School’s Out For Summer!

A2003675-C923-417F-A548-98C7C83C2B5DSchools out for Summer and parents here on the island are now tearing their hair out of what to do with their kids for the next 3 months! Those of us whose work takes in the summer now struggle to keep them entertained. I’ve banged on for ages that it’s far too long a holiday but unfortunately I can’t see it changing. So we need to get on with it and our two will be doing tennis, boxing, swimming and football. Basically anything to wear them out!

Love Island bosses are reportedly launching a winter Love Island after this year’s soaring viewing figures.

This show’s producers are said to be looking to cash in on the gap in the schedule this year left by Celebrity Big Brother and they think this could be the perfect way to fill it.

ITV big-wigs are keen to avoid another flop like Survival of the Fittest and have therefore decided to stick to the same format as Love Island to ensure the show is a success.

It is claimed that the show will be filmed not here unfortunately but in South Africa over Christmas.

After the flop of Survival of the Fittest producers want to keep the format simple and mop up the gaping hole Celebrity Big Brother left reality TV hungry audiences.

Winter Love Island makes sense as fans adore the drama and love triangles and everyone wants to enjoy a bit of sun on screens in the cold winter months.

It’s still in the very early stages and casting isn’t even close, but producers at ITV Studios and crew are definitely gearing up for it.

If you’re a fan and you’re here in Mallorca on Thursday then you might want to get yourselves to Gringos at the Pirates theatre. Joe Garrett who was voted out of Love Island this week will making a personal appearance.

What about a Love Island for the over 50’s? Or should we just call it Benidorm?

After the euphoria of getting past Albacete last Sunday on aggregate by 2-1, it was a disappointing result for Real Mallorca on Thursday as they lost their play-off final 1st leg by 2-0. Having been reduced to 10 men on 35 minutes it could have been a lot worse and not helped by a Ref who wasn’t that great either like most in this league to be honest. So on to Sunday where it’s an amazing sellout of 21,000 and 100’s more could have been sold I am told. A great atmosphere is a must for the team to get themselves back in the game. Interestingly if Mallorca are winning after extra time by 2-0 then it doesn’t go to penalties. They will be promoted as they finished in 5th place and Deportivo finished 6th. Much better way of doing it in my opinion. The winners are guaranteed a pot of at least 40 million euros and if Mallorca triumph it means the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona etc will be coming to the island which boosts our economy. It will help airlines, hotels, bars, restaurants and not to mention the island being shown to a worldwide tv audience.

Good luck to Atlético Baleares who also got themselves through last Sunday against Melilla by 1-0 and now face Mirandes in a two legged play-off to go up to La Liga 123 where Mallorca currently are. They’re away this Sunday and at home next Sunday.

Another sellout of tickets happened this week at the WTA Mallorca Open over in Santa Ponsa. Now in its fourth year it’s now attracting both great players and the crowds too. On Thursday World Number 6 Angelique Kerber played the former World Number 1 Maria Sharapova. On my home to Santa Ponsa that afternoon the queue of cars came out to the roundabout from where the venue is  and people were walking to the venue. Kerber won in two sets. It carries on until Sunday and if you can’t get there it’s on BT Sport. Two sellouts in the same week shows the island is a hotbed for sport and long may it continue as it once again shows us in a positive light.

The “dad bod” is apparently more preferable to women than washboard abs .

The term “dad bod” is a relatively recent one, dating back to 2015.

According to the Collins English Dictionary, its an untoned and slightly plump male physique, especially one considered attractive.

Survey results published by Planet Fitness show 78% of people think confidence is king.

The summary said: “Nearly four in five among both women and men believe a ‘dad bod’ is a sign of a man who is confident in his own skin.”

Their findings also showed how 65% of people say the dad bod is attractive, and 61% said men with dad bods are sexy, which is up 10% from last year.

Not just that, but the men who have a dadbod were also found to be a happy lot.

“More men with a dad bod – this year in comparison to last – say they are happier with their body – 79% vs. 64%,” the survey reported.

“Having that body type has improved their life in some way – 72% vs. 62%

“Dad bod has made them more relaxed – 46% vs. 37%

“Men who say their ‘dad bod’ has improved their life this year claim their body type has helped them accept themselves – 48%.

“Or made them less concerned with their appearance – 47%”

I knew it but I’m still doing some gym stuff nevertheless.

Good luck with keeping your kids entertained.

Enjoy your weekend!

Stepping On with Bez

F1EF5126-3DEF-4CB8-937B-553C4F72B4E7I talked last week about anything that promotes the island in a positive way is a good thing. We’ve been blessed to have one of the greatest tennis players of all time who was born in Manacor on the east of the Island. Rafael Nadal Parera first won the French Open title in 2005 as a young 19 year old. I bet you would have got long odds on him winning it for the 12th time last Sunday as a 33 year old. It’s an amazing achievement and he still lives here on the island and fame hasn’t turned him in any way. Anywhere you meet him he’s happy to pose for photos and sign autographs. I was lucky enough to watch him train on grass last year over in Santa Ponsa and when you watch on TV it doesn’t show how hard these guys hit the ball. Physically tennis is a very hard sport and Rafa has had his fair share of injuries but he still manages to come back. His Academy is doing very well in Manacor and it’s worth a visit if you haven’t been yet. He will get married this year on the island to his childhood sweetheart Mery Perello. A few years ago the Government at the time paid him to do promotion for the island but in my opinion got it all wrong as they put him in normal clothes in some non recognisable areas on the island. Maybe it’s time to revisit?

Last week at Gringos we had Bez from the Happy Monday’s as a special guest. My first year on the island in 1990 “Step on” was a huge anthem and was played everywhere. It was a pleasure to meet and look after him. He was worried that the younger people wouldn’t recognise him but he needn’t have worried as he was inundated with people asking for selfies. For those not in the know Bez, real name Mark Berry has been a permanent fixture in the veteran band as a dancer and percussionist for many years, but he also has previous in reality television: most notably his victory on Celebrity Big Brother in 2005. He apparently is being sought by bosses at Strictly Come Dancing to appear in their 2019 series, which is expected to begin in September.

