Has the World Gone Mad?

Has the World gone mad? Well in quite a lot of cases yes. In the news last week the Organisers of Darts the PDC banned its walk on girls and this week Formula 1 has banned the grid girls. All this comes on the back of the awful stories about Harvey Weinstein and the goings on at the Presidents Club party. I personally don’t think you can put the two together as the awful stories we heard with Weinstein and at the Presidents Club were without consent. But the girls that work on these sporting events are doing so because they want to do the job. Lots of tv, radio and newspaper columns have been talking about this all week. Model Kelly Brook, who used to work as an F1 flag girl, told ITV’s Loose Women: ‘It’s a well-paid job. It’s one of the best jobs I ever had.. ‘You dress glamorously and obviously it’s about being presentable but I never felt I was taken advantage of.’                                                                                                                                    Jade Slusarczyk, a Sky Sports walk-on girl who often poses with snooker players, was accused by a feminist listener of BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show that she needed ‘education’ to understand why the job is offensive. But Ms Slusarczyk, from Blackpool, Lancashire, replied to the yoga instructor called Tilly: ‘I got A’s in school and would have become a doctor, but mum was in a car crash so I had to look after her.’                                One newspaper donated their whole front page with the headline Formula Dumb.              I was interested to see that one of the supporters of the ban was a female boxer Stacey Copeland she was interviewed on 5Live this week. She also wants a ban on ring girls in boxing and bringing in kids as mascots. She has the support of the Women’s Sports Trust and also many Women that work in sport including Gabby Logan, Natalie Pinkham and the Williams F1 test drive Susie Wolff who said “grid girls didn’t offend her but it was a step in the right direction.”                                                                                                                   I asked our listeners to comment on the subject, all the comments listed are from Women as other columnists have been accused of only sharing the views of Men.                “Just insane, the world has gone nuts. If the girls want to do it and get paid well, what’s the problem!”                                                                                                                            “Ridiculous / it’s all getting out of hand.”                                                                                      “As usual, men have made a decision affecting women without asking those women if they would like it made. That’s another swathe of opportunities for women neatly axed without affecting male opportunities whatsoever. If women don’t want to be thought of as sexy, it is very easy for them to dress and act in a manner which makes that clear. If they do want to be thought of as sexy, whether for financial gain, fame or for the purposes of attracting potential partners, why should they not be free to do so? Maybe women should ask their male partners to threaten a boycott of the F1, including watching on TV, unless the girls are reinstated. This sort of thing makes me and Robbie so cross. It deprives men of a bit of fun but it deprives women of so much more.”          I’ve also never seen my co-host Ayesha so angry about a subject. She thoroughly disagrees with the ban and believes Women should be making their own choices. So what’s next? UFC (Octagon girls), Boxing (Ring girls), Tour de France (Podium girls), Football (Team cheerleaders), Moto GP (Grid girls), NBA(Cheerleaders) and American Football (cheerleaders).

Which brings me nicely onto this weekends American Superbowl in Minnesota between last years Champions the New England Patriots v Philadelphia Eagles. Now this is a game that is scheduled for 1 hour yet it takes at least 3 hours to complete. Not of course forgetting the half-time show which this year is Justin Timberlake and the singing of the National Anthem which this year will be sung by Pink. So what do the Americans do while the games on well 3 things, eat, drink and watch some of the most expensive commercials in the World. The National Chicken council estimates fans will eat 1.35 billion wings over the course of the weekend. Which I’m reliably informed is enough to put 625 wings on every seat in all 32 NFL stadiums. They will also spend;

  • Potato chips – $277 million
  • Tortilla chips – $225 million
  • Meat snacks – $99 million
  • Popcorn – $89 million
  • Deli salads – $80 million
  • Cheese snacks – $71 million
  • Deli sandwiches – $58 million
  • Salty snack dips – $42 million
  • Deli platters – $23 million
  • Vegetable trays – $13 million

It is also estimated $1.2 billion would be spent on beer, $594 million on wine and $503 million on spirits. Between the coin toss and end of play, last year’s Super Bowl brought in an estimated $419 million from advertising for US broadcaster Fox. The staggering sum is greater than the GDP of small countries like Kiribati and Anguilla. Advertisers are paying broadcaster NBC a price tag “north of $5 million” for 30 seconds of ad time in the NFL championship game this year. That doesn’t even count the cost of production for the commercials, which often feature high-profile celebrities, or the cost of marketing the ads outside of the game. So why spend so much? Well it’s watched by over 100 million people in the US alone. The only one that comes remotely close are the Academy Awards which last year got 33 million viewers. I’ll be in bed by the time it comes on here, the perils of being a breakfast show presenter!

