With 44 sleeps to go to Christmas our thoughts on the radio turn to those who may not be as lucky as you and I when it comes to the festive season. We have been running a campaign called “Help a Mallorca Child” for the last 5 years helping bring a smile to children at Christmas who for one reason or another have been dealt a bad hand. This year, between now and the 15th of December we’re asking you to donate to the Radio One Mallorca Help a Mallorca Child Appeal and Age Concern Christmas Hamper Appeal.
We are helping the Salvation Army who organise a Christmas Party for under privileged Children in Palma. You can donate either new or used toys in good condition which will be wrapped and given to the children.
Son Espases Children’s intensive care unit is the only one in the whole of the Balearics. In the past your donations have helped decorate the ward to make it more child friendly and we have helped decorate along with Pirates an MRI scanner. We have also bought toys and games that help both the children and their families get through what is a very difficult period of their lives.
Fundación Nazaret in Palma, after more than eighty years, thousands of children have received the support of this Foundation. They have faithfully fulfilled the wishes of our founders to welcome both boys and girls from families who could not satisfy the needs of their children. I visited them this week and they have between 50-60 children in residence of varying ages and their mission is to promote the integral education of minors to transform and improve their present and future personal situations. They do a great job and said anything we can do makes a huge difference to these kids lives at Christmas.
Two years ago we decided to extend the Christmas cheer to the senior citizens of the island by helping our friends at Age Concern. Jackie and her team do an amazing job as they do not receive funding from AGE UK, any government or other organisation and they are a totally non- profit, non-political, non-denominational and non-judgemental. They are all unpaid Volunteers, who just want to help others. We are asking for food donations to help make Christmas hampers for the elderly across the island. Please put something extra into your shopping basket especially if it’s Christmassy.

We can accept toys, food and donations at our studios in the Wave House Hotel in Magaluf, the Pirates Adventure Head office in Magaluf and we can collect from you too. Ian Johnston and the guys from Bosuns Locker have kindly offered to collect from the ports and marinas and we can collect from your workplaces or homes. All the Charities will distribute on our behalf. Help us to bring a smile to lots of faces this Christmas.
Big news in the music world this week was the return of the Spice Girls, well 4 of them. Confirming their return on Twitter, the group shared a video that saw Geri Horner, Mel B, Emma Bunton and Mel C delivering a mock news bulletin. But as I previously said, the 5th Victoria Beckham will not be following the group on the tour. She’s probably the only one that doesn’t really need the money which is a reported £10 million each.

The iconic girl power group initially split in 2000 after Geri Halliwell left the group. They reunited for a massive comeback tour in 2007 and 2008, before their final performance at the Olympics Closing Ceremony in 2012.
I noticed that they’ve been really clever, firstly apart from Wembley the stadiums aren’t huge so there are less tickets to sell. Secondly having Jess Glynne as their support act they’re guaranteed a much younger audience too. Apparently they have options of other dates and venues depending on tickets sales so let’s see what happens. I have to hold my hands up and say I saw them with my Wife the last time they reunited at the O2 London. My abiding memory was a forty something Woman dancing in a Union Jack dress next to me who definitely should have taken heed of one of their songs which says “Stop right now!”
Real Mallorca got a battling 1-1 draw away at Real Oviedo and by all accounts probably should have got all three points. This weekend they are at home to Córdoba with kick-off at the Son Moix on Sunday at 18.00. Not such good news for my boys. My youngest Jude’s team got a 7-1 gubbing from Real Mallorca but he enjoyed the experience of playing where Mallorca train. I was very impressed with their youngsters who were a class above. Sunday was my birthday and as I said last week we had to be in Sa Pobla at 08.30 for my eldest sons game. An unlucky 3-1 reverse meant no points last weekend but a Birthday lunch at Can Pedro in Genova made up for that. Hopefully better luck for them this week as I watch via Facebook live! Why? Well I leave for the UK on Saturday for a bit of work, rest and play and I’ll report back next week.