He made a controversial 2018 appearance on another BBC show Bargain Hunt, where the 54-year-old broke the rules of the contest.

The ending of Bargain Hunt had to be re-shot but everyone took it in good humour. And Bez paid back his ill-gotten £8 winnings, so he is still in good favour. The Bargain Hunt cheating scandal was talked about everywhere, even Gogglebox. If anything, it made the show. Everyone knows Bez would be a ratings hit on Strictly.

Back in 2016, Bez claimed that he could “go all the way” and win Strictly if he were asked to participate: “Dancing has made me famous and entertaining people is what I do best. I’ve lost count of the number of blokes who’ve come up over the years and said, ‘Thanks for making it OK for indie guys to get on the dance floor’.”

The funniest thing about the 2 days was getting an email from his agent which said he’d forgotten his Maracas!

The Premier League fixtures were out this week and the new season starts on Friday August 9th. Anyone else having lack of football Withdrawal symptoms? Worth noting this year that VAR will be taking its bow in this year’s games and after England’s eventful matches last week against Holland and Switzerland in the Nations League the controversial decisions certainly won’t be disappearing. The big talking point was the “offside” Jesse Lingarde goal which was a toe nail width of being offside. Surely now this is the end of multi coloured boots in the premiership? I’m expecting Nike or Adidas to come up with the pitch green coloured boot so they can’t be seen. Or what about the “Stealth Boot?” To make them invisible to the technology. It will be interesting to see how VAR pans out.

The PPL(Phonographic Performance Limited) the music royalty body has revealed the most played songs of 2018 on Tv, radio and in pubs and clubs.

  1. Portugal The Man – Feel it Still
  2. Rudimental & Jess Glynne – These Days
  3. Liam Payne & Rita Ora – For You
  4. Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa – One Kiss
  5. George Ezra – Shotgun
  6. Paloma Faith & Sígala – Lullaby
  7. Rita Ora – Anywhere
  8. David Guetta & Sia – Flames
  9. George Ezra – Paradise
  10. Pink – What About Us

Nine of the ten most-played artists last year were British (Pink was the exception), while 2018 marked the first time the majority of the acts were, or featured, women.

I was at the first leg of Real Mallorca’s play-off versus Albacete along with 16,311 others, this year’s record attendance. The crowd and the atmosphere generated definitely helped the team to a 2-0 win. Topped off with an absolute Worldy from Dani Rodriguez at the end. Now it’s squeaky bum time to see if they can hold on in the return leg on Sunday at 19.00. Albacete drew more games than they won at home in the regular season so let’s hope that continues. In the other game Deportivo beat Malaga by 4-2, with their return leg this Saturday at 21.00. The winners of both games will play each other next Thursday and Sunday.

Good luck also to Atlético Baleares in their return leg this Sunday versus UD Melilla. They drew 0-0 last weekend in the away leg and the kick-off in Son Malferit is at 18.00.

Let’s hope for some sunshine so you can enjoy your weekend!

We’re the Love Island

5AECEE02-C47C-48F0-AADD-EC4DA6888504In my eyes anything that promotes the island in a positive manor is a good thing. So last Monday Love Island started on ITV2. Like it or loathe it, it puts our island into a lot of people’s living rooms and that’s not a bad thing. No matter what the programme does the island still looks beautiful.
Love Island bosses were smiling on Tuesday after Mondays launch of the show’s fifth series was watched by a record average of 3.3 million viewers.
Last year’s first show attracted an audience of 2.9 million, continuing a steady increase in launch-night figures for the ITV2 series each year since 2015.
The 15 minutes of fame that the contestants gain can work in their favour meaning after the show they do a series of appearances in the UK and abroad. I’ve met a few of them at Pirates and interviewed the 2016 winners Cara Delahoyde and Nathan Massey on the radio. They have since had a baby together and are now engaged to be married. Cara came to Mallorca for her hen weekend and celebrated a night out at Pirates Reloaded a few weeks ago.
Probably where the contestants gain the most is through Instagram and being paid to make a sponsored post. The top 5 earners from the 2018 series are;
  1. Dani Dyer, Insta Followers: 3,600,000, Earnings per post: £15,480
  2. Jack Fincham, Insta Followers: 2,400,000, Earnings per post: £10,320
  3. Megan Barton Hanson, Insta Followers: 1,800,00 Earnings per post: £7,740
  4. Wes Nelson, Insta Followers: 1,600,000, Earnings per post: £6,800
  5. Laura Anderson, Insta Followers: 1,500,00, Earnings per post: £6,450
Even Kendall Rae Wright who was the first to be dumped last year after just 6 days gets £3,870 posting to her 900,000 Insta followers! Nice work if you can get it. But what happens when that fame and money dries up?
Well unfortunately there’s a darker side. There’s been criticism of the show due to the very sad suicides of former contestants Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon which has led to increased calls for mental health treatment for reality TV stars. With season five now in full swing, ITV says they have released new guidelines that address the mental health of the contestants. According to the ITV guidance, contestants will now have access to more psychological support, including “detailed conversations with potential Islanders regarding the impact of participation on the show, bespoke training for all Islanders on social media and financial management, and a proactive aftercare package which extends support to all Islanders following their participation.”
Whilst the actual game of football between Liverpool and Spurs was somewhat disappointing in the Champions League Final last weekend the behaviour of the fans was amazing. You might have seen a front page headline in the Spanish sports paper Marca about 5 days before the game which read which read “MIEDO” or fear, in reference to what they say were comments from bar owners in Madrid. I honestly think it was a slow news day as if I was a Madrid bar owner I’d be rubbing my hands at the thought of all those fans coming. Unfortunately we as a nation have a reputation and regardless of which club it is the foreign press think all our supporters are the same. I had a lot of friends there and they all said how good natured it was even with the mixture of the intense heat and alcohol. It’s a shame that the press didn’t report how good it was.
Ed Sheeran who played in Barcelona last night and will play in Madrid on Tuesday has revealed that he’s teaming up with Heinz to release his own brand of its famous tomato ketchup.
Deemed ‘Edchup’, Sheeran shared the news with his 29 million Instagram followers.
“It’s actually real and you’ll be able to get your hands on one very soon,” the pop star wrote, alongside a picture of himself kissing the special edition bottle of ketchup, which also features a smiling tomato with Sheeran’s face on.
The post has already garnered more than 1.2 million likes, including one by Friends actress Courtney Cox. “Love this!!!” she commented, alongside three crying laughter emojis.
The collaboration is part of a celebration of World Ketchup Day and Heinz’ 150th anniversary. Sheeran is a well-known fan of the ketchup brand and even has a tattoo of the company’s logo on his arm.
Heartbreak for Atletico Baleares last weekend as a 1-1 home draw with Racing Santander meant they lost their play-off on the away goals rule. I got the feeling that they thought the hard work was done after drawing 0-0 away but anyone in football will tell you that in a two legged tie 0-0 is in fact one of the worst scores. So it proved in which was another poor game to watch to be honest. The saving grace is that it’s not over yet, as the very strange play-off system here means they are now in the quarter-finals of the play-offs with the teams that finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th. They play away against UD Melilla who finished third in group 4 of Segunda B, They have been in the play-offs only once before in 1999. If Baleares can get through this there’s still another potential 4 games to reach La Liga 123.
Better news for Real Mallorca who after drawing 1-1 on Tuesday with Granada have reached the play-offs. A season best attendance of 13,839 meant a great atmosphere at the Son Moix. They join, Malaga, Albacete and one from Deportivo, Cadiz and Real Oviedo. Once all the final games of the season are over at the Weekend we will know who they will be playing and when. The play-offs in La Liga 123 are a little easier with 3rd playing 6th and 4th playing 5th and the winners playing a two legged final to get promotion to La Liga. The first legs will be played on Wednesday and Thursday next week and the second legs on Saturday and Sunday. Ticket prices and box office opening times can be found at www.rcdmallorca.es
Enjoy your weekend!