A great win last Weekend for Real Mallorca away at Atlético Saguntino in a very wet and windy Valencia. They are at home tomorrow against Otinyent at 12 Midday looking to consolidate their 6 point lead at the top. It looks like they’ve made some good signings in the transfer window to boost the squad in the second half of the season. It would be good to see a similar 11,500 crowd that came to the derby game against Atlético Baleares.

After last weeks column talking about Ondine and the great work they do here in Mallorca, it was a pleasure to interview Brad Robertson on the radio this week. He is one of the most passionate guys I know about preserving the beauty of Mallorca. We talked about the Balearic Governments intention to ban all single-use consumer plastics by 2020 and he said that it needs a lot more study and careful consideration before any decisions are made as the outcome if not managed properly could actually make the situation worse. We will get together again soon and update you once Brad finds out more information. Don’t forget their next beach clean in Pollensa on the 18th of February, details can be found on the Ondine Facebook page.

And finally a couple of news stories that brought a smile to my face. One in a funny way and the other that shows human kindness is still out there.

A plane had to turn back just 20 minutes into its flight due to an issue with the toilets, despite carrying 84 plumbers. The majority of the professionals on board Saturday’s Norwegian Airlines flight from Oslo to Munich work for plumbing company Rorkjop. Chief Executive Frank Olsen told Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet that his employees “would have liked to fix the restrooms”, but were unable to do so. The fault had to be fixed from the outside, so there was little the plumbers could do to help.

A student burst into tears after she woke from napping on a train to find a kind- hearted passenger had left her £100 under a napkin on her lap. Ella Johannessen, 23, had been speaking to her mum earlier in the journey about how “stressed and upset” she was about her finances. She then went for a nap and burst into tears when she woke up she found the gift. Ella said receiving the extra money now meant she wouldn’t go over her overdraft limit. She shared the heartwarming story on Facebook in the hope of finding the person who left the money for her on a Virgin Trains East Coast service on Saturday. Her post has been shared more than 3,000 times, but she is still yet to find the kind passenger.

Enjoy your weekend.

Better in Winter?

A subject that’s taken up a lot of debate is the Governments new tourism slogan “Better in Winter” that was unveiled at the Fitur Travel Fair in Madrid. Now I think we all understand the message but the question is, is it the right way to say it? “Better in Winter” does that mean we’re not so great in Summer? Just by adding one word like “Even better in Winter” would give out the same message but in a more positive way.

I posted a picture of Magaluf beach last Monday on social Media. It was 21c warm and sunny but the beach was deserted. So I posed the question if the Government says it’s better in winter then somebody wants to tell the tourists! That led to over 150 likes, loads of comments and 100 shares which meant it was seen by over 25,000 people and that was just Facebook. Both Instagram and Twitter got good reactions too. Now I would imagine that the plan isn’t to revitalize beach holidays in January as it can be hit and miss. But there’s no doubt there are times that the temperatures are just as good as April and May sometimes. The focus I’m sure is on cyclists, walkers, City Breaks etc but I was here in 1990 when there was winter tourism and in some ares it was just as busy as in Summer. You only have to go across the water to Benidorm to see there is a market and it’s all winter long. Why should we only look to extend the season to 9 months? Why not 12 months? It seems that the airlines, hoteliers and their workers are only to pleased to have a break in the winter. It’s funny that some people actually love the down time as they say it gives the Island back to us the residents. But anyone in business would surely prefer to be busy for the full year and not just 6 months? There are signs that things are changing, Jet2 are a pioneer in adding more flights earlier and I hear that more hotels are opening earlier. That can only be good for the island and with Easter falling earlier this year maybe there’s a chance, we shall see.

