After commenting last week about the island being a littler quieter than usual in August. I ventured out on Saturday, firstly in the daytime to illetas beach which was not only packed but the parking was horrendous. Then in the evening I went to Magalluf where all the cafes and bars along the seafront were rammed along with the bars, shops and restaurants in the new Melia Hotel. Magaluf certainly looks a lot different now than it did a few years ago and hopefully the changes continue.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the heat, so I was interested to read this report. Having a hot meal in the evening can actually help you stay cool by the sweat you perspire evaporating into the air and cooling the body.
A chilli can also be helpful, with the capsaicin found in the food sending a signal to your brain that your body is overheated – so you will sweat more to cool down. The powerful anti-inflammatory effects of turmeric make a tikka masala curry a good option.
Watermelon, turmeric and reducing the carbohydrates and protein in your diet are also good ways to beat the heat.
Top 10 tips to help cool you down.
1. Eat spinach
2. Have a bowl of soup
3. Opt for dishes with chilli
4. Eat watermelon
5. Up your turmeric intake
6. Reduce your carbohydrates
7. Cut down on meat
8. Eat onions
9. Consume dishes and drinks which contain mint
10. Look out for dishes made with coconut milk
If you like me don’t have a clue about how internet broadband speeds work then this might pass you by but the Worldwide broadband speed League has been released.
Spain surprisingly ranked at number 16, 5 places up from last year. The UK is ranked a lowly 35th down 4 places from last year, putting it in the bottom third of EU countries and below the likes of Madagascar and Bulgaria.

We talked last week about brands sticking in your memory because of a certain track or piece of music that goes with the advert. What about brands that have made it into our everyday language and conversations? Things like “When was the last time you hoovered here?”, which is really when was the last time you vacuumed? “Why don’t you Google it?” There are other search engines too!
“Can I have a Bacardi & Coke please?” Why don’t we ask for a white rum and Pepsi? We asked for some others from our listeners who came up with, Kleenex, Marmite, Britvic Orange, Sellotape and Biro.
The other part of a good brand is its logo and Britain’s favourite logo is Coca-Cola’s, according to a poll. The iconic red and white symbol was first revealed in the late 1800s and has remained largely unchanged ever since.
It’s so popular the logo can commonly found on fashionable clothing items, homeware and other desirables – while vintage items featuring the logo can sell for thousands.
The top 10 logos were;
3. Mickey Mouse (Disney)
10. PG Tips
A great evening at Port Adriano on Thursday watching The Jackson’s. They’ve not lost their moves or stage presence and the video they did on the big screen showing how they became a Worldwide phenomenon was a great watch. Good to see the port and concert packed and I thought it was a bit cheeky of the people standing on the outside looking in, slow hand clapping as they started a little late!
Looking forward to UB40 on Tuesday night.
Love Island still continues to make the headlines. ITV 2’s best ever programme is going Stateside, as CBS have announced they’ve taken the format. Love Island Australia and Germany have been filmed here in Mallorca so will the Americans do the same? It certainly is great publicity for the island.
The league for Real Mallorca starts next Sunday with a home game against Osasuna, kick-off is at 19.00. Returning to Mallorca in an Osasuna shirt is former crowd favourite Brandon. Born in Santanyi to an English Father and Spanish Mother he is a product of the Mallorca youth system. It will be interesting to see the reception he gets.
