It’s Getting Hot in Here!

Another busy week with loads going on but it does worry me that my place of birth is struggling a little at the moment. They can apparently neither cope with the cold or the heat so what hope have they got with Brexit? Couldn’t organise a jolly up in a brewery, get my drift?

After a successful World Cup Vladimir Putin must be feeling pretty good right now. Did you notice how long it took though to do the trophy presentation? Putin does the have a reputation of keeping people waiting for a meeting or an event and I’ve compiled a list of who and how long he’s kept them below.

Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany: 4hrs 15mins

Viktor Tanukovych, President of Ukraine: 4hrs

Alyaksandr Lukashenka, President of Belarus: 3hrs

Tsakhia Elbegdorj, President of Mongolia: 2hrs

Shimon Peres, President of Israel: 1hr 30mins

Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India: 1hr

Pope Francis: 50mins

The Queen: 14mins

Apparently when he met up with Donald Trump the other week they were playing cat and mouse as to who could arrive last. Putin still managed to outdo him by 30 minutes!

I’m still trying to get over my World Cup Withdrawal Symptoms, so If you thought I was scraping the barrel last week with the Hot Dog eating World Championships, I think I’ve surpassed myself. The Bottle Inn in Dorset hosts the annual World Nettle Eating Championships. Competitors are served 2-foot long stalks of stinging nettles from which they pluck and eat the leaves. After an hour the bare stalks are measured and the winner is the competitor with the greatest accumulated length of nettles. The contest began in the late 1980s when two farmers argued over who had the longest stinging nettles in their field and evolved into the World Nettle Eating Championships when one of the farmers promised to eat any nettle which was longer than his. The championship has separate men’s and women’s sections and attracts competitors from as far afield as Canada and Australia. This years winner was Phil Thorne who chomped his way through 104ft of stinging nettes, to beat his personal best of 96ft. The women’s competition ended in a dead heat with both Mel Long and Rachel Woods managing to eat 62ft. Apparently there were lot dock leaves on hand for emergencies! I’ll look out for some more weird and wacky World Championships, just 13 sleeps to go to the start of the Premier League!

‘Now That’s What I Call Music 100’ is on course to become 2018’s biggest-selling album yet, with 105,000 copies sold in its first three days on sale.

The title is currently held by its predecessor, ‘Now 99’, which sold 115,000 in its opening week back in March, according to the Official Charts Company.

‘Now 100’ features the latest hits of the moment plus a selection of popular tracks from the last 35 years, since the first NOW was released in 1983 including Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa‘s ‘One Kiss’ and Post Malone‘s ‘Better Now’ along with UB40’s ‘Red Red Wine’, The Spice Girls’ breakthrough hit ‘Wannabe’, Cher’s ‘Believe’ and Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’.

Robbie Williams is the most featured artist on the popular ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ compilations.

The 100th edition of the series was released last Friday and features Williams’ massive hit ‘Angels’. He’s had a total of 30 tracks featured across the series – the first was ‘Old Before I Die’ from the LP ‘Life thru a Lens’ on 1997’s ‘NOW 37’.

Now unfortunately I’m old enough to remember the first one, which I think I bought as a double cassette(one for the teenagers).

The artists featured the most times are;

Robbie Williams 30 times

Rihanna 27 times

Calvin Harris 27 times

David Guetta 25 times

Kylie Minogue 24 times

Girls Aloud 21 times

Brazil is a country whose football players names roll off your tongue Pele, Jarzinho, Zico, Socrates and Ronaldinho to name but a few. However every now and then they come up with some very strange old school names such as Fred, Malcolm and now Liverpool’s World record new goalkeeper Alisson. The back page headline writers had a good day this week such as “Alisson Wonderland” You can be sure the Kop will come up with a great chant of his name.