Extending the season would mean a greater stress on the island and its infrastructure. Therefore we have to look at preserving the beauty of the island.  There’s a lot of talk about the banning of plastics around the World. Sky News launched “Ocean Rescue” a year ago this week to highlight the problem of waste in our oceans. The Balearic Islands are now moving to ban the sale of all single-use consumer plastics by 2020 in what could be the most far-reaching legislation in Europe against disposable products. In a radical response to plastic rubbish blighting its tourist beaches and beauty spots, the regional government has proposed prohibiting the sale of goods including everyday items like plastic cups, plates and cutlery, straws, disposable razors, lighters and coffee machine capsules.

Such items will have to become “easily recyclable” or convert to biodegradable alternatives, in what will pose a major challenge to manufacturers. Now while I might question the Governments new tourism slogan, I applaud their thinking on this. One of the reasons they say to bring the Tourist Tax is to help the environment and this is a definite step forward. I should also at this point applaud the work done by Brad Robertson and his Ondine team here on the island. I will be interviewing Brad on Tuesday on the radio and he will update on where all this is going. Ondine’s last beach clean was up in Soller on January 21st and produced some shocking results. Here’s what they put on Facebook.
“During our last beach clean we recovered 8215 plastic items measuring between 2,5-50cm from a beach area of ONLY 50m!

Based on calculations, the microplastic samples that we took indicate that there is an estimated 168.125 pieces of microplastics within that same 50m area! (Small pieces of broken down plastic measuring less than 5mm).

These items don’t weigh much but their negative impact on the environment is huge! Birds, fish, turtles, filter feeders and even plankton (!) commonly mistake these tiny, toxic carrying pieces of plastic for food. By ingesting them they may suffer tissue contamination, growth disturbance and starvation due to a feeling of fullness, yet a belly filled with plastics.

The only way to keep these tiny hazards from our sea and beaches is by reducing our plastic consumption, and with that our plastic pollution!”

I’ve done a couple of these clean ups and they are not only hugely helpful to the environment but a great education for kids too. My two boys when we did our last one thoroughly enjoyed the day and learnt a great deal. If you go to their Facebook page you can see a list of beach clean ups for the year. If you’ve said to yourself I must go and do one of these clean ups and never got round to it then you might need to add it to the list below.

30. Learn/practise an instrument

I have to admit to at least half of these and I’m sure I’m not alone!

Real Mallorca v Atlético Baleares certainly lived up to the pre-match hype. A 3-2 win for Mallorca ensured they remain 4 points clear at the top of the league. 11,354 supporters were at the ground on Sunday and according to the Rcd Mallorca twitter account that was the 3rd highest attendance in tier 3 football last week behind Italian team Lecce on 16,838 and Plymouth Argyle on 11,942. Out of the 22 teams in the Spanish second division Mallorca rank in 11th place in highest attendances. They are away against Atlético Saguntino this Sunday at 12 midday.

And finally this week I wanted to end on a couple of news stories I heard this week that made me smile. Firstly one serious but my smile came from the fact I would probably be the same. The governor of Hawaii couldn’t tell citizens that January’s missile alert was false because he forgot his Twitter login!

Twelve camels were disqualified from a beauty contest after judges got the hump(sorry!) over them using botox. The animals were given jabs to make their pouts look more alluring for the annual event in Saudi Arabia!

Enjoy your weekend.

The Confusing World of Airline baggage.

