We may have just about seen the last of the prolonged good weather. Judging by next weeks forecast grab any sunshine you can this weekend.
Adele’s “21” has been named as the UK’s most successful album of the 21st century. Announced to coincide with National Album Day last Saturday, a list of the country’s 20 best-selling albums over the past 20 years has been released.
The album, which features hits such as ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and ‘Someone Like You’, has sold over a million copies more than the second biggest-seller, Amy Winehouse‘s ‘Back To Black’.

So as last weekend and this week has been an international break in football, you get stuck for some good sport to watch. Japan seemed the best place to go with the Rugby World Cup and the Formula 1. I did find a couple of other events though, I’m not sure whether you can class them as “sport”
An Englishwoman has won the World Porridge Making Championship title.
Lisa Williams, from Suffolk, claimed the “golden spurtle” in the 26th annual competition, which is held in Carrbridge in the Highlands of Scotland. Just in case you don’t know the spurtle is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool, dating from the fifteenth century, that is used to stir porridge, soups, stews and broths.
The rod-like shape means that porridge can be stirred without congealing and forming lumps, unlike a spoon that would have a dragging effect during stirring, and the low surface area reduces the chances of porridge sticking to the instrument.
The title is awarded to the contestant deemed to have made the best traditional porridge using just three ingredients; oatmeal, water and salt.
Linda William’s winning recipe was made with half Scottish oatmeal and half pinhead oatmeal, along with Maldon sea salt. Ms Williams, who has entered the competition three times before, said the trick to the perfect porridge was to ‘keep stirring’
The judges(not the 3 bears I’m reliably informed)tasted more than 60 porridges throughout the day made by contestants from Sweden, Russia, France, Poland, Canada, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, Belgium and Germany. Now I love a porridge but with salt? No thanks, golden syrup or honey for me.
The World Conker Championships has taken place despite play being delayed due to heavy rain, not quite sure why they didn’t move it inside?
Conkers are provided for each game and cannot be tampered with or reused.
There must be at least 20cm (8in) of lace between knuckle and nut.
Each player takes three alternate strikes at their opponent’s conker, with a game decided once one of the conkers is smashed.
If a game lasts for more than five minutes it is halted and each player will be allowed a further nine strikes
If neither conker is smashed, the winner is the player who hit the nut the most times during this period.
Jasmine Tetley, went on to claim the 2019 title after beating Andy Moore in the final. The event is said to have raised £420,000 since 1965 for the blind and partially sighted.
Definitely a Super Saturday of football today, my youngest Son Jude finally starts his competitive football season this morning. After nearly two months of training and friendly matches his team kicks off against of all teams Calvia. They are the team he left 2 years ago to join San Francisco so for him it’s a must win game. Jude is a goalkeeper and since he’s moved clubs he’s improved no end helped by the people in the club and a goalkeeping school called Porteros Pablo Roca. He was also lucky enough to meet former Real Mallorca and Israeli international goalkeeper Dudu Aouate this week who has seen him play and train as his Son plays at the club. Just 10 minutes of advice from Dudu was great for him to hear and hopefully he’ll take it onboard. Since the Summer he’s also worked on his fitness by going to the boxing classes at the Shambhala Gym in Santa Ponsa. They say you have to be mad to be a keeper well my son has that in bundles!
My eldest Jacob drew last weekend away at the top of the league 1-1. So unbeaten now in three they’ll look to continue their good form on Saturday afternoon. Straight from those 2 games we’ll be off to the Son Moix to watch Real Mallorca v Real Madrid which kicks off at 9pm. These games are why we wanted to get back to La Liga. The opportunity for me and the boys to watch players such as Courtois, Ramos, Modric, Hazard and Bale(hopefully) close up is unbelievable and something we’re really looking forward to. Can Mallorca get a result against the team currently top of the league? They’re supposed to be playing rubbish but they’re top after 8 games and unbeaten. Let’s see, stranger things have happened. If you’re going my advice is to get there early as parking will be a nightmare.
Sunday will see our other professional team first placed Atlético Baleares against second placed UD Ibiza in Segunda B Group 1. Their ground Estadi Municipal de Can Misses holds 4,500 and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s full on Sunday. I’m expecting a full report from Martin Makepeace aka “Man in San An” on the radio and on his weekly blog.
With all that football going on I’m not sure I’ll have time to watch the Rugby World Cup Quarter Finals but I’ll be keeping an eye on the results. Come on England!
