I know I’ve been banging on about kids football from U-11’s and below returning and I’m pleased to say that after 13 months the authorities have finally decided it’s ok for them to come back. Why now? What’s changed? Well to be honest, nothing that I can see that couldn’t have been done earlier in a controlled environment like they did with the older ones.
So next week the games start. All of the clubs have been divided into groups of 10 and they will play 9 games between now and June 19th. It will be great to see the kids play a competitive game and my youngest Son cannot wait.
Real Mallorca once again have failed to put their promotion to bed. After beating Lugo at home comfortably 2-0 last weekend, they went to Castellón yesterday and despite dominating the possession and chances they managed to lose 1-0. They were missing two of their top scorers in Amath and Abdon but they should have had enough to beat a team in 16th place. The only saving grace is that first placed Espanyol are playing third placed Almeria Monday night at 21.00. Mallorca currently lie two points behind Espanyol and eight points clear of Almeria. Looking at it you would want a draw or a win for Espanyol. If and it’s a big IF, Almeria win tomorrow and then again next weekend, they would be just two points behind Mallorca. That’s because Mallorca don’t play Sabadell away until next Monday. Seven games to go for Mallorca and they’re not making easy for themselves or us as fans!
Good win for UD Ibiza against Barcelona B last weekend as they continue their quest for promotion to La Liga Smartbank. Another difficult game away at Gimnastic Tarragona today in one of the best stadiums outside of the top two leagues.
A good away win for Atlético Baleares 0-2 against Villanovense last week and they seem to be in a much better place now than in the main season. Their quest is to stay where they are currently playing in the new pyramid system. Today they play AD Merida.
Peña Deportiva won again beating L’Hospitalet 2-0 and hopefully maintain their position in the new system. They should have been playing Espanyol B this weekend but the game has been called off due to outbreak of Covid in the team from Barcelona.
UD Poblense are still struggling, last week they were 3-0 down at UD Melilla but with two late goals they made a fight of it but eventually went down 3-2. They could do with a home win today against Villarrobledo.
In Tercera it’s got very Interesting as the top three teams merge from each sub group to play each other. Platges de Calvia, Andratx and Constancia from Mallorca, Ibiza Pitiusas and PE Sant Jordi from Ibiza and Formentera make up an exciting play-off push.
In Division Honor, Real Mallorca, CD San Francisco and Penya Arrabal from Mallorca have been placed in Group 3D with another seven teams. The top four will keep their Division Honor status and the rest will be relegated to Juvenil Nacional.
I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that two Baleares born football players were playing in the Champions League quarter finals. That was increased to three this past week with Mallorca born Marvin Park being part of the Real Madrid squad against Liverpool. Once again showing our islands are producing some top players.
Take care everyone.