As we get into the New Year thoughts turn to holidays and flight only short breaks. This week Ryanair the budget airline has said its overhead cabin space is getting too crowded with carry-on bags, so only priority customers can take a large piece of hand luggage.
The airline claims too many passengers are trying to take wheely suitcases on-board, which is causing boarding and flight delays. Weren’t they the guys who encouraged us to do it in the first place?
Starting this week, only priority-boarding customers who pay an extra £5 to £6 for the privilege will be allowed two bags: one normal size (55cm x 40cm x 20cm) and one smaller bag (35cm x 20cm x 20cm).
Everyone else will just be allowed to carry a smaller bag, while wheelie-style suitcases will be placed in the hold at the boarding gate for free.
Customers who refuse to put their second bag in the hold because they are carrying breakable items for example will not be allowed to travel and will not be entitled to a refund.
I have looked at a few of the other airlines to see what their cabin baggage policy is;
EasyJet
EasyJet only allows one piece of hand luggage, with a maximum size of 56x45x25cm, including handles and wheels.
You can pay extra for an additional cabin bag, provided it’s no bigger than 45x36x20cm.
Tui
If you’re just booking a TUI Airways flight only, you can carry 1 piece of hand luggage of up to 5kg for free. The maximum dimensions of your hand luggage can be 55x40x20cm and you must be able to lift your hand luggage into the overhead storage compartments yourself. Things like laptops, handbags and items bought at the airport must fit within your 1 piece of hand luggage.
Thomas Cook
Thomas Cook hand luggage includes one bag as standard, with a maximum size of 55x40x20cm and a maximum weight of 6kg.
Jet2
Jet2 tickets include one piece of hand-luggage, with a maximum 10kg weight and a size limit of 56x45x25cm.
Provided it’s something you can carry on board, you’re also allowed to bring a small handbag or laptop bag.
British Airways
You can bring one or two bags with you into the cabin – so long as they don’t weigh more than 23kg each.
One should be no larger than 40x30x15cm and the other a maximum size of 56x45x25cm.
Bit of a minefield really. I can understand them all offering different weights but surely they could all have the same bag dimensions as most people don’t travel with the same airline all the time.
As I said above most of the particularly low-cost airlines have encouraged us to travel lighter and with less luggage to speed up the Travelling process. So now by driving down fare costs they are looking at other ways to add extra revenue. Someone told me the other day that it cost them more to pay for their luggage than themselves!
On my way back from our holidays we came through (London) Gatwick. Always makes me smile that, it’s 27 miles away from London, mind you slightly closer than (London) Luton at 35 miles and (London) Stansted which is 39 miles! Always confuses the tourists who get off the plane expecting to see Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. Now Easyjet have a large part of the North terminal where they have created self check-in desks. If you’ve not seen this before basically you check-in and tag your bags yourself. I asked myself some pretty serious security questions too as there wasn’t anybody else around to do it.
I imagine all this is a cost saving exercise but there seemed to be more so called check-in helpers who could have been checking in people. We were even offered by one person to check-in our hand luggage for free, which we declined.
A game that we play with our kids when we need to pass some time like at airports or on planes is a card game called Uno. A game of Uno can be made by having the sought-after Draw 4 card, which puts the power firmly in the holder’s hands.
But it turns out we’ve all been playing the colourful card game wrong and the news has left the internet reeling. According to the rules, you can’t simply save the Draw 4 for when you’re feeling spiteful, or to make your mate pick up cards.
Nope, you can ONLY use the card when you have no other options.
And that’s not all. If someone thinks you’ve played it illegally, they can force you to reveal your hand.
If the person who challenged you is right, the original Draw 4 player must pick up four cards him or herself.
The revelation was made by LaToya McCaskill Stallings, who says she resorted to reading the Uno rule book on a particularly boring day.
“So it’s taken me 35 years on this earth to realize that I’ve been playing Uno wrong since I was a kid,” she wrote on Facebook.
“2018 is going to be a year of enlightenment for me I can just feel it! #yourewelcome”.
A new survey has reported that more than two thirds of the UK population believe British society is becoming less civilised than it once was. Have a look at the list below and see how many you are guilty of not doing.
TOP MANNERS WE THINK ARE DYING OUT
1. Not using your phone when at the table
2. ‘Ladies first’
3. Never swearing
4. Saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ when requesting something
5. Keeping elbows off the table when eating a meal
6. Giving up your seat on public transport to someone who may need it more than you
7. Holding the door open for people who may be behind you
8. Waiting for your host to seat you at a meal
9. Shaking hands when you greet someone
10. Covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
11. Saying ‘sorry’, even for minor things
12. Chewing with your mouth closed
13. Waiting for everyone to be served their meal before you start eating
14. Saying excuse me to get someone’s attention
15. Taking your place in a queue without pushing in
16. Knocking on closed doors before you enter
17. Holding your knife and fork in what is deemed the ‘correct’ way
18. Queuing in single file when waiting in a line
19. Making eye contact when you greet someone
20. Placing the cutlery in the middle of your plate when you have finished eating
Huge game this weekend for Real Mallorca v their local rivals Atlético Baleares. After Mallorca’s first defeat last weekend there is all of a sudden a little pressure on the team and their Manager. Crazy to think but that comes after 5 draws in a row and a 14 point lead at the top that’s now down to 4. A big crowd expected on Sunday and I’m sure it will be feisty and my money’s on at least 1 red card!
And finally this week I wanted to end on two great Family feel good stories. My youngest Jude went to the dentist the early part of last year as his teeth weren’t growing straight. No Child likes to hear the dentist say you’ll have to get a brace fitted. But that’s what happened to him last March. Braces have come a long way since my younger days and even come in different colours but kids can still be self-concious about them. At the time they said it would probably take up to 18 months but he went back this week to have them out. One very happy and straight toothed smile boy! My eldest Jacob plays football for a team in Palma called San Francisco, they have moved up to 11 a side from 8 a side this season and they have found it a struggle. Heavy defeats at the beginning of the season meant they were short on confidence, however it looks like they’ve now turned a corner and are unbeaten in 3 games and last weekend drew with the team in 4th place. They have also been invited to take part in a tournament called The MeCup held in Menorca over Easter. This prestigious tournament hosts teams from all over the World including Manchester City, Barcelona, Villarreal, Espanol and Schalke 04 to name a few. This week on the MeCup facebook page they posted a picture of the Brazilian U-16 team from 2008 who took part in the tournament. On closer inspection playing in that team were Neymar and Coutinho who currently are worth just under 400 million euros! I’ll keep my eye out for the stars of the future.
Enjoy your weekend.