Crouchy

Champions League Final today and it’s an all English affair Liverpool v Tottenham. We had Peter Crouch come and visit us at Pirates this week. He was a lovely down to earth bloke who loved chatting about football, so my type of fella!  Currently at Burnley but coming to the end of contract I asked what his plans were. He said at 38 he’s coming to the end of his career but Burnley is an option for another year or he might come back to London, no clubs mentioned though. I asked who was his favourite manager to work under and he said without doubt Harry Redknapp who he played with at Southampton, Portsmouth and Tottenham. He was one of Harry’s go to players along with Jermain Defoe and Niko Kranjcar. Last year when it was announced Harry Redknapp was going into the jungle, Crouch tweeted “Can I just state on record pls. I am not a luxury item #imacelebrity”. As he’s played for both Tottenham and Liverpool I asked him who he thinks will win? “It’s a difficult one for me, I’ve got friends in both camps and I’ve got a wife who is from Liverpool and her dad is a massive Liverpool fan.”

“I’ve got loads of friends who are Tottenham fans too so what I’m going to do is sit on a massive fence!” He’s not wrong either, when I stood next to him he towered above me.

The Rolling Stones have given Richard Ashcroft the royalties and rights from ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ and have also had their writing credits removed.

The Verve’s 1997 single sampled a four-second segment of Andrew Loog Oldham’s orchestral recording from the Stones’ ‘The Last Time’.

Permission was gained for use of the recording, but permission for the use of the song was overlooked.

The only deal Ashcroft could reach that allowed him to keep ‘Urban Hymns’, the album the song featured on, on shelves was to sign away all of his rights and royalties to the track.

Ever since he’s never been able to watch an England game on ITV as that’s their programme introduction music and therefore brings back bad memories.

In a statement released after receiving the PRS For Music Outstanding Contribution To British Music award at the Ivor Novello Awards yesterday, Richard Ashcroft announced that he had now regained all rights and royalty shares from the song.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce as of last month Mick Jagger and Keith Richards agreed to give me their share of the song ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’,” Ashcroft said. “This remarkable and life-affirming turn of events was made possible by a kind and magnanimous gesture from Mick and Keith, who have also agreed that they are happy for the writing credit to exclude their names and all their royalties derived from the song they will now pass to me.”

He continued: “I would like to thank the main players in this, my management Steve Kutner and John Kennedy, the Stones manager Joyce Smyth and Jody Klein (for actually taking the call) lastly a huge unreserved heartfelt thanks and respect to Mick and Keith. Music is power.”

“Bitter Sweet Symphony” was closely associated with the mid-90s Britpop era, it picked up several awards and was nominated for many more, including a Grammy in the Best Rock Song category.

A battling 0-0 draw away in Santander for Atlético Baleares in the first leg of their play-off for promotion to La Liga 123. There was a great atmosphere from the vociferous 21,500 fans, 600 of which had travelled from Mallorca. This in itself is quite something as away support is normally non existent in Spain so well done to all involved. Baleares finished with 9 men which means they’ll be banned for the return leg this Sunday at 12 midday. The club announced that only members can buy tickets for the match at 15€pp as the ground holds only 2,000 people and they have to fit in away fans too. It’s disappointing for those who’d like to go to the game as I’m sure they’ll be a lot of interest but they are rewarding the fans that have followed them all year. The ground and pitch are very small and not something Santander are not used to which will hopefully work in their favour. It’s a shame their old stadium which is being rebuilt, isn’t ready. I remember going to see them play a play-off game there a few years ago against Mirandés and there was over 10,000 people. I hope they go up as I’ve said before it will be great for local football and the opportunities for younger players will be even better.

