Following our donations to our charities from our Radiothon, I received these messages of thanks.
G’day Rich, many, many, many thanks to you and your team, legends!
Brad Robertson
Founder & Owner Ondine
Wow! Thank you so much for supporting our work!
Alice Mason
Fundraising & Outreach Ondine
Hi Richie I know Brad and Alice have already sent a couple of messages, but I thought it might be nice to also let you know how this money will be spent – so you are fully secure in the knowledge it is 100% going to where it is needed the most.
Currently, our fundraised income is going to three big projects:
1) to keep our schools programme going for the next academic year (we have so far engaged with over 1000 students on this island this year alone)
(2) to carry out our Formentor expedition (urgently needed to gather the scientific data required to provide the government with the necessary information to select the optimal location for the next MPA on the island before they do it blindsided)
(3) to initiate our new exciting multimedia work that is aiming to bring the underwater world into the classroom and beyond through live, interactive experiences using of as of yet unseen footage of marine life in the Mediterranean.
So lots of work happening and lots of money needed to support it! Radio One’s contribution will be a huge step in the right direction in helping us achieve our goals.
We also need to say a public thank you – so Alice will make sure we get something up on our social media pages about it soon.
Thanks again to everyone at Radio One Mallorca for all your support!
Holly Dawson
Head of Fundraising and Corporate Relations Ondine
Hi Richie Thank you so much once again, glad to hear your Radiothon went so well. It would be great to see you later on in the year to give you another tour of the hospital.
I have attached some information on where we use our donations. GOSH Charity helps to fund 4 distinct areas at the hospital:
Redevelopment
Last year…
The completion of the Mittal Children’s Medical Centre in 2017 has transformed the hospital. It spans across two connecting wings, which includes the new Premier Inn Clinical Building and the Morgan Stanley Clinical Building, with a total of 240 beds and modern facilities to help give children the best possible outcome.
We’re soon to open vital new accommodation for parents to stay close to the hospital, and the Zayed Centre for Research into Rare Disease in Children – a world-leading new research facility – is due for completion in late 2018.
Research
Last year…
£13.6 million was invested and 77 pioneering research projects supported to help children with complex conditions.
Our new partnership with the children’s medical research charity Sparks will make £2 million available for child health research across the UK in 2017/18. This will be the largest fund in the UK dedicated to child health research, and will benefit children at GOSH, nationally and around the world. The first projects will be funded next year.
“Without the staff working hard to develop these new drugs and treatments, my life would be very different to how it is now.” Joe, GOSH patient
Equipment
Last year…
In 2016/17, the charity funded a fleet of new ultrasound machines that are already benefitting young patients across the hospital. Pregnancy ultrasounds have been a routine part of maternity care in the UK for decades, but this imaging technology has many other important uses at GOSH.
Ultrasound opens a window on our insides, safely and without pain. Clinicians at GOSH use it to help diagnose complex conditions, guide expert hands during surgery, and make sure babies are developing as they should in the womb.
“Thanks to a specialist ultrasound scan at 20 weeks of pregnancy, my son’s heart condition was diagnosed early” Lucy, GOSH mum.
Patient and Family welfare
Last year…
£7.8 million spent on child and family support projects.
Our range of support projects help to provide an enhanced patient and family experience. For example, a dedicated team of 38 charity-funded Play experts interact with more than 160 patients and siblings each day to bring fun into the hospital and help patients come to terms with their illness. GOSH Arts provide creative stimulation and brighten up the hospital community with art and live music. Our Chaplaincy team provide support and advice for parents, and our accommodation services keep families together.
“GOSH Arts was a wonderful breath of fresh air, on a lousy morning of treatment and rain.” GOSH parent.

I told you “It’s Coming Home!

