We’re into June and still no sign of this strange weather changing, what’s going on?
I haven’t been to the beach or pool yet and I definitely was posting pictures on social media this time last year trying to annoy everybody in the UK. Now they seem to be getting the better weather. “It’ll never last” is the old adage but at the moment I’m not so sure. Surely Frinton on Sea (no offence, it was the first that came to mind) can’t be becoming more popular than us?
So as the weathers so rubbish how about this. It’s 199 sleeps to Christmas and this year’s must-have toys have been revealed!
According to the retailer Argos, 2018 will be the ‘year of the unicorn’ with toys based on the mythical creatures on its list for this year. They include the My Lovely Unicorn Electric Ride-On(£229.99) and the Poopsie unicorn(£49.99) which expels glitter.(from where??!!)
A range of dinosaur-themed Fingerlings and the LOL Surprise Under Wraps(£14.99) have also made the list, while canine TV stars Paw Patrol return with the new Rescue Fire Truck Playset. Classic items making a return to the list of expected best-sellers include the Lego City Arctic Mobile Exploration Base (£84.99)
So now you have the heads up can we get back to the Summer please?
I took the boys to see the new film Han Solo last Weekend as the weather was rubbish! We went to the Rivoli in Palma, which I’ve never been to before. It was like going back in time to the cinemas of yesteryear but the seats were comfortable and the film was great. I won’t giveaway the plot but it has loads of great references to the other Star Wars films. We’re planning on going to see Jurassic World this weekend.
Update on my ostrich egg story last week. I was contacted by a friend of mine Mickey Nuts(Don’t ask, if I told you, you wouldn’t believe me!) who tells me there’s an ostrich farm between Inca and Llubi. So all you chefs out there how about an ostrich egg fry up?
We’re just 5 days away from the World Cup in Russia. My earliest memories of the Competition is 1974 in West Germany as it was then. I was born in 1966 in case you’re wondering so that was too early! We always have high hopes for England so let’s see. My heart says go and win it but my business head says get knocked out as it plays havoc with our show schedule in Pirates.
Our World Cup Predictor League is up and running on the radio. If you were with us for the Premier League Predictor you can sign in as before and look for our code p2lil. If not please go to http://www.predictor.talksport.com and register yourself and then add our Mini league code p2lil. Myself and the Bookie will be doing our predictions on the Breakfast show so join us for some great banter during the tournament.
I had a look at some of the Worlds top players who are not going to the World Cup as their country didn’t qualify and managed to make up this team. Not bad on paper!
1. Jan Oblak Slovenia
2. Antonio Valencia Ecuador
3. David Alaba Austria
4. Virgil Van Dijk Holland
5. Leonardo Bonucci Italy
6. Naby Keita Guinea
7. Mírales Pjanic Bosnia Herzegovina
8. Gareth Bale Wales
9. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Gabon
10. Alexis Sanchez Chile
11. Riyadh Mahrez Algeria
Sad to hear of the passing of former Mallorca resident Peter Stringfellow this week. He always helped us with our Pirates Charity Premieres whether it was a prize, a donation or helping me with the auction. The comments on my Facebook page and the radio Facebook page showed how much he was loved both here and around the World. Sending my love and condolences to Bella and all of the family.
One of the stories this week that got a lot of reaction on the radio was that Salad Cream is set for a makeover. Food lovers have apparently reacted with outrage after Heinz announced it is to ditch the name Salad Cream. The jar, which has been a staple of many British cupboards since 1914, is to be given the altogether more dubious name of Sandwich Cream.
The food giant Heinz made the announcement, saying the move is necessary after 104 years following a fall in sales.
The maker claims that as only 14% of buyers actually used the gloopy white sauce on salads, the old name no longer reflects its modern purpose. Salad Cream became popular during the Second World War when tomato ketchup was in short supply.
The exact recipe is a secret but homemade versions are known to include egg, mustard, lemon juice, white wine vinegar, double cream, olive oil, pepper and sugar.
Every year 18,900 tonnes of Heinz Salad Cream is consumed in the UK and it has 60% less fat than standard mayonnaise.
We had a great reaction on Social Media when we asked what people use it for.
For me it has to be egg mayonnaise(salad cream) sandwiches.
After mentioning Palma born Jorge Lorenzo last week he went and won his first Moto GP race riding for Ducati. Good luck to Real Mallorca this weekend in their second leg play-off and hopefully Rafa Nadal wins the French Open too.
Enjoy Your Weekend!

Campeones!
I have start this week with huge congratulations to Real Mallorca who have made it back into La Segunda, the Spanish version of the Championship. After a nail biting 0-0 draw in the second leg against Mirandes last Sunday, they triumphed with a 3-1 aggregate win. I said last week the Island needs Mallorca back into La Segunda at least and hopefully after next season La Liga. It’s going to make a huge difference to local football here on the island and there’s going to be some big teams coming to the Son Moix next season, Including Malaga, Deportivo La Coruña and Las Palmas. There was great support from the fans that managed to get tickets to the game but also from all the fans that packed into Las Tortugas in Palma.
Congratulations came in from the footballing World far and wide including former Player Marco Asensio who last Saturday won the Champions League with Real Madrid. Marco is proof that through sheer hard work you can fulfill your dreams. Since leaving Real Mallorca in 2014, the 22 year old has won the Champions League twice and having been picked to play for Spain in this years World Cup. Don’t be surprised if he becomes a World superstar.
I still think it’s amazing that an island as small as ours can produce some of the Worlds greatest sportsmen. So as well as Marco there is of course the current World number 1 tennis player Rafa Nadal. The three time World Moto GP Champion Jorge Lorenzo and Rudy Fernández the basketball player whose played in the NBA and is currently starring for Real Madrid.
Continuing the sporting theme I was lucky enough to attend the wedding of former footballer David Howells on Monday. It might sound strange that an avid Arsenal fan is friends with a former Spurs player but I’ve known David since his days in the mid 2000’s when he was working on Soccer Schools in Alcudia for First Choice. Which is where he met his now Wife Sally. He played for the White Hart Lane outfit for 12 seasons making 335 1st team appearances and winning the FA Cup in 1991.