Nothing beats coming home #Mallorca

At last a weekend without a celebration. The last 3 Weekends have taken in Christmas, New Year and Reyes so it’s time to get back to a little normality.
Just in case you need reminding;
32 sleeps to Valentines Day.
71 sleeps until British Summertime and the clocks go forward.
76 sleeps to Easter.
126 sleeps to the Royal Wedding.
152 sleeps to the World Cup starts.
We’ve returned from our holidays and whilst I love a holiday getting back home is always a bonus. Last week I told you I decided to release this column as a blog and I’m delighted by the first weeks reaction. SomethingforyourMallorcaweekend.com is the name of the website and it’s been viewed over 200 times by people in Spain, UK, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Andorra, USA and Australia. The idea for the blog came from the fact that a lot of people knew I wrote a column and wanted to see it more often. I always want to bring a lighthearted sometimes serious view of the island, my life and anything else going on in the World. But with more focus on Mallorca and all it’s offerings. Being on holiday one of the first questions you get asked is where you are from? Most people assume the answer will be England but are intrigued when you say Mallorca. I’ve lost count of the people that say how lucky you are(which is true) and why come to Mauritius when you’re always in the sunshine? I try to explain that during the summer I’m too busy to enjoy the sunshine and beaches although I do try every Sunday on my day off. The winter the temperatures do drop so we need to go further afield to enjoy the same. Mallorca winter time does open its doors to other activities such as cycling. Three different guys I chatted with say Mallorca is one of their go to places when cycling and with Team Sky holding their winter training camp here every year then there is no better.
Keeping it Mallorca, I told you on holiday I was reading the new Richard Branson book “Finding My Virginity”. I remember years ago there was talk that when he sold La Residencia Hotel in Deia he was abandoning Mallorca. Well in the book he said it was in fact a necessity to save the whole Virgin business due to the global market slowdown. He mentions in his book how much he loves Mallorca and he has since bought back Son Bunyola, a spectacular mountain estate in Banyalbufar, 13 years after a planning row pushed him to sell up. When his initial proposals were blocked, in 2003, he spoke of his sorrow at leaving the island.
“It was a very sad decision,” he told a local newspaper at the time. “I had great plans for Son Bunyola and I was ready to invest a sizeable sum of money in the project.
“However, the area’s mayor lacked the necessary foresight and the project was shelved. It was a great shame.”
Sir Richard rebought the estate through an arm of his Virgin empire called Virgin Limited Edition, which is used to buy property around the world. He writes on the website “Welcome to Son Bunyola, my favourite Mallorcan retreat! From here you can appreciate the stunning beauty of the Mediterranean from the tranquillity of your own private villa. I hope you enjoy your stay as much as I always do.”
Blue Peter has been named the greatest children’s programme of all time, according to industry bible the Radio Times.
The long-running kids show, which started in 1958, topped the list compiled by a panel of TV experts including Noel Edmonds, David Walliams and the Chuckle Brothers.
Blue Peter, which notched eight million viewers an episode at its peak and received 1,000 letters a day from viewers, it beat the likes of Grange Hill, Newsround and Tiswas to top the list.

