Since we started the radio station eight years ago it was always our intention that we were a community station that did a lot of charity work. We were looking at different ways of doing this and five years ago Jo from our radio office asked if we would consider doing a 24 hour non-stop radio broadcast. To be honest she thought we’d say she’s mad but I thought it was a great idea and the Radiothon was born. Little did I know that 5 years later through the generosity of all our listeners we would pass through 100,000€ raised. It’s an incredible achievement of which I am immensely proud.
Charities that have benefitted since we started are, GOSH, Son Espases Intensive Care Unit, Salvation Army, Shambala Foundation, Bloodwise, Calvia Lions, Help For Heroes, SOS Animal, Fundacion Nazareth, Club Vidalba, Asociacion Ondine and Feliz Animal Andratx.
Charities that will benefit from this year’s Radiothon are, Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital, London. A charity that along with Our friends at Pirates we have raised nearly 750,000€ and we have carried on supporting each year.
Son Espases Childrens Intensive Care Unit, Palma. Another that gets our support each year.
Our new charities this year are, Asdica, A dynamic socio-educational project aimed at adolescents and young people with intellectual disabilities and their families in the Municipality of Calvià.
Aspanob Created in 1987 by a group of parents who came together with the aim of improving the quality of life of all children with cancer and their families in the Balearic Islands.
Our target this year was to raise at least 19,162.52€ that was the number that would take us through the 100,000€ mark. Always a difficult task as it’s impossible to predict how well the fundraising will go. One thing I love and have learnt about this island is that charity is always high in people’s thoughts and the generosity here bears no boundaries.
So beginning last Friday at 08.00 I was hoping that we could achieve our dreams. I’m not sure if I can write about everything that happened in the 36 hours as I’m only given a page in the newspaper! What I wrote on Facebook the following day, sums it up perfectly. “Can’t thank you all enough. When we call you listen and to raise 22,848.33€ in 36 hours is unbelievable. We smashed our target & it means we go through 100,000€ after 5 Radiothons. Thank you! x” We went to a restaurant afterwards where all of sudden the lack of sleep finally caught up with me, see above!
We still have raffle tickets available if you’d like to buy some as the draw is not until Friday 31st of May on my Breakfast Show.
Congratulations to Atlético Baleares who’ve done what Real Mallorca did last and win their regional group 3. Winning the Championship unfortunately doesn’t win you automatic promotion in Segunda B. The final round of games come up this weekend with Baleares away to second placed Hercules. I’m sure their attention will be on which teams are going to join them. Group 1 you can perm 1 from 3 including Ponferradina, Athletico Madrid B or the favourites Fuenlabrada. Group 2 has been won by Racing Santander and Group 4 is also a 3 horse race between FC Cartagena, UD Melilla and the favourites Recreativo Huelva. I interviewed Sam Shashoua who is on loan from Premier League club Spurs this week and I will bring that to you next week.
After the euphoria of last weeks last minute win for Real Mallorca you would think that an away game at relegation threatened Gimnastic would be a formality. But Mallorca who still have the second best home récord reverted back to type away from home and lost. I said a few weeks ago that it’s a different team that travels away to the one that plays at home. Of the 64 points won so far, 45 have come at home and just 19 away. That is probably going to be the difference between making promotion automatically or finishing in the play-offs. Mallorca are at home this Sunday at 12 midday.
Enjoy your weekend!