He’s a great guy who spends his time working at Charterhouse School in Surrey, scouting for young players and he is a Director of a footballers agency. It was a great party that went onto the wee small hours.
I always like to tell you about the weird and whacky things happening around the World, so how about this one. A champion cheese chaser has brie-zed(sorry) his way to another win at the death- defying bank holiday competition dubbed ‘Britain’s barmiest race.’.
The annual Cheese Rolling Race in Gloucestershire was won by soldier Chris Anderson, 30, who has now taken home the coveted Double Gloucester cheese 21 times over the past 14 years.
Thousands gather every year for the tradition – which sees runners hit speeds of up to 70mph as they hurtle down the ultra-steep 200yd Cooper’s Hill.
Mr Anderson has been crowned the grate-est of all time after breaking the 20-win record held by Stephen Gyde.
Mr Anderson left other daredevils trailing in his wake as he sprinted, tripped and tumbled in Brockworth, Gloucestershire.
The dangerous race has been banned in the past but locals have continued to keep the traditional race going. If you haven’t seen it before check it out online it’s nuts! Oh and during the photo call all the photographers shouted CHEESE! I’ll get my coat.
Now here’s something i haven’t seen in Mallorca yet, mind you I’m not sure where you’ll find the eggs. A restaurant in London is serving a massive breakfast with an ostrich egg. Eggs can weigh up to 2 kg and are sourced from a farm in Lincolnshire, which makes the dish subject to availability as ostriches hatch on good weather. It takes 25 minutes for it to fry and the Ostrich Egg Full English costs £65 and serves 4-6 people. It comes with fried tomatoes, portobello mushrooms, streaky bacon, baked beans, sourdough bread, and Cumberland sausages. Ostrich eggs are the largest laid by any bird. One egg is the equivalent of 24 chicken eggs and contains around 2,000 calories. An entire egg also contains around 144g of protein, which is almost three times the adult’s daily protein intake recommended by the NHS. I’m off for a fry up!

It’s a Sports Fest!
After last weekends royal wedding celebrations this week it’s a massive weekend of sport. Today is the Championship Play-off between Aston Villa and Fulham, followed by the Champions League Final in Kiev between Liverpool and Real Madrid. Tomorrow is the iconic Monaco Grand Prix followed by Real Mallorca’s biggest game in years as they play their second leg of their first placed play-off.
Said to be one of the richest games of football the winner of the Championship play-off will not only secure Premiership status but a financial windfall like no other. There’s an additional revenue boost of at least £160million over the next three seasons for the victor. The high-stakes match kicks off just a couple of hours before the Champions League final in Kiev involving Liverpool and Real Madrid.
But while prestige and glory is on the line in Ukraine, the European final can’t compete with the Championship play-off in terms of financial rewards.
When UEFA decided in its wisdom to play the Champions League Final in Kiev, i bet how fans were going to get there wasn’t something that they seriously thought about. As by all accounts fans of both teams have found it an absolute nightmare. Each club were allocated 16,626 tickets although Kiev’s Olympic Stadium has a capacity of 70,050, the venue has been reduced to 63,000 for the showpiece finale. While 33,252 tickets have been given to the finalists, 6,700 are available to worldwide supporters. The rest of the tickets will be reserved for hospitality members, rights holders, commercial partners, officials, players past and present as well as media. So that’s wrong to start with, where you have Europe’s and possibly the World’s biggest club game and the two protagonists only have half the stadium. Let’s not forget that Anfield Liverpool’s home ground has a capacity of just over 54,000 and the Santiago Bernabéu Real Madrid’s home ground has a capacity of just over 81,000. So to give both teams that ticket allocation is a complete joke.
Real Madrid have apparently given back 2,000 tickets not because they don’t want to go but they just can’t afford to get there and even if they do get there the cost of hotels is extortionate. One Liverpool fan I know was offered two nights in a hotel in Kiev for…wait for it….14,000€! Two nights later the same room goes out for 50.00€. The problem isn’t just limited to Kiev though. As they are so many fans that can’t go, Liverpool have sold out tickets at Anfield and at the Echo Arena. Meaning that hotels in Liverpool have also put up their prices. The rather modest Adelphi Hotel is charging north of £330.00 for Saturday night. Now this isn’t just a football problem, I’ve highlighted the same problem with concerts before.
When the tickets go on sale they are snapped up by the ticket websites and touts who buy them all up and sell them at inflated prices. Ed Sheeran has cancelled more than 10,000 tickets for his upcoming stadium tour and there are a further 500 tickets still be revoked in an attempt to beat ticket touts.
If you’re a fan with a genuine ticket or two, they’re totally safe though.
After tickets for the tour went on sale Ed’s team identified purchases by known ticket touts and promptly cancelled them.
Any tickets listed for re-sale on sites such as Viagogo have also been revoked, with fans who have purchased from those sites given assistance to claim refunds and get genuine tickets.
According to the BBC, almost £250,000 has been returned to fans who had inadvertently bought invalid tickets originally purchased by touts.
That’s the way to go about it, so why doesn’t football and its authorities do the same?
The same rules should also apply to airlines and hotels who are without doubt as I have proved above profiteering on these events. And who suffers? The supporters, the fans who support their club or who buy the artists songs and when they want to go and see them live are subsequently robbed blind.
I think I might have the answer, whilst it wouldn’t solve it completely it would mean that so many more real fans could see the game. Why not make the Final a two legged affair? Thus removing all the hotel and flight costs for the home leg and if they choose to travel to the away leg then it’s a choice not a necessity. Apart from the group stages every other round is two legged, so why not the final?
I must talk about Real Mallorca as this weekend sees their biggest game in years with the second leg of their play-off game against Mirandes. For seventy minutes last Sunday they looked unstoppable but unfortunately with all the pressing they did, they ran out of gas in the last 20 minutes and conceded an away goal. A result of 3-1 they probably would have taken before the start of the game but the way they played it should have been better. The atmosphere was great with just under 14,000 people pushing the team along. It will be interesting to see how they react to a much smaller stadium in Mirandes which holds just 6,000. There will be only 350 Mallorca fans officially there but I’m sure they’ll make themselves heard. I understand IB3 Tv will be showing the game with kicks off at 17.30.