1. Blue Peter, 1958-present, BBC
2. Grange Hill, 1978-2008, BBC
3. Newsround, 1972-present, BBC
4. Tiswas, 1974-1982, ITV
5. Multi-Coloured Swap Shop, 1976-1982, BBC
6. Vision On, 1964-1976, BBC
7. Live & Kicking, 1993-2001, BBC
8. Going Live! 1987-1993, BBC
9. Play School, 1964-1988, BBC
10. Crackerjack, 1955-1984, BBC
11. Play Away, 1971-1984, BBC
12. Pingu, 1986-2006, BBC
13. Rentaghost, 1976-1984, BBC
14. SM:TV, 1998-2003, back this year, ITV
15. Animal Magic, 1962-1983, BBC
16. Byker Grove, 1989-2006, BBC
17. Jackanory, 1965-1996, BBC
18. The Box Of Delights, 1984, BBC
19. How, 1966-1981, ITV
20. The Borrowers, 1992, BBC

Lots of memories in that list. My favourite growing up would probably have to be The Multi-Coloured Swap Shop with Noel Edmonds every Saturday morning. It was sad to hear of the passing of Keith Chegwin over the holiday period. “Where are you Keith?” Were the lines Noel used to shout every Saturday. He’d be somewhere in the U.K. and kids from that area would go down and swap their unwanted toys for different ones. A bit like a modern day EBay!

Keeping it Old Skool, remember Captain Birdseye? Yes the bloke who when he wasn’t
busy over Christmas being Santa Claus who used to say “Only the best for the Captain’s table”. Captain Birdseye was an iconic character, first hitting our TV screens advertising frozen seafood products back in 1967.
Fast forward 51 years and there’s a new captain in town, Riccardo Acerbi, 56, has been picked to be the new Captain BirdsEye. The once aging, seafaring hero will return a rugged, Italian-born silver fox. I suppose now that fresh fish is more readily available the frozen kind isn’t so popular. So they’re obviously trying to catch the eye of the ladies when out food shopping.
Real Mallorca have suddenly become the draw specialists after a disappointing 0-0 against Peralada Girona. In fact it would have been their first loss if one of the Peralada players hadn’t missed an open goal in the last few minutes. A 14 point lead at the top earlier in the season is now just 5 from second placed Villarreal B. I said last week they need someone to put the ball into the net on a regular basis. This weekend they’re away in Ibiza playing Peña Deportivo and next week the much anticipated local derby against Atlético Baleares. More on that next week.
And finally today a football/holiday story that made me smile. My boys were playing water polo in the pool in Mauritius with another English boy they’d made friends with when all of a sudden 3 French boys picked up the goal and said they were off to play football with it! An argument ensued with the French boys saying they can have it back if they play them at football and the winner keeps the goal. January 6th

