Radiothon Friday May 11th

As I write this I’m on my way to Madrid with my boys to watch Arsenal v Atlético Madrid in the Europa League Semi-Final. I’ll report on that next week. In the build up to our Radiothon next Friday the 11th of May I wanted to tell you about the charities we are working with this year. A couple of weeks ago I told you about the work that we’ve done with Great Ormond Street Hospital and here’s the other three. We have been working with Son Espases for 4 years now and this year we are helping the only Child Intensive Care Unit in the Balearics. From our first donation they used the money to redecorate the doors of each room with cartoon characters making them look less like hospital bedrooms. Something we learned very early on our many visits to Great Ormond Street was the biggest challenge was to make the hospitals look less like hospitals so the children could relax. We have also helped redecorate a new pirate ship-themed CAT scan in the Paediatric Department. Some 350m² of decorative vinyl wrapping gave Son Espases entry into a very select group of hospitals to implement such an idea, alongside the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York, the Hospital Municipal Jesus in Rio de Janeiro and Hospital San Juan de Dios in Barcelona. In each case they’ve proven that this fantasy décor creates a warm, inviting, relaxing atmosphere and reduces levels of anxiety – making life easier for patients and professionals alike. The number of young patients who need sedation to conduct a scan is reduced by 20%, a significant amount considering Son Espases carries out around 4,000 CAT scans in the room each year. Our total raised for Son Espases so far is 28,723.89€

Their team of experienced marine scientists and divers work closely with local authorities and stakeholders to create an effectively managed network of Marine Protected Areas around the Balearic Islands, allowing marine ecosystems to recover and thrive together with prospering local communities and industries. Their Dos Manos initiatives have been developed to tackle one of the biggest threats to our oceans and to ourselves: plastic pollution. Through their Dos Manos Beach Cleans, Schools Programme and Partners Programme they inspire and help local communities and companies to take action while raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and encouraging innovative solutions. I have done a couple of beach clean ups with my kids and they are a great education to what is going on. You will be shocked by some of the things people dump.
Feliz Animal Andratx
Everybody that works for Feliz Animal are volunteers who work without a salary. This means that all donations will be used exclusively for the benefit of the animals.
Their daily work consists of;
Taking abandoned and homeless animals in their care.
The neutering and medical care of stray cats, and their continuous care.
Taking over animals from the municipal collection point for animals in Andratx, so they are rescued from being killed.
Education work in schools and sensible campaign’s in public media, so that domestic animals have a chance to be treated in an educated manner.
Finding new owners for all animals and also control before and after leaving the animal to the new owners. All animals are examined by a veterinary before, tested, vaccinated, and will be delivered with a passport should they have to travel abroad
Veterinary care of sick animals, castrations, vaccinations and operations.

The Dog and Duck, The Red Lion, The King’s Arms and The Winchester.
All solid British pub names. No fancy wine bars or gastropubs. You know where you are with them. They’ll give you a pint, a bag of scratchings and if you’re lucky, have Sky Sports or a pool table.
Now, there’s a new name to add to that list: The Royal Dyche, named after none other than the Burnley manager Sean Dyche.
The Princess Royal pub is just a short walk from Turf Moor, and landlady Justine Lorriman is a Burnley season ticket holder. And understandably, Sean Dyche is rather popular with the staff and regulars, what with Burnley hovering around the top half of the Premier League.
Last November, the chalkboards outside the Princess Royal when viral. During the 2016/17 season, the pub announced that Dyche could drink for there for free, thanks to the club’s great performances. And then a year later, they made the big announcement: If Burnley qualified for Europe, they would rename the pub after Dyche.
It might have seemed like a crazy idea then, but after Burnley’s 0-0 draw with Brighton at the weekend, they are all-but-guaranteed to qualify for the Europa League. They are seventh in the league, six points ahead of Everton, and have a far superior goal difference. And The Princess Royal have duly obliged.
On another football note spare a thought for the fans of Brechin City who play in the Scottish Championship. After 36 games their record was, won 0, drew 4, lost 32, scored 20 goals conceded 90! Their paltry points tally is a record low in Scotland’s second tier, the worst in any division in the three-points-for-a-win era, and a joint-record overall in Scottish football. They are now unsurprisingly relegated but haven’t fired their Manager Darren Dods!
“Brechin has never been classed as a sacking club,” Chairman Ken Ferguson says.
“A great test of a manager is how players respond to them and Darren has done a great job maintaining morale in the dressing room through such a hard season. We’ve never seen the heads go down.
“If he can keep players onside in such a difficult season he must be doing something right.”
Well it’s an interesting thought but I’m not sure he’s right!
Still one point needed for Real Mallorca to become Champions and go to the first place play-offs. A disappointing 1-0 defeat in Sabadell last week means it’s squeaky bum time this weekend against 6th placed Badalona, who themselves are pushing for the play-offs. Hopefully it will be a good atmosphere at the Son Moix to get them over the line. I can’t get there unfortunately as my eldest Son Jake has a game in C’an Picafort on Sunday morning. I must give him and his team San Francisco a mention. The step up from 8 a side Alevin and a half pitch to 11 a side and a full pitch has been tough for the boys. But they’ve now won 4 games in a row which we never thought we’d see. Plus Jake with 2 goals on Sunday has made it into the top 10 goal scorers for the season with 18 goals, not bad for a midfielder. Shame the season is coming to an end.