Enjoy your weekend!

The Royal Wedding!
Did someone mention a wedding? Well unless you’ve been in total hibernation then yes today’s the day when all eyes will be on Windsor Castle. If you’re sat there reading this then like me you never got the invite!
So we’ll have to make do with watching it on TV. But what channel will you watch?
The BBC will have Huw Edwards , Kirsty Young and Dermott O’Leary with Scarlett Moffat doing some stuff for Radio1. People may question both Dermott and Scarlett not being the more traditional presenters but the BBC are obviously looking for the younger crowd who they can relate to.
ITV have Pip Schofield with Julie Etchingham, i can see why they didn’t go with Holly Willoughby but her and Pip have such a great rapport and following maybe that wouldn’t have been a bad call? The other thing here is you’ll need to contend with the ad breaks.
Sky News have a more traditional Kay Burley, Anna Botting and Alastair Bruce. They are the first to show a royal event in UHD or in Ultra High Definition to you and I which is four times the picture quality of HD.
After reading the following you might think that being in front of the tv is not so bad after all as there’s a strict code of etiquette for everyone there.
No open-toed shoes
Although the forecast is hot and sunny for Harry and Meghan’s big day, guests will have to keep their toes under wraps.
They must wear closed shoes, so no strappy Manolos allowed.
Nude tights
Not sure how they’re going to enforce this one, but ladies are required to wear tights or stockings in a nude colour.
Never leave before The Queen
The Queen is the marker for stopping and starting everything at a royal wedding. That means you don’t leave the church until she does, and you also finish eating as soon as she’s done.
That feels like a lot of pressure for HRH, but I’m sure she’ll manage.
No talking to the press afterwards
It’s pretty much a no-brainer that you don’t go blabbing to the media if you’ve attended the wedding.
Details are kept secret by the Royal Family, and it’s in good faith that nobody reveals them afterwards.
No phones or selfies
Along that same vein, guests have apparently been asked to leave their phones at home, as they won’t be allowed inside the church.
Selfies are also a big faux-pas.
Skyscraper heels are a no-no
Victoria Beckham got a bit of stick after the previous royal wedding, when her sky- high Louboutins raised eyebrows at the palace.
Queen Elizabeth is apparently not a fan of wedges either, so guests are urged to avoid those too.
Hats at all times in church
A hat is compulsory for all guests at the wedding ceremony. Even the fellas?
The kind of hat worn isn’t specified, though, so you could potentially go all out like Beatrice and Eugenie with their Philip Treacy numbers a few years back.
Use the loo between 9am and 11am
In a handbook issued to Saturday’s guests, they’re advised to go to the toilet before they get to the venue, as there will be limited facilities available.
It’d certainly be awkward to interrupt the wedding of the year to nip to the loo.
Lay off on the booze
Perhaps this should be advice for all wedding guests.
Etiquette experts have warned that drunkenness will not be tolerated.
No presents
Harry and Meghan have already asked for charity donations instead of gifts for their wedding.
Those who do shirk this advice, however, have been asked to not bring gifts to the day itself and send any presents to the family home.
I’ll be at a football pitch in Bunyola when it all kicks-off. Will their be a highlights programme later?
Apologies for missing my column last week but our Radiothon got in the way. A massive thank you to everyone who helped us, 27 hours live on the radio isn’t easy believe me but I was helped along the way by loads of amazing people. There’s too many to mention but you all know who you are and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart as without your support the charities don’t get the support they need and deserve. We’re around the 14,000€ mark but we’ll have a better idea once we get to the end of this month.
Good luck to Real Mallorca this weekend in their play-off 1st leg against Mirandes. Kick-off is 12 midday at the Son Moix and they need your support. At the time of writing just under 10,000 tickets have been sold so it would be great to get nearer to 15,000 on the day. It’s really important for the island and local football for Mallorca to get back into the second division and then if possible La Liga. Also good for local football was Atlético Baleares saving themselves from relegation on the last day of the season for exactly the same reasons as above.
As I missed last week I haven’t had the opportunity to recount mine and the boys trip to watch Atlético Madrid v Arsenal. Their new stadium is unbelievable and the atmosphere is probably one of the best I have ever witnessed. Now the result wasn’t what we wanted but the experience for the boys you can’t take away. Us losing to the eventual winners takes the pain away slightly and you shouldn’t underestimate what Diego Simeone has done to that team. There are some outstanding players there such as Oblak, Godin, Gabi, Diego Costa and Griezmann. All could walk into most teams in Europe.
On our way back from Madrid more proof in case you needed any that Ryanair push you to pay for where they want you to sit. Jude my 8yr old sat in 5E(centre), Jake my 12yr old sat in 30B(centre) & me in 31B(centre). Both seats either side of me empty. Now you can say pay to sit together but why should we when we’ve already paid? Someone sent me the rules given on seating by the CAA and I quote “The seating of children close by their parents or guardians should be the aim of airline seat allocation procedures for family groups and large parties of children. Young children and infants who are accompanied by adults should ideally be seated in the same seat row as the adult. Where this is not possible, children should be separated by no more than one seat row from accompanying adults. This is because the speed of an emergency evacuation may be affected by adults trying to reach their children.” So why is nothing being done to get them to change this policy?
Must give a shout out to my two boys and their footballing exploits. Jude my youngest a goalkeeper with his team Calviá who beat the top of the League Son Caliu by 2-1 last weekend. A few of the opposition are his school mates so all the bragging rights were his on Monday. My eldest Jacob finished his season last Sunday as top scorer with 18 goals and after a tough start his team finished a respectable 10th. We met with the club last week and he’s been asked back which is great and he’s already looking forward to next season.
Enjoy your weekend.