A very happy new year and Feliz día de los Reyes Magos to you all!
A couple of conundrums to start my first scribes of 2018. At what point do you stop saying happy new year to people? Is it when you see them next? As there maybe people I might not see until next Christmas! As an Englishman living in Spain should we be celebrating Reyes too? I’m all for involving myself with the locals although I still can’t vote but more presents? After Christmas and one of my boys birthdays on the 30th of December the idea of more gifts is too much to bear. Mind you the idea of another day off never puts off most people, shame it falls on a Weekend!
I can also get out of Reyes as we’re away on holiday, I’m writing this as I lay by the pool on the beautiful island of Mauritius. Well that’s what I’d like you to think but actually it’s raining today! I’ve become one of those Mallorca holiday makers saying it’s not what they promised in the brochure, asking the receptionist what to do on a rainy day and what will the weather be like tomorrow? To be truthful I’m glad of the break whatever the weather to recharge the batteries and look forward to a new year. It’s a totally new experience for us as we’ve never travelled to this side of the World before and it’s been great fun so far.
On holiday is the only time of year that I read books, I keep saying to myself I must do it more often but never do! I only like reading autobiographies and I’m currently reading Richard Branson’s “Finding My Virginity”. Following on from his previous book “Losing My Virginity” it details how the Virgin founder reinvented himself and his brand for the 21st century. It’s a really good read and if like me you only read 1 book a year then this is a recommendation. It also made me think that since I’ve been off I’ve visited the cinema twice which is another thing I don’t do often enough. I saw Star Wars The Last Jedi and loved it. Don’t listen to the doom & gloom merchants who say it’s not in the tradition of Star Wars movies go and decide for yourself. We also saw Jumanji, Welcome to the Jungle, another one I’d recommend and as good as the previous one starring the late great Robin Williams.
Barack Obama has continued his annual tradition of naming his favourite songs of 2017, “During my presidency, I started a tradition of sharing my playlists,” Obama wrote on his Facebook page Sunday. “It was a nice way to reflect on the music that resonated with me and lift up artists from around the world. With some extra time on my hands this year to catch up, I wanted to share the music that I enjoyed most.”

Certainly a diverse taste in music from the former President of the United States. Might be interesting to hear what Donald Trumps might be! During our Christmas Day show Ayesha and I picked our favourite 2017 songs. Ayesha picked Shawn Mendes “Nothing Holding Me Back” not quite sure if it was the song she liked most or Shawn himself but a good pick nonetheless. I picked Ed Sheeran’s “Castle on the Hill” as the lyrics remind me of my younger years. I’ve been lucky enough to get 2 tickets to see him at Wembley in June. After being disappointed not to be able to see him in either Barcelona or Madrid. I saw him really early in his career at Mallorca Rocks in 2012 and you can’t deny he’s a great singer and songwriter.
It was the surprise hit of the summer, filmed in Mallorca and winning celebrity fans including Liam Gallagher and Stormzy and turning the lucky couples who found romance into instant stars.
A new wave of singletons are battling to find romance on Love Island as 60,000 people have applied for the new series in just 12 hours.
Scores of romantics have signed up to the ITV2 show in a bid to become the next Chris Hughes and Olivia Attwood, Jamie Jewitt and Camilla Thurlow or villa king and queen Kem Cetinay and Amber Davies (who have since split up)
And the hopefuls, who must be over 18, have had to get grafting from the get-go to ensure their place on the show, by submitting a home-made video explaining why they would make the ideal villa mate.
The show’s success last year was unprecedented. Bosses are already working hard to ensure the next series lives up to expectations. They will do their best to sign up ideal islanders from the tens of thousands of wannabes apparently. I’m not a fan but the last series attracted a peak of 2.9 million viewers, with 1.7 million watching on average across the seven weeks. So although the show being a mega hit for ITV2, the budget hasn’t been upped to send the likes of Chris and Kem to the Caribbean. Instead, it looks like the show could well be returning to us, where the past three series have been filmed.
Also, despite Love Island sometimes outperforming ITV in the 9pm slot, the show will be remaining on ITV2 and won’t be switching to the main channel when it comes back in 2018. Like it or loathe it you can’t deny it brings a lot of publicity to the island and the crew spent lots of money in San Llorenc des Cardassar last year.
Real Mallorca return to action tomorrow after the winter break. They have a home game against Peralada Girona kick-off at 12 noon at the Iberostar. You can buy half season tickets from the club now and this weekend tickets for kids 5-14 years are just 2€! You can book online at http://www.rcdmallorca.es or go to the club ticket office. After an unbeaten first half of the season albeit drawing their last 4 games it’s important they get back to winning ways and to keep the run going. A couple of injuries to key players mean they are now looking to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window with someone who can put the ball in the onion bag a little more frequently a priority.
Enjoy your Weekend.