Not such good news for Real Mallorca who lost away to Deportivo La Coruña in literally the last second of the game. They were coasting to a 0-0 that would have been sufficient for them to reach the play-offs. Not sure what the Ref was looking at when he gave a penalty to Deportivo but it was converted, so Mallorca must look to get a result from their last game at home to promotion chasing Granada. It’s definitely squeaky bum time and we’ll all be looking at our phones to check on the other scores on Sunday evening. The club have had a big push on ticket sales and Sol Alta which has been closed all season has been opened for this game. It will be quite a double for the island if Balearics get promoted and Mallorca get into the play-offs. I said last weekend was massive for our island football but this one is even bigger!

Once again I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone that helped us on our Radiothon we couldn’t do it without you. The raffle was drawn on Friday and all the winning tickets can be found on our website and Facebook page. The final total was 25,363.11€ which is the highest total since we started in 2015. The overall total over the five years is 106,200.59€ which I am very proud of, once again thank you!

Enjoy your weekend!

Sam Shashoua

CBF0557A-F655-46D9-99F3-2B63CA39EAC6Forgive me if you’re not a football fan but I have to dedicate this weeks scribes to what is a really exciting time for the island and it’s two professional football teams. A young player breaking into the first team of a Premier League football club these days is pretty difficult and some might say for a young English player even harder. So over the last year we’ve started to see more English players move abroad to get first team football. High profile players such as Jadon Sancho moving from Manchester City to Borussia Dortmund and Reiss Nelson going on loan to Hoffenheim from Arsenal have encouraged more players to think about moving to another country to do what they enjoy doing and that’s play football. I learned at the beginning of the season about a young player from Tottenham who had moved here to Mallorca to play for Atlético Baleares. I got his number from former Spurs player David Howells but I’ve sat on it for quite a while to see how well his season panned out. Well we’re nearly at the end and to be honest it’s been pretty damn good. He Played 33 out of 38 games scoring 6 goals with 4 assists, although he mentions he’d have liked to have scored more! The team played 38 won 21 drew 12, lost 5 and won the Segunda B Group 3 championship and are now in the play-offs.
I finally met him last week at the Atlético Baleares stadium on the outskirts of Palma just after training. We sat in the stand and had a good chat about his career to date.
Sam Shashoua was born and raised in Chelsea and attended Harrow School. His Father also attended the school and he was keen for Sam to go to one of the most prestigious schools in England. He played for the school’s first team at football, was an Under-12s county champion at squash and represented the South of England Under-16s at hockey. So his sporting pedigree set him in good stead for the challenges ahead. He left the school straight after his GCSE’s to play for Tottenham full time. He’d been at their academy since the age of 8 and when it came to signing full time he had both Spurs and Arsenal vying for his signature. At this point I tell him I’m an Arsenal fan to which he laughs and shrugs it off. Signing for Tottenham he says was a great feeling he’d got the trial through his younger brother Armando who was already at the club but to sign for the club meant that he was at an equal level to his brother.
He was the Under-18s’ second-top scorer in 2016-17 with 13 goals in 23 appearances and his progress was rewarded with a spot on the first team bench for the first time in a 6-1 win at Leicester City in May, 2017. It was the second to last game of the season and just a week after his 18th birthday. Players that were with him in the team who were also making and have made progress since to the first team were Oliver Skipp, George Marsh and probably the best known Harry Winks.
He honestly admitted that he’d never heard of Atlético Baleares but was told told they were a third division club in Spain who were interested in signing him. He felt that in the U-23’s at Spurs his football might stagnate so was willing to play anywhere to get first team action. He liked what the owner Patrick Messow said about the club and wanted to try something out of his comfort zone, it was a risk, yes but it’s turned out pretty well. One advantage he had was that he spoke Spanish due to the fact his Mother is half Spanish and half Venezuelan and in Baleares no one spoke English.
On the playing side the majority of pitches are astroturf and the playing style is different. He doesn’t get the ball as much as he did at Spurs so he’s learnt to be more effective when he does have the ball and knowing that the chances will be fewer. It’s certainly not the tiki-taka that he expected and he’s had to change his style to take the chances that are given and to be more defense minded when they don’t have the ball.
After a 1-0 away in against second placed Hercules on Sunday which cemented them as the best team of Segunda B Group 3, they learned of their play-off opponents on Monday. I think they got the hardest draw against Racing Santander who won their league by winning 22 games, drawing 12 and losing just 4. Founded in 1913, they are one of the founder members of La Liga and have been in the doldrums since they got relegated in 2011/12. Their ground holds just over 22,000 so much bigger than Baleares are used to but with two plane loads of away fans travelling and a few hundred making their own way it should be a great atmosphere. Sam said he’d love to go there and get a couple of goals to come back to Palma with, giving them a great chance of promotion in the home leg on Sunday June 2nd.
Our thoughts then turned to next season, he has a year left on his contract at Tottenham so he thinks he’ll be going back for pre-season. But he hasn’t given it too much thought as the play-off is such a huge game. Trying to win and get the team he’s been playing for all season promoted is definitely his focus. But he said he would love to step up to La Liga 123 or return to Tottenham and get some first team action. He would love to be in Madrid watching the final of the Champions League but it clashes with the 2nd leg of the play-off so he’ll watch it on TV. He says it’s been an amazing year for English football and after the success at the World Cup it’s crazy to think that there are 4 English teams in the finals of the two European Club competitions. Naturally a Baleares and Tottenham win would be a perfect end to the season. I know Baleares rate him very highly and I hope he decides to stay. It might well encourage more UK players to give it a try.
A Ronaldo style free-kick from Salva Sevilla meant that Real Mallorca ran out 1-0 winners against a dogged Almería side last Sunday. Before the game he had been presented with the player of the month trophy for April and he then drove Mallorca to a hard fought victory. They now play on Monday nightagainst 7th placed Deportivo La Coruña where a win will ensure they are in the play-offs. Osasuna have been promoted and second placed Granada are one win away from second place. Hopefully they’ll do it this weekend at home to Cadiz as next week they come to Mallorca.
My eldest has finished his season and this weekend my youngest will finish his with an away game in Consell. He’s had a great first season at San Francisco in Palma and they can’t wait for pre-season training to begin. Dad Taxi gets a rest for a couple of months!