Radiothon Friday May 11th
As I write this I’m on my way to Madrid with my boys to watch Arsenal v Atlético Madrid in the Europa League Semi-Final. I’ll report on that next week. In the build up to our Radiothon next Friday the 11th of May I wanted to tell you about the charities we are working with this year. A couple of weeks ago I told you about the work that we’ve done with Great Ormond Street Hospital and here’s the other three. We have been working with Son Espases for 4 years now and this year we are helping the only Child Intensive Care Unit in the Balearics. From our first donation they used the money to redecorate the doors of each room with cartoon characters making them look less like hospital bedrooms. Something we learned very early on our many visits to Great Ormond Street was the biggest challenge was to make the hospitals look less like hospitals so the children could relax. We have also helped redecorate a new pirate ship-themed CAT scan in the Paediatric Department. Some 350m² of decorative vinyl wrapping gave Son Espases entry into a very select group of hospitals to implement such an idea, alongside the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York, the Hospital Municipal Jesus in Rio de Janeiro and Hospital San Juan de Dios in Barcelona. In each case they’ve proven that this fantasy décor creates a warm, inviting, relaxing atmosphere and reduces levels of anxiety – making life easier for patients and professionals alike. The number of young patients who need sedation to conduct a scan is reduced by 20%, a significant amount considering Son Espases carries out around 4,000 CAT scans in the room each year. Our total raised for Son Espases so far is 28,723.89€
Asociación Ondine
Their team of experienced marine scientists and divers work closely with local authorities and stakeholders to create an effectively managed network of Marine Protected Areas around the Balearic Islands, allowing marine ecosystems to recover and thrive together with prospering local communities and industries. Their Dos Manos initiatives have been developed to tackle one of the biggest threats to our oceans and to ourselves: plastic pollution. Through their Dos Manos Beach Cleans, Schools Programme and Partners Programme they inspire and help local communities and companies to take action while raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and encouraging innovative solutions. I have done a couple of beach clean ups with my kids and they are a great education to what is going on. You will be shocked by some of the things people dump.
Feliz Animal Andratx
Everybody that works for Feliz Animal are volunteers who work without a salary. This means that all donations will be used exclusively for the benefit of the animals.
Their daily work consists of;
Taking abandoned and homeless animals in their care.
The neutering and medical care of stray cats, and their continuous care.
Taking over animals from the municipal collection point for animals in Andratx, so they are rescued from being killed.
Education work in schools and sensible campaign’s in public media, so that domestic animals have a chance to be treated in an educated manner.
Finding new owners for all animals and also control before and after leaving the animal to the new owners. All animals are examined by a veterinary before, tested, vaccinated, and will be delivered with a passport should they have to travel abroad
Veterinary care of sick animals, castrations, vaccinations and operations.
You can help us raise as much money as possible by sponsoring an hour, challenging us to do something, bidding on our auction, buying raffle tickets, making a donation for a song or just simply making a donation. The Dog and Duck, The Red Lion, The King’s Arms and The Winchester.
All solid British pub names. No fancy wine bars or gastropubs. You know where you are with them. They’ll give you a pint, a bag of scratchings and if you’re lucky, have Sky Sports or a pool table.
Now, there’s a new name to add to that list: The Royal Dyche, named after none other than the Burnley manager Sean Dyche.
The Princess Royal pub is just a short walk from Turf Moor, and landlady Justine Lorriman is a Burnley season ticket holder. And understandably, Sean Dyche is rather popular with the staff and regulars, what with Burnley hovering around the top half of the Premier League.
Last November, the chalkboards outside the Princess Royal when viral. During the 2016/17 season, the pub announced that Dyche could drink for there for free, thanks to the club’s great performances. And then a year later, they made the big announcement: If Burnley qualified for Europe, they would rename the pub after Dyche.
It might have seemed like a crazy idea then, but after Burnley’s 0-0 draw with Brighton at the weekend, they are all-but-guaranteed to qualify for the Europa League. They are seventh in the league, six points ahead of Everton, and have a far superior goal difference. And The Princess Royal have duly obliged.
On another football note spare a thought for the fans of Brechin City who play in the Scottish Championship. After 36 games their record was, won 0, drew 4, lost 32, scored 20 goals conceded 90! Their paltry points tally is a record low in Scotland’s second tier, the worst in any division in the three-points-for-a-win era, and a joint-record overall in Scottish football. They are now unsurprisingly relegated but haven’t fired their Manager Darren Dods!
“Brechin has never been classed as a sacking club,” Chairman Ken Ferguson says.
“A great test of a manager is how players respond to them and Darren has done a great job maintaining morale in the dressing room through such a hard season. We’ve never seen the heads go down.
“If he can keep players onside in such a difficult season he must be doing something right.”
Well it’s an interesting thought but I’m not sure he’s right!
Still one point needed for Real Mallorca to become Champions and go to the first place play-offs. A disappointing 1-0 defeat in Sabadell last week means it’s squeaky bum time this weekend against 6th placed Badalona, who themselves are pushing for the play-offs. Hopefully it will be a good atmosphere at the Son Moix to get them over the line. I can’t get there unfortunately as my eldest Son Jake has a game in C’an Picafort on Sunday morning. I must give him and his team San Francisco a mention. The step up from 8 a side Alevin and a half pitch to 11 a side and a full pitch has been tough for the boys. But they’ve now won 4 games in a row which we never thought we’d see. Plus Jake with 2 goals on Sunday has made it into the top 10 goal scorers for the season with 18 goals, not bad for a midfielder. Shame the season is coming to an end.
Enjoy your weekend.

Living The Dream….
Real Madrid’s winner in the Champions League semi-final 1st leg on Wednesday night was scored by Mallorcan born Marco Asensio. Born in Son Ferrer just up the road from where I live, he went to my boys school Jaume 1 in Palma Nova. He played junior football for Playas de Calvia and moved to Real Mallorca. At the time there were a lot of Premier League clubs looking at him but he had always wanted to play for Real Madrid and his dream came true when they signed him in 2015. He was immediately put out on loan to Espanyol where he spent one season. Since then he’s making a name for himself in the first team and has been capped by Spain 10 times. My sons never stop talking about him and have a personalised signed Real Madrid shirt which sits proudly in their bedroom.
Marco’s former club Real Mallorca need 1 more point to become Champions and go to the 1st place play-offs. They are away in Sabadell this weekend, their final home game is next weekend against Badalona and then there’s one more game away at Deportivo Aragon.
I told you in an earlier column that I’m making more of an effort to go to music concerts. In February I saw The Stereophonics in Barcelona, I’m going back in June to seen Queen and Adam Lambert and then Ed Sheeran at Wembley. One band I’d love to go and see are The Rolling Stones. This week, Liam Gallagher, Richard Ashcroft and Florence & The Machine were among the huge support acts to be announced for The Rolling Stones’ UK tour this summer.
