We were back in the UK last weekend. I often get asked, do you miss it? Family of course and real ale, so it was great to see both our families and take in a couple of pubs too. When we picked up our hire car the girl said to us that when we return can we make sure we hand the keys back to a member of staff. Well that’s normal isn’t it? Apparently not, there’s been people posing as staff who’ve taken the keys and then stolen the vehicle. That’s happened 5 times to this particular firm since the new year! We stayed at the Bedford Swan Hotel run by former Mallorcan resident Malcolm Wyse and I can’t recommend it enough.
A few weeks ago I mentioned I’ve started training. Last Friday marked the end of the first month. I want to say a big thanks to Paul Hamilton & all the guys at Club Esportiu Shambhala in Santa Ponsa for their help & encouragement. So now we step it up the Radiothon on May 10th & 11th and we would like you to sponsor me for every inch I can lose from my waist. Paul has the starting number since the beginning of February and at the Radiothon we will reveal the starting waist measurement and the finishing one.
The Radiothon started 4 years ago when we set up the Jacques Sasson Foundation. Jacques the legendary former owner of Pirates who used to love doing charitable things. In the past it’s been a 24hr non-stop Show with me and my fellow presenters helping me throughout the day. So this year we thought we’d take it a little further so we’re starting at 07.30 Friday morning and finishing 19.30 Saturday evening. That’s 36 hours non-stop which should be challenging. Since we started we’ve raised just over 80,000€ so our aim is to pass through the 100,000€ mark. Charities that have benefitted since we started are, GOSH, Son Espases Intensive Care Unit, Salvation Army, Shambala Foundation, Bloodwise, Calvia Lions, Help For Heroes, SOS Animal, Fundacion Nazareth, Club Vidalba, Asociacion Ondine and Feliz Animal Andratx.
This year we are raising money for;
Great Ormond Strret Childrens Hospital, London. A charity that along with Our friends at Pirates we have raised nearly 750,000€ and we have carried on supporting each year.
Son Espases Childrens Intensive Care Unit, Palma. Another that gets our support each year.
Our new charities this year are, Asdica, A dynamic socio-educational project aimed at adolescents and young people with intellectual disabilities and their families in the Municipality of Calvià.
Aspanob Created in 1987 by a group of parents who came together with the aim of improving the quality of life of all children with cancer and their families in the Balearic Islands.
Now we can’t do this without your help so they’ll be plenty of ways you can support us. You can sponsor an hour and come and join me in the studio, pay for a song to be played, challenge us to do something, buy raffle tickets, bid on an auction item, sponsor me on my weight loss or just make a donation. Controversy in the UK Wife Carrying Championships last weekend as the winners were not actually married. Surely that’s disqualification? Well no apparently but Chris Hepworth was obviously feeling guilty so he asked his girlfriend Tanisha Prince to get married. The couple also won the race last year and will now go on to enter the world championships in Finland. Yes really!
Most couples opted to race in what organisers call the “Estonian hold” position, which involves the person being carried hanging upside down on the carrier’s back with their thighs dangling on to their chest. They had to clamber over hay bales, go up and down a hill and have buckets of water thrown in their faces while they raced over the 380m-course.
Talking of strange events the World Pasty Championships took place last weekend too. Each year, pasty-makers from around the Globe take part in this unique event to find the pasty champions of the world.
Professionals, amateurs, the young and the not so young come together at the Eden Project in a day of music and fun where Cornwall’s hero product is the unquestionable hero of the day. Now I love a pasty(not at the moment obviously!) but don’t give me any of these fancy flavours. The plain old traditional is the one for me.
Real Mallorca could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Elche last weekend. Disappointing as they have been so good at home this season. Another home game this Saturday against Real Oviedo, kick-off at 16.00 down at the Son Moix. They lie in 9th place but the gap to the play-offs is a little wider at 5 points. Atlético Baleares battled to a 0-0 draw away in Olot last weekend and they are back on their travels again this Sunday against Ontinyent. They are though still top of the league 3 points clear of Villareal B with 11 games to go.
You might have gathered from above that due to the extended holiday my boys had the weekend off but we’re back to it this weekend with my youngest playing Real Mallorca and my eldest against Genova.