Thank You!

Since we started the radio station eight years ago it was always our intention that we were a community station that did a lot of charity work. We were looking at different ways of doing this and five years ago Jo from our radio office asked if we would consider doing a 24 hour non-stop radio broadcast. To be honest she thought we’d say she’s mad but I thought it was a great idea and the Radiothon was born. Little did I know that 5 years later through the generosity of all our listeners we would pass through 100,000€ raised. It’s an incredible achievement of which I am immensely proud.

Charities that have benefitted since we started are, GOSH, Son Espases Intensive Care Unit, Salvation Army, Shambala Foundation, Bloodwise, Calvia Lions, Help For Heroes, SOS Animal, Fundacion Nazareth, Club Vidalba, Asociacion Ondine and Feliz Animal Andratx.

Charities that will benefit from this year’s Radiothon are, Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital, London. A charity that along with Our friends at Pirates we have raised nearly 750,000€ and we have carried on supporting each year.

Son Espases Childrens Intensive Care Unit, Palma. Another that gets our support each year.

Our new charities this year are, Asdica, A dynamic socio-educational project aimed at adolescents and young people with intellectual disabilities and their families in the Municipality of Calvià.

Aspanob Created in 1987 by a group of parents who came together with the aim of improving the quality of life of all children with cancer and their families in the Balearic Islands.

Our target this year was to raise at least 19,162.52€ that was the number that would take us through the 100,000€ mark. Always a difficult task as it’s impossible to predict how well the fundraising will go. One thing I love and have learnt about this island is that charity is always high in people’s thoughts and the generosity here bears no boundaries.

So beginning last Friday at 08.00 I was hoping that we could achieve our dreams. I’m not sure if I can write about everything that happened in the 36 hours as I’m only given a page in the newspaper! What I wrote on Facebook the following day, sums it up perfectly. “Can’t thank you all enough. When we call you listen and to raise 22,848.33€ in 36 hours is unbelievable. We smashed our target & it means we go through 100,000€ after 5 Radiothons. Thank you! x” We went to a restaurant afterwards where all of sudden the lack of sleep finally caught up with me, see above!

We still have raffle tickets available if you’d like to buy some as the draw is not until Friday 31st of May on my Breakfast Show.

Congratulations to Atlético Baleares who’ve done what Real Mallorca did last and win their regional group 3. Winning the Championship unfortunately doesn’t win you automatic promotion in Segunda B. The final round of games come up this weekend with Baleares away to second placed Hercules. I’m sure their attention will be on which teams are going to join them. Group 1 you can perm 1 from 3 including Ponferradina, Athletico Madrid B or the favourites Fuenlabrada. Group 2 has been won by Racing Santander and Group 4 is also a 3 horse race between FC Cartagena,  UD Melilla and the favourites Recreativo Huelva. I interviewed Sam Shashoua who is on loan from Premier League club Spurs this week and I will bring that to you next week.

After the euphoria of last weeks last minute win for Real Mallorca you would think that an away game at relegation threatened Gimnastic would be a formality. But Mallorca who still have the second best home récord reverted back to type away from home and lost. I said a few weeks ago that it’s a different team that travels away to the one that plays at home. Of the 64 points won so far, 45 have come at home and just 19 away. That is probably going to be the difference between making promotion automatically or finishing in the play-offs. Mallorca are at home this Sunday at 12 midday.

Enjoy your weekend!

It’s a Funny Old Game!

You’re reading this and I’m into my second day of the 36 hour Radiothon. If you’ve donated so far, thank you. If you haven’t yet please help us get to our target of 100,000€ raised over the last 5 years. Thank you!

What a week of football, never let anybody tell you it’s just a game!

Great drama at Real Mallorca last Sunday. Drawing 1-1 after 2 goals that were both offside, it looked like Mallorca we’re heading for a disappointing draw. Fair play to the Manager who put on all 3 attacking players from the bench to try and get a winner. In the 94th minute a hopeful ball into the area was controlled by Alex De Groot who shot it perfectly across the keeper to slot a winner into the corner. Cue mad celebrations on the pitch and on the terraces. With no time to even kick-off those celebrations continued after the final whistle. “Si se Puede” (yes we can) sang the 11,302 spectators. Mallorca now lie in 4th place just 4 points off the second automatic promotion place with 5 games to go. It could all rest on Mallorca’s final home game and the penultimate game of the season against the team currently in second place Granada on June 2nd. They are away this weekend at Gimnastic who will be relegated if they lose.

A little bit of pressure on Atlético Baleares this weekend as they face 7th placed Lleida Esportiu. After a 0-0 draw in Badalona last week they still need a win to ensure they finish champions. Lleida need a win to get into the play-offs as they’re assured of 3 points in their last game as their opponents Ontinyent have folded. Failure to win means that Baleares will have to travel to second placed Hercules in the last game in a winner takes all tie. It’s great for the island that both our professional teams are doing so well in their respective leagues and long may it continue.

No games for my boys last weekend. Jake my eldest has finished his season and Jude my youngest had his game cancelled until Thursday which they managed to win 3-0.  We had our end of season meetings with the club this week and I’m delighted to say both boys have been asked back next season.

Following on from the weekend, the drama continued with Vincent Kompany’s worldy shot from 30 yards which screamed into the Leicester City net to put Manchester City back on top of Liverpool in the Premier League. The Scousers would have woken up pretty down on Tuesday morning with City now above them and the seemingly impossible task of scoring 4 goals against Barcelona. I for one had written them off. The combined atmosphere at Anfield, the brilliance of the Liverpool team and the totally inept display from Barcelona meant their dreams came true. Could it happen again the following night for the other team from North London against Ajax? Well as an Arsenal fan I certainly didn’t want them to win. But as the great Jimmy Greaves once said “Its a funny old game” and how they woke themselves from losing 2-0 at half-time to win 3-0 with the last kick of the game was truly remarkable. The final is being held in Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. I was lucky enough to go there last year for Arsenals semi final against Athletico Madrid. It will be an unbelievable atmosphere in a stadium I would count as one of the best I’ve ever been to.