The rock icons will head out on an eight-date stadium tour across May and June, playing huge venues such as the London Stadium, Manchester’s Old Trafford stadium, and Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium.
Now, it’s been confirmed that they’re bringing along some pretty illustrious company for the ride, with former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher warming up for the Stones before their first date of the tour on May 22.
• 22 May, London Stadium – Liam Gallagher
• 25 May, London Stadium – Florence & The Machine
• 29 May, St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton – The Vaccines
• 02 June, Ricoh Arena, Coventry – The Specials
• 05 June, Old Trafford, Manchester – Richard Ashcroft
• 09 June, BT Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh – Richard Ashcroft
• 15 June, Principality Stadium, Cardiff – Elbow
• 19 June, Twickenham Stadium, London – James Bay
Fans of The Stones have also reacted with a mixture of excitement and disappointment, with many wishing that they were at the one gig where Gallagher is supporting. Me too!
It never ceases to amaze me how much coffee shops particularly in the U.K. charge for a cup of coffee. They are so popular now they even have drive thrus! Coffee made from mushrooms might sound stomach-churning to many but for those with their finger on the superfood pulse, it is a sought-after brew.
Of late there has been a trend towards more ‘interesting’ coffees, last year the turmeric latte ruled, the year before it was matcha.
Just to be clear, the lattes aren’t made from ordinary mushrooms. One Sydney cafe serving the drinks makes theirs from a mix of reishi, maitake, and shiitake.
In most instances, mushroom coffee is generally a blend of regular ground coffee mixed with a powdered fungus.
The taste is said to be ‘earthy’ and coffees tend to be made with milk (or some variant) and may have a sweetener added. The earthy flavour reminds of Blackadder goes Forth where for thirteen months, Baldrick’s coffee was in fact made from mud. With dandruff as a cunning sugar substitute. Just don’t ask what he’d been using for the milk!
While the trend is yet to become mainstream, a Finnish company, Four Sigmatic, has been blazing a fungi-flavoured coffee trail since 2012.
The company’s specially formulated products are created from ‘medicinal’ mushroom species including chaga, lion’s mane, reishi, and cordyceps.
It’s claimed mushroom coffee comes with a host of health benefits as well as offering a natural energy boost.
I’m always on the lookout for slightly left field competitions so this week I found the European Stone Stacking Championships which took place in Dunbar Scotland!
This year’s competition saw competitors from as far away as Austria and Spain battle it out for the chance to become the champion of Europe.
Stone stacking is a meditative artistic skill apparently with a growing global movement which utilities materials found in nature and balances stones on top of one another using just the force of gravity.
Stones are placed one on top of the other to produce sculptures which are held together by nothing other than gravity.
Pedro Duran from Spain was this year’s winner, who also won last year’s competition.
He is set to receive financial support to go towards his flights to the World Stone Balance Championship in Llano, Texas, which is set to take place next year. Will it become an Olympic event?
Enjoy your weekend.

Merci…Arsene!
So after last weeks rant about the weather, Summer has decided to arrive. Let’s hope it’s here to stay now.
As a massive Arsenal fan I should really comment on the news that Arsenal Wenger is to leave Arsenal at the end of the season. I have been lucky enough to be around in the most successful times for Arsenal. However over the last few years the club has declined despite winning the FA Cup 3 times in the last 4 years. My sons aged 12 and 8 do not know what it’s like to win the Premiership which would have been unheard of from 1998 to 2004 where they won it 3 times and finished second 5 times. I was lucky enough to be at the last league game of the 2003/4 season where they went unbeaten which is something that may never happen again. I really hope they go on to win the Europa League which will be a fitting send off for him. I found out this week that we will be going to Atlético Madrid for the semi final second leg and my boys can’t contain their excitement. I just hope we don’t get gubbed in the first leg! The question everybody is asking who is going to replace him. For me I would have Allegri from Juventus, Simeone from Atlético Madrid or José Enrique. The early bookies favourite is Patrick Viera which for me despite the sentimentality is not the right choice. This is a key appointment for a board that haven’t replaced the Manager in 22 years. There’s been a lot of rubbish written that Arsenal fans don’t appreciate what Wenger has done for the Club. I’d say at least 90% do but feel he’s stayed too long and should have gone 3 years ago. The other 10% are just the idiots who think by talking on Arsenal fan tv they’re representing the rest of the fans. I hope he gets the send off he deserves and as I said above winning the Europa League would be an amazing way to do it.
Last week I told you about our Radiothon which will happen on Friday May 11th from 8am until Saturday 12th at 11am. The Charities that we will be supporting this year are, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, Son Espases intensive care unit for children, Asociación Ondine and Feliz Animal Andratx. You can help us raise as much money as possible by sponsoring an hour, challenging us to do something, bidding on our auction, buying raffle tickets, making a donation for a song or just simply making a donation. If you would like to help in any way please send an email to me below or feel fee to call me on (0034) 670 704 311.
Pirates and the Radio at a later date have been supporting GOSH for 14 years now. So far we have raised 743,421.03€ and in that time the money has been put to many different projects including a Pirates treatment room. More recently the money has been spent in four main areas: rebuilding and redevelopment of the Hospital; research (GOSH are currently embarking on a 5-year research strategy to target rare diseases in childhood); latest and replacement medical equipment; parent accommodation and support services for families and patients.
We went on a tour of GOSH in November last year and it’s an amazing hospital that helps treat children around the World not only there but in all the research they do to help cure some of the most complex diseases.
We found a survey this week of the best and worst biscuits for dunking in you tea and they proved it with a time lapse video. The best was a chocolate bourbon and the worst was a Hobnob.
Best
1. Chocolate bourbon – 2 mins, 39 secs
2. Shortbread – 1 min, 20 secs
3. Jammie Dodger – 1 min, 8 secs
Worst
1. Hobnob – 15 secs
2. Malted milk – 20 secs
3. Ginger nut – 32 secs
A couple were left piping hot with anger when staff at their local Morrisons refused to sell them meat pies before 9am. Linda Gilkes got to the shop at 8.45am this week to buy eight sausage rolls and two steak bakes.
