A good 3-0 home win for Real Mallorca against Ponferradina the weekend before last took them to second place in La Liga Smartbank. Followed up by a battling 1-0 win at Girona. They are now two points behind the leaders Espanyol, who surprisingly lost on Friday night at home to Girona. Dani Rodriguez is their current top scorer with 5 for the season and he’s fourth top goalscorer in the league which is a great return for an attacking midfielder. Without doubt it’s their defensive record which is helping them, just 2 goals conceded in 12 games. If they win on Sunday they would go top. It will be difficult though as their opponents are third placed Sporting Gijón.
Martin Valjent and Aleksandar Trajkovski have made history with their countries having qualified for next summer’s European Championships. Although they were unused substitutes in the play-off finals, the former’s Slovakia reached their second-ever European Championships courtesy of a 2-1 win over Northern Ireland in extra time, while Trajkovski and North Macedonia have qualified for the tournament for the first time in their history.
Mallorca have been drawn away to Segunda B side CD Guijuelo in the first round of the Copa del Rey.
Their cup campaign will kick-off with a trip to the Estadio Municipal de Luis Ramos on the 16th of December. Founded in 1974 and having finished 9th in their division last season, it will be the first time they’ve faced the team from Salamanca in their history.
With the Copa Del Rey in mind, an amazing story for CD Cardasser over on the East of Mallorca. It is home to the “Love Island” Villa and 2 years ago the town suffered devastating floods. Their ground was completely wrecked as you can see above. They play in the third division here in Mallorca and a few weeks ago they qualified for the 1st round of the Copa Del Rey. Last week the draw was made and they drew Atlético Madrid at home! Their ground can only hold 600 spectators which is a shame as I’m sure a lot of people would like to watch the game. But might give them a squeak of an advantage over the team currently second in La lIga.
In Segunda B Division it’s a mixed bag for all of our sides.
Atlético Baleares restarted training last week after 11 playing and non playing staff went down with coronavirus. They have followed all the protocols and now they’re free to return. They haven’t played for two weeks but return to action today against UD San Sebastián Reyes.
UD Ibiza continúe to dominate their league, four wins from four leave them four points clear at the top. This week they are away in against Valencia B.
UD Poblense are still battling away, drawing three of their first four games. Scoring goals seems to be the problem with just two so far but having only conceded three they are managing to pick up points. They have a difficult away game this week against Rayo Majadahonda.
Peña Deportiva are holding their own in fourth place having only lost one of their opening four games.
This weekends fixtures are;
Atlético Baleares v UD San Sebastián Reyes. Sunday 12 Midday
Rayo Majadahonda v UD Poblense Sunday 12 Midday
Valencia B v UD Ibiza Sunday 12 Midday
Peña Deportiva v CF La Nucia Sunday 12 Midday
Real Mallorca v Sporting Gijón Sunday 16.00
In Tercera División group A, Andratx lost their first game at home to second placed Manacor but are still top four points clear. In Group B, Platges de Calvia lead by three points from second placed PE Sant Jordi.
In Division Honor the highest league in Youth football, the local derby between CD San Francisco and Penya Arrabal took place last week. San Fran ran out 4-1 winners to take their first points of the season. The league is currently being led by Girona, Penya are in third, San Fran in Sixth and Barcelona a surprisingly lowly eighth.
My eldest son Jakes team San Francisco Cadete B haven’t got off to a great start losing home and away to Sollerense. Both close at 2-1 and 3-2 but hopefully they’ll win next weekend against Patronato.
Take care everyone.