I’ve not had much luck so far trying to get some early nights before the Radiothon and that continued into Thursday where I was hiding behind the sofa watching my team Arsenal eventually destroy Valencia 7-3 on aggregate but not without a few scares. Even at 6-3 and 75 minutes gone I still thought we could lose it. Swiftly turned over to see who we’d be playing in the final and that went to a dramatic penalty shootout with Chelsea finally coming out on top. Anyone know the way to Baku?

For the first time in European Club Football history all 4 finalists are from the same country and that country is England!

Football loving singer Elton John is currently on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road World Tour. The 72 year old is giving up touring to spend more time with his family but he has an ingenious way of keeping up with the football results including his beloved Watford. The superstar requested that his infamous million-pound Yamaha piano had a secret screen installed not in case he forgets his words but so he keeps up to date with the football scores.

Invisible to the audience, the device is often used to live stream football scores while the Candle In The Wind singer performs his two and a half hour show. I wonder what he’ll be like next weekend when the glory hornet boys take on Manchester City in the FA Cup Final?

Not the most conventional top 10 but traditional religious choices have dropped out of the top 10 at funeral services for the first time in a list compiled by Co-op from the 100,000 funerals it does each year. Old favourites such as The Lord’s My Shepherd and Jerusalem have given way to modern hits as more people would rather see others celebrate their lives.

Top 10 Funeral Tunes

1. My Way – Frank Sinatra

2. Time to say goodbye – Andrea Bocelli

3. Over the rainbow – Eva Cassidy

4. Wind beneath my wings – Bette Midler

5. Angels – Robbie Williams

6. Supermarket flowers – Ed Sheeran

7. Unforgettable – Nat King Cole

8. You raise me up – Westlife

9. We’ll meet again – Vera Lynn

10. Always look on the bright side of life – Monty Python

A final reminder about the Radiothon, please help us if you can.

Summer 2019

Today is the official start of the summer as most of the Uk Tour Operators start their summer flying programme. Despite what some are saying I’m looking forward to a busy summer. April was definitely busier than expected so let’s see what May brings. The Travel Editor at TravelSupermarket recently said: “Spain still holds a firm place in the hearts of Brits when it comes to holiday destinations. This is most likely because of the short journey time from the UK and the sheer choice of affordable flights and holiday packages available for families and couples. The combined allure of Spain’s beautiful sunny beaches and cosmopolitan cities crammed full of culture and character reaches tourists all around the globe, and Britain’s love affair with the country is showing no signs of coming to an end as it it is the UK’s most searched for holiday destination.”

I chatted to Steve Heapy the CEO at Jet2.com and Jet2 Holidays this week as we hosted their season kick-off event at Pirates. Steve is not your conventional CEO and for that I admire him greatly. He calls a spade a spade and is more than happy to have a beer with you to discuss the future rather than being sat in a boardroom. They have more than 125 flights a week into Mallorca this year and where others have taken capacity out of Spain and particularly Mallorca, they have remained loyal and added to it. Think Spain, think Jet2holidays,” he said.

With holidays in mind I was given this list of the top 10 things that Brits take from hotels, curtains really??

1. Towels

2. Full size toiletries

3. Lightbulbs

4. Pillows/Cushions

5. Dressing Gowns

6. Books (Bible/Other)

7. Plants

8. Crockery (Mugs and Glasses)

9. Batteries (from the remote)

10. Curtains

Today also is the opening night of Gringos. In its third year this is a totally unique night out from the makers of Pirates Reloaded. With dabbers at the ready, this is bingo but not as you know it! It is the ultimate night out for adults of all ages. Expect chaos, raves, dance-offs, funny prizes and big prizes!

Don’t confuse this as the traditional style of bingo – think nightclub and party atmosphere with music to suit all – from nostalgic tunes, old school anthems and present day bangers! There’s adult humour from the host and crazy characters to keep the audience entertained all night long. So what is all the fuss about?

The normal rules of bingo still apply, with some great prizes and then some bizarre prizes…but in between each game you’ll be up dancing as confetti fills the room. Even if you don’t win, you’ll get your fair share of laughs and a crazy party night at that. Book online for the best price guarantee at http://www.gringosbingo.com

This time next week I’ll be in the throes of our 36 hour Radiothon. The Radiothon started 4 years ago when we set up the Jacques Sasson Foundation. Jacques the legendary former owner of Pirates who used to love doing charitable things. In the past it’s been a 24hr non-stop Show with me and my fellow presenters helping me throughout the day. This year we thought we’d take it a little further so we’re starting at 08.00 Friday morning and finishing 20.00 Saturday evening. That’s 36 hours non-stop which should be challenging. Since we started we’ve raised just over 80,000€ so our aim is to pass through the 100,000€ mark. Charities that have benefitted since we started are, GOSH, Son Espases Intensive Care Unit, Salvation Army, Shambala Foundation, Bloodwise, Calvia Lions, Help For Heroes, SOS Animal, Fundacion Nazareth, Club Vidalba, Asociacion Ondine and Feliz Animal Andratx.

This year we are raising money for;

Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital, London. A charity that along with Our friends at Pirates we have raised nearly 750,000€ and we have carried on supporting each year.

Son Espases Childrens Intensive Care Unit in Palma.

Now we can’t do this without your help so they’ll be plenty of ways you can support us. I’m pleased to announce that all of our 36 hours are now sponsored, so you can come and join me in the studio and pay for a song to be played, challenge us to do something, buy raffle tickets, bid on an auction item, or just make a donation. Remember every euro will make a difference. Our studio is at the Wave House Hotel in Magaluf so if you can pop in at any time it will be great to see you.