“There were no pies at all displayed,” Linda, from Middlesbrough. told Gazette Live.
“I could see bags and bags of pies, all wrapped up on cages behind the counter. The trolley was ready to be pushed out.
“But when I asked for the pies, I was told: ‘We can’t sell the pies until 9am’. I could have had a fruit pie, but not a meat pie.”
A queue of five other confused customers formed at the ‘Oven Fresh’ counter in Berwick Hills Morrisons to demand their pastry fix last Wednesday.
But staff were determined to abide pie the rules, telling customers the store had a new ‘no meat pies before 9am’ policy.
“If they hadn’t been cooked, that would make sense,” said grandmother-of-four Linda. “But the fact that they were baked, well – it’s ridiculous.
Husband Tony, who eats fish and chips three days a week(which probably isn’t healthy) and rarely touches pastry, branded the decision “stupid”.
“We have always been able to get the pies before 9am. The decision makes no sense. I can’t see any logic.”
Morrisons told The Gazette there is no “hard and fast policy” and meat pies are simply baked for 9am to match customer demand.
But Tony suggested a more sinister explanation. Sinister? Hang on we’re talking pies here!
“There’s more to this,” he said. “Morrisons have got their own agenda. Really?
“They don’t want people to know about it, They have given too many ridiculous stories about why. They contradicted themselves over and over.” Now I may be wrong but I think these people need to get out more!
Real Mallorca could be Champions this weekend if results go their way. They battled to a 0-0 draw last Sunday away at 3rd placed Elche meaning they remain 6 points clear with 4 games to go. So 2 wins would do it. But should Villareal B and Elche lose this weekend and Mallorca win, they will be Champions. They won’t go up automatically, I explained about the play-offs last week which is a little bit like explaining Einsteins theory of relativity.
Pirates have had a busy start to the summer and next Friday their adults only Reloaded show opens. I’ve seen some of the rehearsals and would thoroughly recommend a visit. You can go online at http://www.piratesreloaded.com or call 971 130411.

Charity Radiothon
Can someone ask the weather to stop teasing us please! One good day is just not good enough so please rain can you do one now and can we have some sunshine? One of my goals when I set up the radio station was to make sure we did lots of work to help Charities. The Radiothon was set up in 2015 when Jo from our office asked the Breakfast Show if we would consider broadcasting for charity for 24 hours. This was duly accepted and the Radiothon was born. For the first 2 years we helped raise money to help the Pirates Charity Premiere and their charities. When the Premiere stopped in 2016 we decided to keep the fundraising going by setting up The Jacques Sasson Foundation. Jacques will best be remembered for his invention of the Pirates Adventure show in Mallorca and employed me in 1994 and i have worked there ever since. So far, the Radiothon events have raised in total 64,319.98€ and we have made donations to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, Son Espases Intensive Care Unit for Children, Salvation Army, Shamabala Fundacion, Bloodwise, Calvia Lions, Help For Heroes, SOS Animal, Fundacion Nazareth and Club Vidalba. This year’s Radiothon will be on Friday the 11th of May from 08.00 until Saturday 11.00. I will be on air for 27 hours with my fellow presenters joining in throughout the day. You can help us raise as much money as possible by sponsoring an hour, challenging us to do something, bidding on our auction, buying raffle tickets, making a donation for a song or just simply making a donation.
The Charities that we will be supporting this year are, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. The total raised for GOSH since 2004 from Pirates and the radio since 2015 stands at 743,421.03€. Our relationship with Son Espases spans 4 years and in that time we have raised 28,723.89€. The other 2 charities we are supporting are Asociación Ondine and Feliz Animal Andratx. Over the course of the next couple of weeks I will explain to you more about the charities and what they do. If you would like to help in any way please send an email to me below or feel fee to call me on (0034) 670 704 311.
In the past week I have had the good fortune to meet two very different people from the sporting world. Firstly the presenter Dan Walker came to Pirates with his family. He works on BBC Breakfast Monday to Wednesday and presents Football Focus on Saturdays. He’s worked on 5Live and was part of the BBC coverage at the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 Olympics. A devout Christian since the age of 12, he made a decision not to work on a Sunday once he started employment and has maintained that throughout his career. The launch of the WTA Mallorca Open happened this week at the Zafiro Palace Hotel in Palma Nova. Tournament Director “Uncle” Toni Nadal was there along with the World number 11 Angelique Kerber who will be taking part in the tournament. This year it will be from the 17th of June until the 24th of June in Santa Ponsa and it’s a great grass court tournament to watch just two weeks before Wimbledon.
Kerber shocked the tennis world in 2016 by reaching the Australian Open final and upsetting heavy favorite and world No. 1 Serena Williams in three sets. Later that season she made it to her second major final, in a rematch against Serena at Wimbledon, but this time couldn’t upset the all-time great. Kerber is dangerous regardless of where she plays, having won titles on all surfaces, green clay, red clay, grass courts and hard courts in her career. She’s an aggressive counter-puncher with an all-court game, and her left-handed strokes often throw off her opponents. Kerber won a silver medal at the Rio Summer Olympics in 2016, and a month later defeated Karolina Pliskova in the U.S. Open final for her second major of the year. She became the new WTA world No. 1, ending Serena’s 186-week reign at the top.
Finally a win for Real Mallorca this week. Comfortable, playing well and 3-0 up for 75 minutes and then putting us through the ringer in the final 15 minutes where Lleida scored 2 goals. A win means they are six points clear at the top from second placed Villareal B, with 5 games to go. This weekend they play Elche who are in third place and seven points behind so a definite 6 pointer. After this weekend they play Olot(H), Sabadell(A), Badalona(H) and Deportivo Aragón(A). After that we will see.