So my headline last week was “Its Coming Home” and it certainly is in many ways!
Did you like me sit there on Tuesday night and think oh no not penalties again. I’ve lived through Germany in 1990, Germany again in 1996, Argentina in 1998, Portugal in 2004 and 2006 and Italy in 2012. And to top it all off we were on ITV a channel where we’d won only 1 World Cup knockout game and that was against Trinidad & Tobago. In the words of Private Fraser from Dads Army “We were doomed!”(one for the teenagers)or in other words we didn’t stand a chance did we! Even my 2 boys who haven’t gone through the hurt too much were despondent. We’d conceded a last minute equaliser against a team who’d done nothing all game but basically try and cheat their way to a win. Their tails were up too as they’d had the better of extra time and we looked dead on our feet. The one thing I hadn’t counted on was the intense planning the England team had done in the eventuality of a penalty shootout. Gareth Southgate has certainly done his job in meticulously planning how this England team perform in whatever task they are given. He’s certainly changed a lot of people’s opinions and all of a sudden we look a different team. Back to that shootout, my nightmares returned once Jordan Henderson had missed, but luckily the next Colombian hit the bar and then Jordan Pickford made a stunning save. Apart from Henderson all the other spot-kicks were top class and it was left to Eric Dier to score the winner. We’ve never screamed so loud when the ball hit the net, even my Wife joined in as Love Island had been delayed! To get that monkey off our backs was truly amazing, although I did have to watch it again on ITV +1 and then the highlights on BBC1 to be sure.
I talked last week of a record tv audience who watched the England v Panama game well that was beaten again on Tuesday night. A peak of 23.8m an 80% audience share, which was the highest TV share since the Olympic Closing ceremony in 2012.
A 1 minute peak of 24.4m for the Dier penalty, the highest peak for live sport since England v Portugal in Euro 2004 which was 24.7m. I’m sure that will be broken again today at 16.00 our time for Sweden in the quarter finals. I imagine it’s going to be another tough but possibly dull game with few goals. I fancy us to win 2-0 and to reach the dizzy heights of a World Cup semi-final. It’s Coming Home!
Last Monday night I was watching a compelling match between Belgium and Japan. Belgium having come back from 2 goals down to draw 2-2 so I was preparing for extra time. When one of my boys came running out of their bedroom saying Belgium had scored. How was that possible? I said, it’s a corner to Japan and we’re in the last minute. Ten seconds later the ball is in the back of the Japanese net and I realise our tv in the lounge is about 30 seconds behind the one in their bedroom, don’t you hate that! So off to bed I trudged to be greeted by the Wife watching Love Island. Now I talked about it last week being the most successful ITV2 show ever but to be honest I’ve never watched it. Without doubt it’s great publicity for the island but are these people for real? I know a lot of you are hooked by it and it’s harmless of course but one couple is called Jack and Dani, I’m going to leave it there(If you’re not sure phone a Southern friend!)
Congratulations to George Ezra the singer/songwriter who scored his first UK chart number 1 last week. Following up from songs, “Budapest”, “Blame it on me” and “Paradise”, he made it to number 1 with “Shotgun”. I found out this week that he was born in Hertford where I went to school.
Having got to number 1 he may only last one week as a song has hit the download charts with a vengeance this week. Remember I said It’s Coming Home, well Baddiel & Skinner and The Lightning Seeds’ Three Lions has reached an all time streaming high this week, according to Spotify.
The music streaming service took to Twitter to announce the song was played over 450,000 times through their platform on the day of England’s victory against Colombia. It is also top of the iTunes store outselling both George Ezra and Clean Bandit.
After passing the halfway point of 2018, the top 20 biggest selling albums of the year so far have been revealed. It should come as no surprise that the runaway success of the soundtrack to ‘The Greatest Showman’ sees it sitting comfortably at the top of the list, but there are also high rankings from new albums from George Ezra, Post Malone and Arctic Monkeys.
As the Official Charts Company reports, ‘The Greatest Showman’ has shifted a massive 931,000 copies across physical and digital combined with streaming equivalent sales. In at the second highest-selling is Ed Sheeran with ‘Divide’, having sold a massive 346,000 in 2018 alone, having also topped 2017’s chart.
The top 20 biggest-selling albums of 2018 so far are
1. ‘THE GREATEST SHOWMAN MOTION PICTURE CAST RECORDING’- VARIOUS ARTISTS
2. ‘DIVIDE’ – ED SHEERAN

I had a bit of fun last weekend on Facebook when I posted a picture of the family with our passports and asked the question, passports ready but where are we going?
Here are some of the destinations suggested.
UK, Russia, Qatar, Florida, Formentera, Bognor Regis, Cornwall, Scotland and North Yorkshire. It was in fact a wind up as we like I’m sure many others here on the island don’t venture too far out from where we live. Last year we visited friends in Porto Cristo and enjoyed ourselves so much we decided to go back. We always ask our friends what it’s like on “the dark side” and they tell us to bring our passports so we did! I have to say sometimes you need to get out there to appreciate what a beautiful and diverse island we live on. I remember saying all those years ago as a Rep how diverse the island is, I can still recite those words today. “From the mountains of the West, to the bays and beaches of the North, to the caves and coves of the East and the nightlife of the South it really is an island of contrast.
Those of you that know me know I like a crisp or three. So when I read this story I thought about clearing the shelves. Fears are growing the crisp could be the next food to be in short supply as Britain is hit by a produce ‘crisis’.
A leading UK crisp firm says the ‘Beast from the East’ cold spell that struck Britain earlier this year has caused chaos with the country’s potato crops, made worse by the current heatwave.
It comes as a CO2 shortage is wreaking havoc with other foodstuffs, causing stocks of beer, fizzy drinks and even crumpets to run out.
Soft drinks firms, brewers and cider makers cannot operate without carbon dioxide which is used to put the fizz into their products.
Alex Albone, co-founder of Pipers Crisps, said the subzero temperatures in February and March were the cause of the problem and companies face having to import crisps from abroad, although he added Pipers would only do that ‘virtually over my dead body’.
Should I start panic buying?
What a weekend of sport coming up, the World Cup, Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix and remember Its Coming Home!
Enjoy Your Weekend!