A great win away for Real Mallorca last weekend in Malaga which was just their fourth win away this season. This weekend they’re at home to Sporting kicking off on Sunday at 16.00. They lie in fourth place and in the play-off places, just 6 points off 2nd place Granada who they play on June 2nd. Atlético Baleares can win their league this weekend if they beat Badalona. They are currently 7 points clear and they’re pretty much nailed on to reach the first round of play-offs like Mallorca did last year. It will be great for the island if they do get promoted and will be a massive lift to grass roots football too.

It’s the end of the season for Infantil B CD San Francisco where my eldest Jake plays. They are a great bunch of lads who grew as a team throughout the season. It’s a shame a few will be leaving but that’s football. It’s been a great crack with the parents too and I’m still known as the mad Englishman who shouts “Come On!” all the game. They rounded off their season beating Son Servera away by 1-0 last Wednesday. My youngest Jude lost 2-1 away in Ferriolense but they still have 4 games to go. No games for the boys this weekend so Dad Taxi has a weekend off. Or so I thought! Saturday we’re now going to watch Jude’s old team Calvià play and Sunday we’re going to watch Real Mallorca.

Enjoy your weekend!

Easter Football

Well what a washout Easter was! We were away, but the weather in Salou on the mainland where we were, was just as bad as it was here in Mallorca. What made it even more frustrating was the UK basking in temperatures of 25c, cue the newspapers with their “We’re hotter in Spain” headlines.

My Easter football feast started on the Thursday where my youngest Jude was playing in a tournament in Marratxi. His team managed to win all three games and get to the final. At the end of each game they had a penalty shootout just to make sure that at the end there were 2 finalists. Out of the 9 penalties he faced he managed to save 4 making sure they went through with maximum points.

The problem was that he wasn’t going to be able to play in the final the following day as we all had to go to Salou for my eldest sons tournament. We had asked earlier if Jude had a tournament and we were told no but the club decided that his team would play at the last minute. We were a little gutted for him but there was nothing we could do. Anyway he was also looking forward to joining his elder brothers team who’ve adopted him as their third coach and mascot and he proudly sits on the bench.

We flew to Barcelona that evening and drove to Salou. A few of things worth noting if you ever make the same journey. We booked our car online and as we have a years insurance cover for all cars we hire we booked the minimum insurance package. The guy at the counter tried to freak us out with all the jargon that we would have to pay out loads of money if there was a problem but to be honest this happens all the time and what we pay for the insurance is covered on our first car rental. Trying to get out of the car rental car park at Barcelona airport is a feat in itself as it’s not actually sign posted that well. Once on the road you need to be aware that there are tolls and they don’t tell you what you are paying beforehand so make sure you have change handy and if you don’t have any change make sure you go to a toll that gives change! We arrived in Salou and then tried to park. The authorities obviously know there’s a tournament in town as you have to pay to park in most areas and there’s a distinct lack of spaces. It took us 45 minutes to find a space that was then a 10 minute walk to the hotel.

Last week I told you what big business these football tournaments here in Mallorca are and that applies to any tournament you go to. The Mare Nostrum Cup in Salou started in 2000 and so this was it’s 19th year. 300 teams from around the World were about to compete in over 800 games of football in 3 days with over 5,500 players and supporters visiting the resort.

Our expectations were that if we qualified out of our group it would be a great result. We had no idea of the standard of teams we were going to face so we were entering a little blind. Our first game on Friday morning was a tight affair with both teams pretty evenly matched and a 0-0 scoreline was the right result.

We were also keen to find out how Jude’s team had got on in their final back in Mallorca. Unbelievably they managed to win 2-1 without him and won the trophy. They also gave the best goalkeeper award to Jude after his performances on Thursday. He was over the moon and so were we. The second game on Friday afternoon we were up against the supposed weakest team and we ran out deserved 3-1 winners. That meant our final game on Saturday morning would mean that the winner would qualify in first place. We would have to win as the team we were playing had scored more goals than us. Lots of nerves around amongst us parents but the boys seemed to take it in their stride. Like the first game both teams were evenly matched and it looked like we were going to draw and lose out of going through first. However in the very last minute we scored, cue ecstatic scenes on the pitch and in the stands.

To win 2 games and draw 1 was a fantastic achievement for the team and way beyond our expectations. That meant we had a game Saturday afternoon at another ground and another unknown opponent. When we got to the stadium we noticed we were up against a team size wise bigger than us. It was a tough game and they kicked us all over the park but the boys stood firm and dug in.

The game ended 0-0 so we were going to the dreaded penalties. I told Jake that if he was going to take one to make sure that he didn’t change his mind and hit it as hard as he could. I asked how many penalties for each team and was told 5. They scored first and we equalised 1-1, they scored their second and we equalised 2-2. Their third penalty was saved by our keeper Diego so then it was Jakes turn. As he was walking up one of the players shouted to me if he scores we’re through. What happened to the 5 penalties? It was actually 3 each and Jake could actually win it if he scored. At that point I couldn’t look, I knew he’d be devastated if he missed, so I went as far away as possible. I needn’t have worried he was as cool as a cucumber and slotted it home in the top corner 3-2! At that point I completely lost it and ran from where I was onto the pitch to celebrate with my Son and the team. Leaving an official trailing in my wake who was desperate to stop me, I made it to the celebrations. Without doubt one of the proudest and best moments I’ve had as a Dad. All was captured on film and can be seen on my Facebook page. The video has been viewed more than 2000 times and we’re still laughing and talking about it now. That meant we were through to the quarter-finals and we were going to have play another game that night. At this point the weather had deteriorated to wind and rain, so was not the best conditions for a football match. Whether or not it was the weather, tiredness or that they were playing a very good team we got gubbed 5-0, that team went onto lose in the final. The dream had ended,  but not without some great memories on the way. The boys had been brilliant and we couldn’t have wished for anything more. All I can say is if your son or daughter has a chance to go to one of these tournaments don’t hesitate to send them. Also if you have a chance to go too then go it’s great fun and good for your Spanish!