What a week of comebacks it’s been in football this week. Barcelona losing a 4-1 lead to Roma and Real Madrid nearly going out to Juventus. All the talk though has been about that penalty and the reaction from the Juve players especially Gianluigi Buffon. For me it was a penalty, Mehdi Benatia, the guy who fouled Lucas Vazquez should have been sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity and Buffon was rightly sent off for pushing the referee Michael Oliver and basically abusing him straight in his face. At the moment we are not party to what he said but I’m sure he wasn’t wishing him a merry Christmas. Also sentiment can’t come into it either just because it was his last chance of winning a medal, it’s his last season and it was the 93rd minute aren’t excuses. The rules are the same and shouldn’t change. Would VAR have helped? Well not if you watched the pundits and everyone on social media as nobody agrees and everyone has a different opinion. Which when you think about makes football great as if it was all correct what would we have to argue about?
This has got to be story of the week. The National Poo Museum is set to get a permanent home in the Isle of Wight due to its popularity. The world renowned museum, which has dried specimens of dinosaur, human, lion, elk and other animal excrement, is currently mobile but the directors have begun a big push for a permanent home.
A £10,000 fundraising appeal has been launched so the National Poo Museum can renovate and move into Sandown Battery, a disused 19th century fort.
Visitors to the attraction will ‘discover the magic and secrets that live within poo’ as they enter the world of the number two.
The museum’s website has put a call out for donations: ‘Celebrities, would you consider donating one your actual poos to our collection?
The NPA, which started in Isle of Wight zoo, already has famous fans backing its appeal, which has reached £900 already.
BBC Springwatch host Kate Humble said: ‘The world would be a much poorer place without the National Poo Museum.
Enjoy your weekend.

Menorca & More!
As I said to you last week my Easter was spent in Menorca watching my Son play for his team San Francisco in the MeCup. Now Menorca is sometimes given a bad rap compared to the other islands but I have to say it is a beautiful island, very green at this time of the year and in a way it reminded me of England. It has an area of 702 km2, rounded by a coastline of 216 km, a distance from north to south of 47 km and from east to west of 17 km. Meaning you can get anywhere on the island in no time at all.
One of the most famous dishes on the island is caldereta or Lobster stew. The lobster is added to a sofrito of onions, tomatoes, garlic, parsley and boiled, and is eaten with thin slices of bread. It is one of the most famous dishes in Menorca and the King of Spain goes to the restaurant we were in. It’s called Can Bernat des Grau on the Mahon-Fornells road in case you go and I urge you to!
We were staying in Santo Tomas on the coast where quite a few of the teams were staying. We were told by the receptionist that they were only opening for the tournament and closing again once we left. Now I know Easter has fallen early this year meaning there is a bigger gap between that and the official start to the summer. But surely with better planning and marketing those hotels could have remained open? In a previous column I mentioned that the workforce are accustomed to only working 6 months of the year and there seems to be no desire from either the airlines, the hoteliers and therefore the workers to change this. I keep banging on about it but it needs to come from Government who should offer these businesses tax breaks to at least give them a chance. Surely it’s better for the local economy to have these people working and paying into the system rather than collecting the Dole money?
Back to the football which to be honest was tough for the boys who were playing teams that were bigger than them. They played 5 games losing 4 and winning their last game. One of the games was against Español which was the most famous team they played and although they got beaten 5-0 it was a great experience. As in fact was the whole trip, flying together as a team and travelling by coach to each match gave them a taste of life as a professional footballer. Mind you we did have to throw our Son in the shower as I swear he hadn’t done so himself in 3 days!
On Sunday we and all the teams and supporters went to the finals. There were 3 age groups, under 11’s, Under 13’s and under 15’s. It was also no surprise to see them contested by the professional teams.
The under 11’s Schalke v Español which the Spaniards won 1-0. The under 13’s Español v Villareal which was won convincingly by Villarreal 3-0. Finally the under 15’s between Barcelona and Villareal. I had made a point of going to watch Barcelona on 3 previous occasions just to see if their football philosophy runs through to the youth level. And it does, they were a joy to watch. Especially a 14 year old called Xavi Simons. Born in Amsterdam, his dad, former player Regillio Simons, happened to be a Barça fan, and more specifically, a Xavi Hernández fan. His mother, Peggy, also liked Xavi so they named their son after the then 23-year-old Barcelona midfielder. He grew up in the town of Rojales in Alicante, where the family moved when Regillio retired as a player. The young Xavi started playing football for Club Deportivo Thader, where he was handpicked by former head of La Masia, Guillermo Amor, when he was just seven years old. You have to be something special for Barcelona to be after you at such a tender age. In Barcelona they say he’s a kid who plays like a veteran. On top of that talent, Xavi has everything you need to become a fine footballer. He is hard working, competitive, constantly running where the ball is both in attack and defence, and has been a leader and captain ever since he arrived at the club. He has over one million followers on Instagram and is already playing in an older team. I watched him help destroy a team from Japan and another from Mallorca but both the semi-final against a strong Borussia Dortmund team and the final against Villarreal were a different matter. So much so that the final was a 1-1 draw which then went to penalties and surprisingly Villareal won. But believe me that boy is a talent and a name that you should look out for. A really good trip and a very well organised tournament which if your kids have an opportunity to go to in the future make sure you go. That also goes for Menorca a great alternative from our other islands.
With the first quarter of the year now behind us, the best-selling albums and songs of 2018 so far have been revealed.
Having shifted over half a million copies, the soundtrack to the Hugh Jackman-led ‘The Greatest Showman’ tops the list of albums, as the Official Charts Company reports. After spending 11 consecutive weeks at No.1, it has now enjoyed the joint- longest consecutive run in the top in 30 years with Adele’s ’21’.
Ed Sheeran follows behind at No.2 with last year’s ‘Divide’, having shifted an extra 223,000 copies of the album in 2018. Sam Smith comes in at No.3 with ‘The Thrill Of It All’ after selling 105,000 this year, followed by Rag’n’Bone Man’s ‘Human’ 100,000 of its 1.1million copies sold this year.
Elsewhere, Dua Lipa is the most successful female artist of the year so far – with her self-titled debut shifting 95,000 copies in 2018, and her massive single ‘IDGAF’ notching up 509,000 combined sales. Her video for ‘New Rules’ broke records after it was viewed over 1billion times on Youtube.
The highest-selling debut album comes from former Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello, who also ranks at No.9 in the singles chart with the runaway success of her huge single ‘Havana’.
Meanwhile, Drake‘s ‘God’s Plan’ tops the biggest singles chart after shifting 755,000 sales, as well as 76million streams.
