Without doubt the best Feelgood story this week has been about Cpt Tom Moore who was walking 100 lengths of his garden for NHS Charities Together because as he said “our fantastic NHS workers are national heroes.” We picked up this story on Tuesday from another radio station. His intention was to raise £1,000 for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his 25-metre long garden before the 30th April, his 100th birthday. On Tuesday morning he was already at £800,000 and the story just grew and grew. Thursday morning he completed the walk but has said he will keep walking while people keep donating. To date at the time of writing the total is over £18,000,000 which is unbelievable. He is now the biggest single fundraiser ever on Just Giving. There are calls for him to be knighted which would be a fitting ending to a wonderful story.
The ‘We’ll Meet Again duet with Dame Vera Lyn and Katherine Jenkins has reached number one on iTunes’ top songs. The pair joined forces to re-release Dame Lynn’s famous wartime song in support of NHS workers and their families. The song had seen a recent surge in popularity after the Queen made reference to it in her historic address to the nation on April 5th. All of the money raised from sales of the duet are going to NHS Charities Together.
Following on from the enormous success of Bohemian Rhapsody the biopic film of Queen and their frontman Freddie Mercury and Rocket Man about Elton John another biopic is in the pipeline. Boy George confirmed in 2019 a film will be made about him and he’s recently admitted his movie will be a lot more rock and roll in comparison to those other movies.
Questions fans are asking, who will play Boy George? When will the film be out? And what will the story entail? News is sketchy right now so we’ll have to wait a little bit more.
Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’ tops a list of the most played songs of the 2010s.
The singer’s track was released in 2013 and spent four non-consecutive weeks at the top of the UK charts that year.
The list, compiled by music licensing company PPL, also puts Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ in second place, and ‘Moves Like Jagger’ by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera in third.
But that’s not all for Williams, as he appears again fourth with ‘Get Lucky’, his collaboration with Daft Punk and Nile Rodgers.
Pharrell said: “Thank you, thank you. It is incredibly humbling to think that Happy is the most played song across radio in the UK for the past decade.
“When I was a little boy hearing those letters, UK, and thinking about the culture and seeing all of my favourite artists that I loved as a child go over and perform big concerts and festivals, I just never ever thought that anything that I would ever do would be part of that history.
“I always want people to hear my songs, as many people as possible, people that really need it.

One of the things I love about radio is you can start talking about a subject and it suddenly gets great traction with the listeners who then take it over. Now I’ve always thought that a breakfast show should be fun, particularly at the moment. So Ayesha and I tend not to talk about too serious subjects. This week we started to talk about crisps sandwiches and it went mad. This was in conjunction with Stylist magazine who’d done a story on the subject and talked about which crisp made the best sandwich.
The core elements of a good crisp sandwich are, you need soft white bread, nothing too crunchy, or it’ll negate the impact of the crisp, and nothing too fancy – which basically means you must avoid anything with seeds or grains, as you’ve already got crisp crumb-spray to deal with. Plus the fact this isn’t really the healthiest snack.
Real butter, too, is preferable to any margarine or spread: delicious, creamy, yellow as the sun on a summer’s day. Spread it on thick, spread it on heavy, and spread it right up to the crusts!
Here are 5 of our listeners favourites.
Egg and salad cream stuffed with salt and vinegar chip sticks.
Walkers cheese and onion crisps, ham and Nandos medium sauce.
Laughing cow cheese spread with prawn cocktail crisps.
Any crisps with Kraft cheese triangles and or Bovril.
Warburton’s toastie with lurpak, wafer thin ham and Walkers salt and vinegar.
I’m sure you all have your own favourite and having read this you’ll probably have one now.
Take care everyone and enjoy your weekend!