Whilst we were away Real Mallorca won 2-0 at home to move into 5th place, a play-off position and 6 points off automatic promotion. This weekend they are away to the team just below them Malaga. A point would be a good return considering Mallorca’s poor away form. Atlético Baleares won again to maintain their 7 point gap at the top of their league with 4 games to go. They are at home on Sunday against Valencia Mestalla. If they win and others around them lose they could be assured of 1st place and 2 bites of the promotion cherry.

Enjoy your weekend!

Happy Easter!

Easter is open us which normally means the start of the Summer season. We’ve been open in Pirates for 2 weeks now and we are pleasantly surprised at how busy we are. If this is the sign of things to come then hopefully it will be a

good summer. With Brexit now probably delayed until October 31st(Halloween, you couldn’t make it up!) this may relax more people to start booking holidays.

I’m currently away in Salou where my eldest Son Jake has a football tournament. Tournaments of these type are big business and I know there are quite a few on the island at the moment. The Santa Ponsa Cup for under 10s and under 12s features teams from Manchester City, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Sevilla, Real Betis, Villareal and local teams from the island. This is a very well organised tournament that we went to watch a couple of years ago as it featured my friend from Ibiza Martin and his sons team. The finals attracted over a thousand people. The East Mallorca Cup is the previous named MECUP which has been transferred over from Menorca. This was the tournament my eldest played in last year and because of the problems encountered last year with the lack of hotels it has been brought over here. Menorca’s loss is Mallorca’s gain as this is a big tournament with teams from the under 15s, under 13s and under 11s age groups. Teams featured are Barcelona, Espanyol, Manchester City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Inter Milan, Schalke, lots of local teams and other teams as far and wide as Australia, Russia, Ecuador, Brazil, Japan, Mexico and India. It’s great for the local hotels, bars and restaurants with the influx of so many teams and their supporters plus an amazing opportunity for the Island to showcase itself to all these people too. If you get a chance do go and watch a few games as these are the stars of the future from different parts of the World. Professional players who have played in the tournament previously are Trent Alexander Arnold, Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho, Neymar, Coutinho and Casemiro.

Getting back to Easter.  Eggs have been associated with the Christian festival of Easter, which celebrates the death and resurrection of Christ, since the early days of the church. However, Christian customs connected with Easter eggs are to some extent adaptations of ancient pagan practices related to spring rites. The egg has long been a symbol of ‘fertility’, ‘rebirth’ and ‘the beginning’. In Egyptian mythology, the phoenix burns its nest to be reborn later from the egg that is left; Hindu scriptures relate that the world developed from an egg.

With the rise of Christianity in Western Europe, the church adapted many pagan customs and the egg, as a symbol of new life, came to represent the Resurrection. Some Christians regarded the egg as a symbol for the stone being rolled from the sepulchre.

The UK chocolate Easter Egg market is worth in excess of £220 million with sales growing every year as the choice of chocolate eggs in the shops expands with tempting new Easter delights being added to the range.

Cadbury Creme Egg is the most popular and over 500 million Creme Eggs are made every year with about two thirds of that number being enjoyed in the UK.

Cadbury dominates the market with a more than 50% share and one in every three shell eggs sold is made in the Cadbury’s chocolate factory in Bournville, Birmingham.

Nothing for me beats a good old chocolate button Easter egg and hopefully I’ll be enjoying one(only one if my trainer is reading this) over the weekend.

This is a great story and certainly brightened up my day when I read it.

Britain’s dullest man has been voted for and was won by a man who collects beer cans. Nick West from North Somerset has over 9,000 unusual and rare tinnies and started collecting his prized possessions when he was just 16-years-old.

Others who were in the frame and apparently weren’t dull enough, which in most cases, in fact all cases isn’t true were.

Stan Hardwick from Yorkshire collects lawnmowers and now has a 500-strong collection.

Tim Barker from Cumbria has amassed a mini army of more than 12,000 toy soldiers.

Kevin Beresford from Worcestershire is busy going round the bend – as he travels the country photographing roundabouts. Kevin, who is president of the UK Roundabout Appreciation Society, uses his pics to make calendars and books.

Neil Brittlebank is an avid collector of bricks. He has over 1,000, dating back to 1892.

Archie Workman, from Cumbria, is a drain-spotter! ‘I find drain covers so interesting. There’s a lot of history behind them. It’s interesting to observe the geometry of drains and how they interconnect.” He said.

Retired doctor Simon Barley, from the Lake District, has an unusual handsaw hobby, and is a world authority on them, having collected 1,500 handsaws, completed a PhD and authored a book on the subject.

David Morgan from the Cotswolds must find the traffic cones calming as he has the world’s largest collection.

Maths teacher Andrew Dowd, from Manchester, has added up all the train stations in England, Scotland and Wales, and visited every last one of them! It took Andrew four years and 36,000 miles of driving to complete his visit of all 2,548 stations.

Please let me know if you know of anybody duller.

Last weekend from a sporting point of view was certainly a good one. Lots of great football as usual but the F1 and the Golf eclipsed that. Lewis Hamilton won the Chinese Grand Prix which made waking up early on Sunday morning slightly more bearable than having a lie in. But probably one if the greatest sporting comebacks happened on Sunday evening when Tiger Woods rolled back the years to win his first major championship since 2008. Great for us in Europe who didn’t have to stay up too late as they’d started a lot early because of worries about the weather.

Real Mallorca snatched a last minute equaliser at Numancia to gain a vital point in their promotion push. They currently lie in 5th place with 8 games to go and have a home game today, kick-off at 20.00 at the Son Moix. Atlético Baleares cemented their place at the top of Segunda B grupo 3 after beating 4th placed Cornelia by 2-0. Top of the league 7 points clear and 5 games to go with an away game this weekend against Levante. It’s looking good for them to finish first and have 2 cracks at the play-offs.

My eldest Jake played Friday night last week and a 1-1 draw against the team in 6th place was a pretty good result. But even better for my youngest Jude whose team won 4-0 and a clean sheet put a big smile on his and DadTaxis face.

Wishing you all a Happy Easter and enjoy your weekend!