Real Mallorca are definitely struggling at an important time of the season. Their last win was 6 games a go but they still hold a six point lead at the top with 6 games to go. This Sunday they are at home to Lleida Esportiu, kick-off at 12 midday at the Son Moix. They still look like they’ll make the play-offs but finishing top gives you 2 chances to go up in the complicated system they use over here. By finishing top they would play a two legged tie against one of the 3 other top teams in the other divisions, win that and they’d go up. Lose that and they join the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams in all the divisions in knockout games for one other place. Confusing I know, but that’s Spain for you.
Sad this week to hear of two people passing away from the sporting world who I grew up watching on TV. Ray “Butch” Wilkins the former Chelsea, Manchester United, AC Milan, Rangers, QPR and England footballer who since his retirement has been involved in coaching and punditry on TV and radio. By all accounts he was a lovely man who had time for everybody and always spoke intelligently about football. All the comments on tv, radio and social media showed you how popular he was.
Eric “The Crafty Cockney” Bristow, was World champion five times between 1980 and 1986, he also won five World Masters titles and was a founder player when the PDC was formed in 1993. He was awarded an MBE for his services to sport in 1989.
He worked as a TV pundit and was the guy behind the scenes who told the cameras where to go when the guys were throwing their darts as he knew every possible checkout. He appeared on ITV show I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here in 2012.
Both legends in their fields who will be greatly missed.
Football fans are hardy types especially those who travel away. So spare a thought for the fans of Russian second division team Baltika Kaliningrad who had to travel to Luch Vladivostok, which is 10,000km away and the quickest way to get there is flying which takes 11 hours one way! And guess what it was an awful 0-0 draw!
Enjoy your weekend.

News Across The Islands….
Wishing you all a very Happy Easter! At the time of writing this I’m in Menorca watching my eldest Son play in tournament called the MeCup. There’s over 3,500 people here for it making it an early Easter present for the island. I told you in an earlier column that Neymar, Coutinho and Casemiro played for a Brazilian team here in 2008. There are clubs from all over the World at U-11, U-13 and U-15 level including Barcelona, Manchester City, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Villarreal, Español and of course my sons team CD San Francisco. It’s an amazing experience for all the boys and to be honest I’m having a great time too! Menorca is so different from Mallorca and Ibiza and I’m looking forward to discovering more of the island while we are here.
I keep in touch with things happening on Ibiza on a weekly basis from “Our Man in San An”, Martin Makepeace. I’ve known Martin for over 20 years and every Tuesday he gives us an update on the radio about the White Isle. Big news this week from San Antonio council who voted to reduce the opening hours of all the bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants. They have to close their terraces by midnight and be cleared by 12.30am and they have to close at 3am. Yes you heard right in the so called party island everybody in the West End has to close at 3am! Is this a sign of things to come in Mallorca? Can you imagine the bars and clubs in Magaluf having to do the same here? The arguement is that there’s a noise problem that disturbs the residents in the area. Now this is not a new problem and the residents I have no doubt knew about it before they moved into the area. If this was a year round problem I would have sympathy but as Martin has told me on countless occasions Ibiza’s season lasts from June to September. Four months for all the bars, cafes and clubs to make their money and now they’ve been told they have to close at 3am. That’s a big kick in the teeth for them and for me it doesn’t make sense on so many levels. Employment, taxes, social security, rents and the knock on effect to all the companies that supply these businesses. Is it the death knell? Well some might see it as an opportunity for change, but why change when in reality it’s not broke. Martin told me “it’s a sad day for San Antonio but not unexpected. An area famed for nightlife is being targeted by a council that detests the tourism that the town attracts. You can now get a later drink in most UK towns than in the West End of San Antonio!”
As I said above it’s a coalition council and my understanding is the PP voted against the change but are in a minority. There are local council elections coming up in May 2019 so it will be interesting to see if this is part of their manifesto to reverse the decision.
Talking of local elections and reversing decisions did you see Biel Company, the President of The Partido Popular in the Balearics tell the councillors of the PP from all four of the Balearic Islands that the party will repeal holiday rentals legislation and zoning criteria if it wins the election in May 2019. Now lots of things get promised by political party’s to get into power and when they do get in you then you get the old well we didn’t realize how difficult it would be…blah, blah, blah. I remember one party promising to rehouse the Mallorca cricket club as they thought it would help with the Expat vote, as we know it never happened and as I said last week they can’t get a team together for the Balearic Cup. Another thing to think about is that if we do leave the EU on the 29th of March next year we will not be allowed to vote in the local elections. That came from the International Department of Calviá Town Hall.
Real Mallorca struggled again last Weekend and only a last minute debatable penalty got them a point away in Hercules. Good to see Lago Junior back playing as he is a game changer and his “Panenka” penalty in the last minute was coolness personified. Mind you if I was the Manager I’d be going nuts at him to blast it as hard as he could. Another away match for Mallorca against Valencia B on Sunday. They are the leagues top scorers but also leak quite a few at the other end so hopefully Mallorca can get back to winning ways. It looks like the away game against Elche in two weeks could be the pivotal one to decide who finishes top. It’s in Mallorca’s hands with 7 games to go so let’s hope they get that all important first place.
Every Monday on the radio we have a feature of all the films at the cinemas in English. We do this in conjunction with Michael Barnes who has a great Facebook page called Mallorca Cinema Showings – English. Last Weekend Peter Rabbit was showing at the Ocimax, Michael said that there was more interest in his post about it than other in the two years since the Facebook page began. So much so that the early showing sold out leaving some people disappointed. That hasn’t happened apparently since the last James Bond film. Always best to check before you go and don’t forget you can buy your tickets online.
Before I left for Menorca I went to the dress rehearsal of Pirates. Great to see some of the old faces and plenty of new ones too. I have to say the changes they’ve made to the show are refreshing and as always the level of acrobatics is unbelievable. Even if you’ve been before get yourselves a ticket it’s 3 hours of non stop of great entertainment with food and drink too! They have 2 shows next week on the 4th and 6th of April at 18.00., book online at http://www.piratesadventure.com or call 971 130411.
Enjoy your weekend.
